Sup /k/

I spend a lot of time in the rocky mountains during the summer and was wondering, what is a good and compact(can fit in a standard backpack) firearm that can put down a moose or bear with minimal fuss.

Something around the $1000 range would be ideal.

That's off the top of my head

A Raging Bull will run you ~$800.

there's a video of a snowmobiling /k/ommando taking out a moose with a ... I wanna say... M&P 40
>>
>>30368563
Cv 527, but you better be a great shot cuase even with the best ammo 7.62x39 is less than id want for a moose, on the other hand its real light and compact, acurate as hell and about 700 bucks, id keep it irons youll need to get close anyhow.
Im sure some one makes a 7mm ultra light, maybe tikka
>>
how bout a Chiappa 1892 takedown?
Most if em run pistol ammo but hot .45 Long Colts should take a moose down. I could be wrong though, never shot a moose.

It doesn't matter what you get if it's in your fucking backpack where you can't get it when you need it. And, if you have time to fuck around and dig it out of your backpack, you probably could have avoided whatever situation you've gotten yourself into.

It was a Glock 19 actually. Shot placement is everything.

Glock 20, ya dingus.
>>
>>30369820

Dude he was carrying it without a round chambered.

No one who sprung for 10mm would do that.
>>
>>30368563
Compact? Reliable? stops moose and bears? You're looking for the Glock 29, or the slightly larger Glock 20 like anon suggested

Ruger hawkeye compact in .308 cant attest to moose but under 100m it works well on Sambar Deer in Aus

OP don't listen to anybody who says a handgun will stop a grizzly. A Canadian zoologist conducted a major study on the best way to repel an angry bear, and they came to the conclusion that bear spray is your best bet. Among the guns they tested, .44 magnum was "minimally effective", so anything smaller will just piss the bear off. If you want to bring a gun (which isn't a bad idea, it should just be a secondary option for dealing with a bear) then your only real option would be a 12 gauge with slugs. A Dominion Arms Grizzly (pic related) or Winchester 1887 should be able to fit in a backpack and will actually stop a bear.

Browning Lightweight '81 Stainless Takedown in .300 Win Mag with a shortened stock and a 13" barrel

>around the $1000 range
For the gun itself, sure. The tax stamp and gunsmithing will bump it up a few hundred, though.

>>30368563
454 Casull or other large revolver.

Slug guns are so much cheaper though. You could buy a slug gun and a thousand slugs for the price of the snowflake AR.

My grandfather told me about when he was charged by a bear. He shot it 3 times in the face with 12ga. slugs and it didn't drop, his buddy had to shoot it with his .308 to stop it. Terrifying.
>>
>>30369810
I like the part where he runs over its ankles to make sure it stays down.
>>
>>30374919
This, I have seen a Grizzly taken down by a AR-10
>>
Charging bear head on towards you? Bear mace.

You can kill them with something simple as bow and arrow with a side shot though. Better to escape (not run) if you are in situation where side shot is possible.

Moose? Mag dump with any pistol into the chest.
>>
>>30374919
was it a foster slug? There are special hardened lead slug offerings from Brenneke and Dixie.

Mine got burnt up in a fire 3 years ago.

I still miss that gun. I had the stainless guide.

Anyone who has hunted moose will tell you they aren't as tough as you think. Elk are a lot tougher to drop. Get some bear spray for the bears and a good .357 or better for anything else.

I'm sorry anon. Do you have a safe yet?

Bear spray, 12 ga (pistol grip?) 45 70 (do they make these mare's foot?) OR other Mangum lever/revolver (casull 460 480 44 w/e) maybeee 357 if you have some crazy solid penetrator (shot placement is everything) if I was really worried and had money maybe an sbr 458 socom (or pistol) you want semi auto or manual? Long arm or handgun?
>>
>>30369810
rekt.

I wouldn't have approached like that though.

I CC this every day in case I (literally) run into a moose or a pack of somalians.

Lots of ammo in the 20''+ penetration range
>>
>>30376482

Sure you can do it, I'm just saying what the study found to be most effective that's all. Just because .308 will work doesn't mean that it's your best option.

Yeah but I dont think I would have helped. It was at my father in-laws cabin and the entire thing burnt down.

Aren't you concerned that the deep-penetrating bullets you'd want for bears would zip through Sammies like they weren't even there and have extremely limited terminal effectiveness?
>>
>>30368602
The video you're thinking of has a G29. 10mm put it down in 2 shots.
>>
How would M855 work on bear/moose out of a standard AR? Assuming you would be aiming for the head face.
>>
>>30380542
Probably fine, as long as it penetrated the skull rather than sliding off.

>>30379528
basketballs aren't very big in comparison to bears

>best option.

I'd say some hot .30-06 hunting loads in a semi auto capable of handling the heat (pic related) would be your best option for taking down Mr. Grizz or damned near any massive critter for that matter.

On a side note does, anyone know if the modern Browning BARs 30-06s will take the old 20 round army issue BAR mags?
>>
>>30385914
No. The Browning BAR and M1918 are completely different guns with no parts commonality that have similar names for marketing reasons.
>>
>>30368563
A good revolver with Underwood extreme penetrator ammo. 44 to be safe. 357 if you feel ballsy. Even grizzles with their nigh bullet proof skull will drop after 1 or 2 shots to the head.

Sourse: I killed a brown bear with 2 shots of underwood 357 to the head. Fucker about chased me up a tree.
>>
>>30386995
>I killed a brown bear with 2 shots of underwood 357 to the head.
Congratulations on surviving your bear encounter, but people have killed bears with .22LR before. Anecdotes about STOPPIN POWAH are meaningless. What we need is for someone to develop FBI-style penetration standards for bears and then develop loads to meet those standards.
>>
>>30369782
this. the ballistics are comparable to a 12 gauge slug. im probably getting one when i move to alaska
