Can someone explain to me how this gun gets 1000 rounds per minute? Is it a lighter bolt that cycles faster? Is there some other mechanism going on? Not sure.

Also figured I'd make another QTDDTOT thread for newfags/nogunz like me. I'm trying to learn more; i know so much and that's making me realize how little I know as well.

the clip on that particular m16 is designed specifically for fast fire, the spring can actually keep up with the rate of fire thus providing 1000 rpm.

I would ask how the direct impingement M231 gets its 1200 + rpm?
>>
>>30386251
Delayed blowback amplifying lever.

The gun isn't gas operated, there's no gas port in the barrel, it's amplifying the blowback so it can achieve a faster breech opening-closing cycle.

The rest has everything to do with the magazine and how rounds are fed into the chamber. Protip : it's shit when you're using a 20 years old piece of aluminium crap.

For your information, the G2 is officially 950 RPM capable with M193 or M855 (1:9" twist rate, 30 rounds USGI/AR15 mags) while the F1 (1:12" twist rate, straight 25 rounds mags, only M193 compatible) is 1100 RPM capable.

Doesn't mean these guns are used this way. Actually you would fuck up entirely the barrel if you were to do so for more than 3 mags, thanks to no vents for cooling the barrel. This firing mode was initially only relevant for the 3 rounds burst mode, especially when shooting with the bipod, or to serve as a "fireball" enabler for combat groups without a mg. Cold war and Fulda breech, you get the idea.

Nowadays, not even burst firing is taught to the french recruits, it's semi or fuck you. Hence why all this mechanical bullshit is useless.

Also, it kicks like a mule for a 5.56, because amplified blowback, duh.

Here's a video from these italian guys who got their hands on a lot of cool stuff. One of the only if not the only vid of a Famas G2 firing, and even magdumping.

You are free to fap and got a clearance to cum.

It doesn't mean that other systems can't achieve high cyclic rates.

Good a QTDDTOT.

Literally not trying to bait, and I'm sorry ahead of time if this has been beaten to death. First time to /k/.

What quantifies an "assault rifle"?

My understanding is that any rifle that has a selector (auto, burst, single) is assault, whereas single is not.

Also, and I'm going to pick on the AR15 because lemming, the upper and lower receiver are the AR, and everything else is an accessory, is that correct?
>>
>>30387494
Select fire (semi, auto), detchable magazine, intermediate cartridge.

Not from the US, but IIRC it's just the lower. I could easily be wrong.
>>
>>30387548
You're correct on the lower. Everything else is just accessory.

wikipedia
In a strict definition, a firearm must have at least the following characteristics to be considered an assault rifle:[2][3][4]

It must be an individual weapon
It must be capable of selective fire
It must have an intermediate-power cartridge: more power than a pistol but less than a standard rifle or battle rifle
Its ammunition must be supplied from a detachable box magazine[5]
And it should have an effective range of at least 300 metres (330 yards)
Rifles that meet most of these criteria, but not all, are technically not assault rifles, despite frequently being called such.
>>>
It never saw infantry use and has no select fire. It literally isn't, but technically could be argued.

Be sure not to mix "assault rifle" with "machine gun."
>>
>>30387568
the Select Fire versions ruger made were assault rifles by definition.

I am thinking of getting a Savage Axis in .223 for my first fun. I am a poorfag college student, so if you have a gun to suggest I get instead I'd like it to eat .223 and/or 5.56 and be around tree fiddy.
Also,
>I'm a fucking southpaw
So any bolt action suggestions you have also need to be lefty friendly. Now that I'm done spurging, my questions:

a) does it feed steel case ok?

b) qc issues, or anything that would compromise the longevity of the gun?

c)would it be possible/legal for me to craft a full length stock for it at some point (mannlicher style) and drop in the rifle?

Thanks in advance
>>
>>30389315
from what i hear those are good guns, you could make your own stock, but you'd need considerable skill.

Is the Yugo M48 Mauser a meme gun? I'm getting into milsurp and I was thinking about getting either an M48 or a Yugo SKS. Also is 8mm ammo hard to find and what types of it should I avoid

First question. Does anyone else run two mags of jhp and one mag of fmj for cc?

Second. Why aren't there more pistols in 30-30? I know of two. It would be nice to pick a cartridge for both rifle and pistol for long distance trips on foot or horseback.

If firefights generally occur with opposing parties in cover, why do "tactical" carbine courses emphasize close quarters combat while moving quickly on your feet so much? What are the odds that you will even engage multiple targets at distances of 50 yards and below?

What is the greatest factor in how much an ar recoils, buffer/tube or gas system length?

I definitely want to build myself a new 20 incher, but I would prefer to use a collapsible assault telescope stock rather than an a2 if the recoil impulse is even smaller than negligible.

I want to make it as soft shooting as possible for libs I take shooting with me
>>
>>30389873
There are different kinds of shootouts. Fighting at close quarters requires the most individual reflex and skill.

The end of an assault is close quarters, both as an attacker and a defender. So it's relevant for the military.

When taking an HVT or suspect location, it's going to be at close quarters.

When fighting in cities, you will use a lot of close quarters related skills.

For civilians taking a course, if they ever get in a real life shooting, by far the most likely scenerio is going to be home defense, which will use some of those close quarters skills.

Long distance military firefights still use some of the skills such as making effective use of cover or magazine changes. The larger tactics and movements of a platoon sized firefight are beyond the scope and intent of a course for an individual.
>>
>>30389315
As a southpaw, bolt actions aren't bad. I just reach over the top with my left hand. It's a bit slower than a right handed person, but I'm not shooting a bolt action for speed.

Savage Arms has good QC.

You are perfectly free to craft your own drop in stock legally.
>>
I know that .22lr is recommended as a first rifle for the low recoil, but why not an AR? .223 is cheap, still doesn't have any significant recoil, and is actually useful for shooting things larger than paper and weasels.
>>
>>30393096
.22lr *used* to be insanely cheap and common. Before Sandy Hook it was unthinkable to go into a gun shop and not see stacks of it.

Some people just don't update their reccomendations. 5.56mm is a decent starter caliber for an adult.

The paint will flake almost immediately with use, especially for slings which get twisted and flexed more than other gear.

Smell goes away entirely very shortly.

If you want to paint cloth, the simpler the pattern, the better. Most military guys just do solid color, or solid color with a couple of odd colored stripes to break it up. Doing a complicated paint pattern on cloth is a fools' errand.

Sorry that's a french term for "mad minute" or "covering fire".

With 1.4 seconds to empty a 25 rounds magazine, its performances in full auto firing were deemed good enough to design a LMG after the Famas F1, with plans for a 7.62x51 caliber version as well as a 5.56...

Hopefully it wasn't adopted, but there were trials with high capacity mags, and one 7.62 prototype built.

It would have been something like a modern BAR... Totally useless compared to say, a RPK, or Minimi. Drum mags would have been out of question because of the bullpup design.

pic related some Famas F1 prototype high capacity mags.

From top to bottom and from left to right,

a magazine spring and follower device use to test magazine lenghts.
A Polymer 30 rounds bended mag designed after the AR15 mag.
A 30 rounds straight mag (2 25 rounds wielded)
A 25 rounds Famas F1 standard mag,
And a 20 round AR15 mag for comparison.

On the bottom, the experimental 40 (maybe 45) rounds designed for the hypothetical Famas F1 LMG version.

...No need to tell you why this could not have worked at all.
>>
Ah sweet one of these.

I've been mildly curious about the .50 Beowulf round and am looking into a similar upper for a long term project.

Has anyone had any experience firing one of these big bore AR cartridges? (.50 beo, .458 Socom etc) ? I've always been curious how the mechanism and the muzzle brake attenuates the recoil on these larger rounds.

Retarded question, but couldn't find it on the internet. I understand that the at 15 is the armalite rifle chambered in 223/5.56 as standard, but considering that the special snowflake calibers such as .300blk and 458 socom, don't have specific model names, like ar 27 or some shit.

Why does the ar 10? Just because it was designed later and the time period? Or is the design of the ar 10 that different from the ar 15

Is it legal to build your own guns?

Few things first

1. I already legally own guns

2. I could absolutely buy a normal shotgun, this is not an issue of cost, this is more of I am interested in the idea of building one myself

So I basically want to make a shotgun. Either a double barrel like the picture in 12, or a single barrel flaregun style 20 gauge shotgun pistol.

I'll probably get REAL shotgun barrels (just saw off the replacement ones you can get at any sporting goods stores) because I don't want to blow myself the fuck up, and do the woodwork myself and get all the other moving pieces and springs from home depot/lowes or online for more specialized stuff.

So basically; would this be legal to DO in the first place? I'm not trying to make anything which would be an AOW length wise.

And if it IS legal to do; would I be able to use it at any ranges? or would most disallow that by policy for liability reasons (understandable as homemade guns could blow up and injure the jackass who brought it, and the people around him)?

Anything that falls under the NFA registry would need to have a stamp before you made it.
Anything you intend to sell would require a serial number.
Other than that, if you're not a prohibited person, go fucking nuts. No serial number required if you live in a free state
>>
>>30400961
>NFA registry
I looked around their site a bit,

I found this;

What is ATF doing in regards to people making their own firearms?

https://www.atf.gov/firearms/qa/what-atf-doing-regards-people-making-their-own-firearms

An individual may generally make a firearm for personal use. However, individuals engaged in the business of manufacturing firearms for sale or distribution must be licensed by ATF. Additionally, there are certain restrictions on the making of firearms subject to the National Firearms Act.

Anyways, I have absolutely no plan on selling these, it's not going to be anywhere near quality of factory manufactured ones, and since I'd basically be re-purposing over the counter stuff, It's going to be extremely uneconomical, and it's not like I'm going to quit my day job to make them, I figure making one as a little project would take probably about a year from planning to first test-fire working on this in my spare time and waiting for parts.

I live in MA though, so since gun control is kind of tighter around here, I wonder if I would need to get a serial on it and register it or something; I don't really consider that much of a problem, I'm not planning on doing illegal shit with it or anything.
>>
>>30400776
>Is it legal to build your own guns?
who the hell would stop you? Seriously.

>>30401063
I figured it would probably be fine if I got some stamp or got it registered or something; my follow question was would most ranges allow you to USE your homemade gun on their premises or would that be a universal no?

Any clue as to why the French army didn't adopt the G2 as a while? It would seem like a sensible idea, what with adopting M855 globally. The Brits adopted M855 and changed their entire weapons system with the adoption of the SA80 in the mid-80's, and the Yanks adopted the M855 with the M16A2 around the same time.
Why didn't the French MoD choose to use the superior ammunition? Was it just an issue of cost?

Bit of an abstract question here, I'll try and keep it short and with context.

Im an avid mountain biker, when photographing bikes, it's considered good form to always take photos from the Drive Side (right side) of the bike so the drive train components can be seen easily and anyone looking at your steed can admire the parts you've put on it.

Is there a courtesy standard for which side of a firearm you take a photo of? Does criteria change if it has ambidextrous controls?
>>

Thanks guys!

Excuse my ignorance on that one. Ausfag (I know don't hate me) has guns (see not all bad); my ownership has been with bolt actions and revolvers (although no more handguns because the license was a nightmare time wise to maintain). Left handed bolt actions eject left, and my only dealings with Auto's was with the F88's during cadets in young life, and reserves later, which can configure ejection to suit lefties.
I had always assumed that an AR platform in a lefty configuration would eject left.

Thanks for contributing to my lack of delinquency guys, it's great coming here.

How do submarines deal with dead people onboard? I've read on another thread people suggesting that there's no freezer to store them, so "torpedo tubes" it is, but it seems absolutely crazy - if someone dies in a suspect way there MUST be a way to store at least some corpses in a morgue, if there's an infirmary there must be a morgue too, damnit. Ok, can someone help my dumbass out?

What is a decent, reliable weapon that can be broken down and has stopping power?
I want to have something that takes little room up, but is decent in terms of use.

I've done a fair amount of night shooting and unless you're shooting an SBR'd nugget with a muzzle brake on it no handgun muzzle flash is gonna fuck you up enough to not be able to use your night sights. So I've had a wasr10 for almost a year now and it's been a good shooter this whole time. I've put around 2500 rounds through it so far.

Anyways just recently it's started to kick like a fucking mule. When you shoot it the barrel must whip down super hard because it kicks the stock right up into your cheek and it feels like an electric shock going through your bone. You can't even make it through a magazine without saying fuck this. And no it's not my shooting stance or a loose grip on the rifle. I shoot hot handloaded 45-70's and can shoot a lot of them no problem. This is different.

I'm thinking it's either my recoil spring is fucked or maybe I cleaned the rifle real good and knocked out a burr in the gas port hole or something and now it's overgassed?

I don't know but I do know that the bolt carrier is slamming hard into the rear trunion and it didn't use to fuck up my cheek so bad till recently.

>>
>>30411855
Sounds like a recoil spring thing, its cheap to replace so id start with that.

There shouldnt be any burr to knock out to make it stupid overgassed because its just a port that goes into the barrel, if you have welding equipment you can weld the gas port and drill it out til it functions to your satisfaction, you could also just buy an extra gas tube and drill holes into it to bleed some extra gas if it truly is overgassed but that would be a strange thing to happen all of a sudden.

other than that make sure everything is on tight and check the rivets to see if theyre coming loose, rule of thumb is if you can stick a sheet of paper under a rivet then its not seated properly.

Yeah I think a wolff xp recoil spring is going to be my next purchase. I already bought a tapco slot muzzle brake that cut down the cheek slap by about half. Now that I think about it that was kind of silly to buy before I tried replacing the recoil spring lol.

You can charge this gun with your pinky though and removing the dust cover is super easy. I remember when I first got it you really had to push hard on the spring tab to take it off.

depending on what sort of first rifle you are looking for, decide how much you want to spend, what style you want(bolt action, ar-15/22, leveraction), and what caliber, 22, 5.56nato/.223 remington would be a good start.

then start looking around at major manufacturers.

Most likely in a non-combat situation, they return to a friendly port ASAP and arrange transportation for the corpse back to the home country.

In combat, were that to happen, they'd probably chuck the stiff into whatever they use to refrigerate/freeze stored provisions until such time as the body could be moved without jeopardizing the mission or ship.

Sticking a body in the torpedo tube sounds like an urban legend, or the .mil equivalent.

But nobody who has EVER put a vfg on a pistol has gotten in trouble for it even if they were being charged with a crime and it could have been tacked on it never has. They dont have the manpower to enforce it and they dont want to prosecute and set a precedent so do whatever you want.

Yes. Money. The Famas G2 was born in 1992, after the fall of the iron curtain. it was originally designed for the french navy which needed a waterproof gun to replace the F1. Around 20.000 G2 were produced.

The "peace benefits", aka defense budget cuts, didn't helped the french military to plead for his case. Same for lots of other promising equipments.

The french industry, which was only then really getting its shit together and slowly becoming a really neat technologically advanced military industrial complex, was also crippled by political and ideologic issues. When the GIAT was created by the left government, it was a slaughter : designed to make every defense company stronger together, it was badly managed, and failed to become what BAE became in the UK for example.

The Famas G2 was a mess to build production for. In 1993 GIAT failed to deliver even 10 rifles to the colombian military for trials for example. In fact, the very very very few G2 you may see in other militaries, are more like collector's pieces than something else.

On the technical issues, it's really a different rifle from the F1. Mechanically the same, it's simpler though, and way less prone to jamming. Its 1:9" twist rate barrel allows it theoretically to both stabilize M193 and M855, but not M856 (tracers). Which sucks, just like the AUG.

At the beggining of its production it would have been a 3000 euros rifle, in current standards. Then came the G2E (for export) without bipod or night sights and some other refinements, which would have been around 150 0 euros. Not a lot. Yet, the rifle failed to convince within the most small arms proficient regiments of the french army, which were already using Sigs, M4's, and the like, instead of their Famas F1.

So the G2 stood within the french navy. Not different enough from the F1 in the eyes of the politics to justify its widespread adoption.

Then between 1994 and 1997 the MAS was dismantled. Production tools sold. End of story.

I'm looking to buy a 1911 for no other reason tha wanting one. Is there any real difference between the offerings from Colt/Springfield Armory/RIA/Remington/etc? Is one noticeably superior?

The AR 10 was designed first.
>>
>>30399863
You can rebarrel an AR10 in any caliber based on the .308 Win. There are a fuckhueg number of calibers based on that case. 6.5 creedmore and 7mm-08 spring readily to mind. The magazine's will work for both of those calibers without modification.
>>
>>30404289
You know that the gas blocks are replaceable, right? At any rate, why would you ever dremel anything on an AR, ever? They are literally adult legos. Not to mention you would be destroying something of value (front sight gas blocks have a measurable secondary market value) even if it is only thirty bucks. And it will look incredibly stupid. Since mechanical skills don't seem to be your strong suit (judging by your question) just buy a different upper.

In my country(potato) assault rifle is a carbine(which translates into "fires intermediate cartridge") with ability of both auto and semi-auto fire.
>>
>>30412005
I think people consider them semi-auto rifles. Especially since they fire 7,62x51 as far as I remember.

I've been into guns for twenty years. I'm a bit of an autist. I'm going to know a thing or three that newfags wouldn't have a prayer of finding out without knowing exactly what to look for. Often, if you know what to ask about, it's because you already know the answer. Just hang out around anything guns for a decade or so, and remember what you see.

Also, watch forgotten weapons on joo tube. Read old gun mags (You can buy them at garage sales) and look up the writings of Elmer Keith, Jeff Cooper, and all of the other old timers.

DO NOT SHOOT THAT RIFLE UNTIL YOU HAVE REPLACED THE SPRING!!!
>>
alright so basically noguns here since all I've got is a Henry Repeater in .22, been wondering

what exactly is wrong with century's AKs? i've heard bad shit about them, but nothing specific, and all the gun mags i've read praise them, which seems kind of suspicious, so what's the catch?
>>
So, does GP-25/30 have a HEAT /HEDP grenade of sorts? I've only found common frag and bouncy frag, and some flares, but nothing against even light armour.
>>
>>30419874
In 2001 somebody finally designed a HEAT round for them, but as far as I know it isn't really used.

The GP launchers really aren't meant for armor penetration. For the Soviets, if they needed light anti-armor work, there was always an RPG attached nearby.
>>
Instead of making the ak, why didn't Russia just retrofit SKS's to use detachable mags and manufacture them with detachable mags like the Chinese did?
>>
>>30419062
They have had some bad runs in the past. Their initial WASR-10 AKs were assembled poorly with tiled gas blocks and a big problem with poorly cut magazine wells. Their Tantal AK-74s actually had a run where some-fucking-how they managed to put 5.56mm barrels on some of them instead of 5.45mm. Stuff like that has given them a bad reputation.

More recently, their newer AKs have been basically fine as entry tier weapons. I owned both a WASR and a AK-74 Tantal made by them and they were fine. Just make sure to do a double check when buying to make sure it's not a fucked up older import.
>>
>>30419951
Thanks, dude. I know pretty much shit about actual military stuff, just lurk around enough and play vidya enough to know my way around small arms, but when I played Arma 2 with some friends, we ran across some BTR's or whatnot, and got our asses kicked 'cause no HEAT grenades or anything like that. I wondered ever since if they are or aren't a thing, as it seems pretty fucking convinient to carry something that can deal with, y'know, light vehicles and dare I say, light fortification on you. How common are they on M203s anyway, if you know?
>>
>>30420078
HEDP, which has a HEAT component is the standard issue round.

The effectiveness of the HEAT effect is limited because of the extremely small diameter of the round and the fact that it is spin stabilized via rifling, which degrades it's ability to penetrate. The penetration is definately helpful in attacking cover and ensuring it causes more damage to light vehicles, but it's pretty "meh" when you compare it to the next lightest dedicated HEAT weapons. (75mm penetration for best version of HEDP 40mm vs 200mm penetration against steel for a LAW, for example).

The Soviets just kinda figured it was worth it to pack more explosives into their rounds, seeing that HEAT rounds require basically reducing the overall amount of explosives you can fit in there.

Navy frog here. We train with semi, burst and full auto.
But having guns that aren't completely worn out, unlike the army's F1, must have counted for something.
Or simply having to expand all the ammo before reaching the harbour after a mission.

I didn't notice that much of a difference in kick between the G2, and other 5,56 that I've used (Sig 550 and M4), but I've never used the three at the same time.
And doing tight groups in burst mode is fairly easy.

>>30418096
Actually it was closer to 5000€ at the very beginning.
It tells a lot, being able to reduce the production cost by 40% with audits only.

Nice to have some first hand infos. Is the fact you used both Sigs and M4s means you're a fusco ? In which case being trained to shoot burst and full auto would be logical.

Question, are all the G2s able to fire the APAV40 rifle grenade ?

It seems only some of them got the grooves around the end of the barrel which are supposedly mandatory to shoot the APAV40 (or were they mandatory with the now decommissionned AC58 only ?)

Also, have you been issued 1:7" twist rate Beretta-made barrels intended for the low profile and FELIN upgraded Famas F1 ?
Do you shoot M855 (same rounds as for the Minimi, so F3 and F4 ammo I guess) or M193 ?

Finally, what gun would you like to see in the french armed forces as the new standard assault rifle, between the HK416, SCAR L, ARX160, Sig MCX or VHS2 ?

You could part them out and do pretty well. I know there is a niche market for these, but the A1 upper is desirable, as is that little stock. BCGs are always sellable as well.

Underrated first gun is a .30-30 lever gun

Mild recoil, fun, aesthetic. Kills whitetail Durrell dead.

There are many sites out there that you can join that specialize in home built weapons. Personally, I belong to a couple, weaponsguild.com is a good place to start if you are looking for information. You can build all the weapons you want, as long as you do not intend to sell them. If you want to build to sell you will need to get an 07 FFL. But if you are just building for fun, like me, build to your hearts content. Just keep it SA.
