You can't go wrong with a Glock 17 or 19. I prefer the 17. Also get a 3.5 lbs trigger bar, comp springs, extended slide stop and extended mag release. All cheap easy to do yourself upgrades that make a great pistol even better.

ive only seen two people recommend the beretta 92fs so far, which is surprising. honestly op, that would be my choice. i have two, one american made and one italian made, and everything about them is smooth. the trigger is a tad rough, but everything else moves like its been covered in butter. pulling the slide back is crazy satisfying. plus, easy maintainance, widely avaliable parts, and relatively abundant ammo.

Steyr M or L series. Good capacity, better ergos than a Glock (depends by person but definitely for me), lower felt recoil by design, magazines are $15 each, and you can find one new for under $500 easily. I got mine for 430 ish after tax and fees. That would leave a couple hundred for some bulk ammo to practice and to attach a light for the HD duty. Mine has been perfectly reliable and has ran 3 different calibers (9mm and .357 sig are IGB barrels) through the .40 base frame and slide. Had one failure to fire from Aguila ammo that was dubbed a bad primer, and that with firing around 4500 rounds out of it in varying caliber (800 or so 9mm, 500ish .357, and the rest .40). Will buy the S model when tax time hits again to have a more concealable option for summer when the P238 doesn't seem sufficient for the outdoors.
