I'm looking to get a do-all center fire bolt action rifle but am having trouble deciding on a caliber.

I have a Savage Model 25 in .223 but want something with more firepower. Even with a good .223 load, it has a 1:12 twist rate which causes heavier bullets to key hole and shoot inaccurately.

I also have a Mosin Nagant but want something chambered in a modern cartridge with better accuracy.

A panic-proof and decently common caliber is preferred.

>TLDR - Want a powerful bolt action rifle that isnt a nugget. What caliber do you suggest and why?

.338 Lapua Magnum

Any decent .308 will handle most anything you're looking to do at common distances.
Savage, ruger, tikka are all liked rifles.
>>
.25-06 is pretty good 125 grain bullet that is .257 inch diameter moving at 3000 feet per second if using basic load and possibly faster using better and more propellent
>>
>>30371574
Im looking to shoot it on a semi-regular basis. Id prefer it not to be $5 a shot.
>>
>>30371578
If possible, I would just get another Savage with an Accutrigger.

How do you feel about .308 vs .30-06? 06 seems like it would be more panic proof than .308 but still provide similar ballistics.
>>
6.5CM or if $ and recoil is no object, >>30371574
>>
>>30371600
please please get .25-06 it is derived from a .30-6 Springfield case necked down to a lighter round think of this the parent case can reach nearly 3000 feet a sec with 150 grain round think what you could do with a 100 or 75 grain round
>>
>>30371560

.30-06, if you want a do everything caliber there is no better. Can load up heavy or light depending on what you are looking to kill and is damn accurate once you get into hand loading.
>>
>>30371650
why is every one trying to get op not to get my special snow flake round.. .25-06 strong.
>>
>>30371650
A few buddies of mine all pitched in on a reloading press. I mainly do pistol calibers an .223 but I think one of my buddies has a .30-06 die set at their place.
>>
.300 win mag is pretty rad.
>>
>>30371650
>is damn accurate once you get into hand loading.

This is true of every centerfire cartridge in existence. The only inherent difference lies in effective range. The rest is determined by market availability of quality components.
>>
>>30371665
This is the first time ive heard of it and I have not seen it in any local store.

What the biggest game that is recommended to be taken out with .25-06?
>>
>>30371665

.25-06 is an awesome caliber, no denying it. Though it, lacks the weight that its .308 caliber father can toss down range for making things deader.
>>
>>30371624
One of the reasons the military moved to the 7.62x51 was that it did as good as '06 for most of what was being expected of the rifles.
As for panic times, at the very least you could pick up a case of the stuff and be good for a while.
>>
>>30371702
just about anything its heavy enough to take down most animals, I would draw the line at anything as large as a moose although with proper shot placement that shouldn't be an issue
>>
>>30371709
can be solved by loading more powder and changing burn rate. The case has lots of room.
>>
>>30371560
Best caliber for what? Deer or elephants? For general purpose hunting, the 30-06 is hard to beat. If you want a flatter trajectory, go for the 270. If you want a really flat trajectory, the WSM family is good.
>>
>>30371740
What about common commercial loads? Im not looking for every round I put down range to have to be a reload.
>>
>>30371749
pretty much true. heck you can hunt anything with a .223 what matters is shot placement and distance.
>>
>>30371749
Anything big enough to take down most North American game as well as a long range man-stopper.
>>
>>30371758
common comerical load is 125 grain at 3250fps if http://www.sportsmansguide.com/productlist/ammo-shooting/rifle-ammo/25-06-remington-ammo?d=121&c=96&s=910

You asked for the best bolt action calibre and he gave it to you, next time say what is the best bolt action for poorfags.
>>
>>30371855
not op but when shooting for fun I prefer not to piss away money also .338 luppa isn't best round that goes to .600 nitro mag express round
>>
>>30371740

I'm not talking about the speed, I'm talking about the bullet weight. When you want to kill a moose, a 120grain bullet ain't gonna cut it.
>>
Not OP here, anything wrong with the .308 win? Any reason I'd want the .30-06 over the .308?
>>
>>30371943
is moose meat any good? any ways if you plan on hunting moose then it should still be good as bullet power after 2000 foot pounds doesn't make a difference a .25-06 should blast through a moose skull or heart no problem. I mean I could hit a moose with a 200 grain round an have it not drop because I hit it in the gut. shot placement is king. If you want something to instantly drop a moose no matter where you shoot it you are looking for 4000 plus foot pounds of energy
>>
>>30371560
6.5x54 mannlicher shoenauer.
>>
>>30371560
.308's kill all the deers
>>
I can't believe no one has mentioned 7mm-08!

If you are going to get retarded then get .308 necked down
>>
>>30371994

Moose is delicious, Its more of getting through the meat, a 120 grains is going to have a tough time getting through to the boiler room where as 220 is going to be wondering where to stop. That and you were loading up to 2900 FPS, Shit, I've got 150 grain .30-06 going 2900 FPS.
>>
>>30371970

Other than pure hunting not really, .308 can't be loaded up with as heavy or as fast, but has better inherent ballistics because the shorter case allows for more even burn and less pressure spikes.

But at that point you are splitting hairs and most likely won't notice a difference unless you are a world class target shooter.
>>
OP here...so Ive been digging around and Im torn between .308 and .30-06.

Whats your input between the two?
.30-06 seems more panic proof, but im not too sure on the cost difference between regular commercial rounds.
>>
Is Tikka a good babbys first durr/long-range rifle?

8mm Mauser ftw
>>
>>30372133

.308 and .30-06 are rather panic proof both being surplus compatible.
>>
>>30372166
It seemed after sandy vag, .308 went dry
>>
>>30372154
Is 8mm actually any good compared to .308?
Like is there a legitimate reason or do you just like it because you own some cheap milsurp rifle chambered for it?
