Electrical engineer here. Common core is all sorts of fucked and both answers are not equally valid. It is correct that in pemdas, p>e>m=d>a=s as some anons stated. In the cases they are equal, you go from left to right. The issue here is with the notation and the fraction is not typically represented with the / (can never remember if it's a back or forward slash) and is instead represented in the standard numerator over denominator form which removes what some would call ambiguity. It's pretty straight forward but I can easily see how it can be forgotten considering most people really have no need to remember it anyway.

You are correct about the issue with the division. The other issue is not reading from left to right. Which is the standard way to preform operations. So 2*3/6 should be 1. It does not make sense to do the division first then multiply. Ideally you can just put parentheses around each separate operation to remove all ambiguity.
