NJ here, and honestly I don't think we're quite as bad as CA or NY.

From what I gather, it wasn't necessarily reliability in sand that was the issue, but cost. Yes, however both upper and lower receivers are made from aluminum, not steel. Al is MUCH easier and faster to cast and machine.
Additionally, from a machining standpoint, FAL receivers require many more individual critical machining operations to complete when compared to AR pattern receivers. As someone actually from california, and not someone who just repeats shit they heard growing up around anti west coast culture, i can tell you that California is definitely not the worst state to own guns. Its in the top 10, but its not in the top 5, thats for sure.
The only real stupid shit is the 10 day wait, 10 rnd magazine limit, and the handgun roster. Every other idiot law has a loophole, unlike most states.

And my point is that the FAL is no worse than the AR in the reliability department. I've only fired half the rounds through it that I've run through my AR, but that's only due to the cost of 308. The only time it's been less than stellar is when I try to use the blue plastic german training ammo, which is oddly shaped and binds up. The same ammo doesn't feed right in my ishapore enfield either.

I just like how only a couple of people mentioned hawaii in this thread, when that state should be in the top 3 worst gun laws(even worse than commiefornia). Back when i lived there, it was such a big hassle to keep firearms let alone purchase them while on the island. We actually did away with our class B - we now have a FID (firearms ID card, good for basically fudd guns and nothing else) and LTC-A (everything else, including concealed carry). More counties are becoming de-facto shall issue.
But we still have the shitty AWB, 10 round magazine limit, no mail order ammo as you mentioned, etc. License is good for 6 years and while $100 / 6 years is still shitty (and imo unconstitutional) it's not too bad, practically speaking.
