Project orion has been fully invested in by the DOD, each orion battleship will carry the full planned armarment, including a plethora of nuclear missles, casaba howitzers, railguns, and atmospheric bombers.

You have been put in charge of the troops the orions will carry. What kind of equipment and training do you give to orbital shock troops? How are they recruited? What else might you like to see them have (physical augments, etc)?

literally a real plan from the cold war. Not a game. Eat shit.

Also, here's muh soldiers onnamars.
Big fucking coil assisted rifles with smart-scopes (think that tracking-point one that kills shit for you). Fucking exoskeletons but only for the legs and back so they can haul ass or whatever. Mostly so they don't throw out their back carrying all the SPACE equipment.
>>
>>30370029
>only nukes.
>not antimatter bombs
If you gonna wank cool but impractical weapons, why not go all the way.
>>
>>30370139
Nukes > antimatter

Except for antineutronium

How does the ODST overcome blacking out during a drop? If I remember correctly didn't the red bull spacer jumper almost blackout from the jump?

future

>troops

drones.

sending something that needs life support into space is fucking stupid.
>>
>>30372043
Not with the orion project.

Literally millions / billions of tons into Leo for cheap as fuuuuck
>>
>>30372391
Like you can just use steel with shipyard construction quality parameters.
>>
>>30370029
When you say orbital shock troops do you mean that the ships are in orbit to deploy troops to the Earth or that they are to stay in orbit to fight forces also in orbit/aliens? Or both?
>>
>>30371955
Uuhhh ok i guess. Maybe pressurized suits or drop pods.
>>
>>30372442
Orbit to ground.

If you have cool ideas for boarding troops post em though
>>
Its best to mass produce. The cost for only one would be enormous, but with three or four the unit cost will seem more reasonable on paper.

The shuttles the Orion's carry have to be able to land and enter orbit under their own power, and will be used for supplying, personell, and orbital drops.

The Orion's will all have casaba howitzers and CIWS systems covering all angles, and they will all have at least one cannon to be used for orbital bombardment and fire support.

Their will have ungodly amounts of missiles and might illegally carry nuclear warheads. The missiles will almost be entirely full of high explosive to take advantage of launching in a low gravity vacuum. There will be bunker busters as well.

Each orion will carry enough fuel to patrol from earth to Saturn and will do so at least once a decade.

Each orion will have labs and facilities to accommodate scientists and research, separate from military accommodations. Each Orion will use casaba howitzers to clear out orbital debris and trash to ensure the safety of future space endeavors. They will escort colonists to Mars and Luna.

It will cost so much but be soo coool

Nah spread that shit everywhere. It's a good carrot for the stick of interplanetary colonization.
>>
>>30372391
>Literally millions / billions of tons into Leo for cheap as fuuuuck

Yes, and?

Just because you have a greater scale means nothing. Stripping life support for a human crew still saves weight and thus allows more drones and/or munitions to be stored.

Additionally, humans have many other failings in space combat that make them particularly unsuitable.

For instance, how do you establish a "beach head" when assaulting a planet that's not habitable by man? What's the weight of a life-support enabled FOB? What's the weight of all the individually wrapped oxygen needed for each soldier for the duration of the operation? What modifications to the orion design have to be made to protect weak humans against G forces vs. drones?

Humans aren't suited to space combat...
>>
>>30372935

No its not.

No motivation.

Just get god to make more earth, right? Only took him six days.

Space exploration and colonization is about man relying on himself to secure his future.

Or we could just ask god to magically create spaceships for us...
>>
>>30372964
>Or we could just ask god to magically create spaceships for us...

well, the protestant work ethic used god to magically the industrial revolution, so I don't see why it wouldn't work in space.
>>
>>30372951

Li-ion rebreathers powered by a portable reactor. One per squad.
>>
>>30372976

That was not god...

That was boredom, in my opinion.
>>
>>30373009
>Li-ion rebreathers

you mean a sham technology that might as well be cold fusion? Ok, yeah, sign me up.
>>
>>30373046

Li-ion EXISTS mothrrfucker.

I'm using it to communicate right now.

A company called Tesla is showing us what it can do.
>>
>>30373070
>Li-ion EXISTS

Right, but li-ion rebreathers do not.
>>
>>30372951
The orion. Does not need more munitions, they each have 500 plus 25 gt warheads.

And like 300 multi kiloton casaba howitzers

And pd guns

And cannons

And atmospheric bombers

And like 250-1000 men

Also drones a shit when it comes to space combat.
>>
>>30373105

They could, though.

Its just a battery powering a miniature air recycler and each squad will have a portable reactor.
>>
>>30372951
T. Retard that doesn't know about the orion
>>
>>30373120
>Does not need more munitions, they each have 500 plus 25 gt warheads

so why do you even want soldiers aboard?

also, if you have "250-1000 men", what are they going to be fighting with if not munitions.

>>30373127
>They could, though.

so could cold fusion, but it doesn't and it won't.
>>
>>30373139
what's wrong with my understanding about it?

and if we want to point out any retardation:

every one of /k/ space threads is retarded because their end results always try to look like gundam or halo, when real space warfare would look more like interplanetary mirv fights...
>>
>>30373157
I agree in the distant future (2100) that drones will make humans useless in terrestrial warfare.

But not yet, and not in special operations.
>>
>>30373181
Orions at max acceleration hit 3 g's
>>
>>30373181
Op here, thsee troops were specifically meant to go from Leo to surface.
>>
>>30373120

Uh...

No.

Too many mouths to feed. Redundant automation and electronics. The Orion's will need a lot of crew but the majority will be based on earth. Not space.

And by weight the Orion's would be half payload. They used payload to propel through space! You could use the propellant as a weapon also.

A good way to get around space treaty

They literally use nukes to push them to insane speeds.
>>
>>30373360

That's a waste though. We have things called "airplanes", you know?

Orbital troop deployment would only be used in severe or taboo operations.
>>
mufuggin tau battlesuits
>>
>>30373395
Orbit drop pods would be damn near impossible to take down

>come screaming in mach fuck on a arc towards the landing zone

>rcs system to sear to target can also give an unpredictable flight path and effectively dodge (the one being shot at always has the advantage in terms of missle vs plane, and at these speeds the missle couldnt react in time)
>deploy retrorockets once low enough to the ground

If lasers coat them with a reflective coating.

And if manage to take down one, well cool you managed to kill like 1-10 guys.
>>
>>30373379
The 1000 men are soldiers not crew.

Also the orion does not circumvent treaties, no nukes can be brought into space or detonated in space period.

But I mean, whose gonna stop a nation with orions?
>>
>>30373638
Jizzzzzzzzzz for the greater good.
>>
>>30374216

But if you can drop 100 paratroopers for the cost of ONE drop pod.....

Then you better fucking spend those drop pods wisely to justify their existence.

>>30374248

You are not going to keep 1000 soldiers in space very long without cryogenics or some kind of metabolic control. I can't see how it's feasible to feed them.
>>
>>30371519
Do astro/cosmonauts black out every time they reenter?

Whatever
>>
>>30374596
It's a close thing.
>>
>>30375024
>>30375028

No.

I think the Orion's are best used to spearhead our dreams into outer space. Those numbers of troops are excessive but should be realistic for short term use.

The point isn't to build a planetary oppression vehicle, but to make us feel secure about colonizing other worlds.
>>
>>30375110
We already have nuclear powered planetary oppression vehicles. They're called aircraft carriers.
>>
>>30375122

But those can't patrol from earth to Saturn
>>
>>30375201
yet.
