They Saved Pvt. Ryan

Don't know how they fared theater wide in the west or east but they were responsible for decisive actions in mass operations (normandy landings) and smaller operations. Of course how this compares to other elements of the army I have no clue.

not as effective as the devils brigade

They were pretty much the navy seals of that era.
Very little casualties and Hitler himself was aafraids of the army rangers and called them devil dogs

Half of them got rekt. The other half did pretty well though it was hard for the Army to find proper uses for them. Cabanatuan was a rare case where their skills were used to the max, rather than just throwing them at strong points because they were more competent than regular infantry so ti was more likely they could take the position with fewer losses.

they were pretty sick

The only things I know about the Rangers in WW2 were the Pointe du Hoc landing and the Cabanatuan Raid. They seemed pretty damn effective.

Well but, the doctrine was flawed.

Take top soldiers, put a lot of resources into them, throw them into the situation they're most likely to get killed in.

Great asset. Shitty doctrine not designed to preserves said asset.
>>
>>30363117
This, they're paratroopers.

You mean what we do today with our best? Reduce casualties and fail rate by collecting and analyzing massive amounts of intel beforehand.
>>
>>30363322

No. Preservation of top (SF) assets is number one on the list. The idea - starting with Army SF and eventually filtering to all Tier-1 units - is that they are too valuable to lose, and that sort of risk is avoided when a regular leg will do.

Back then, it wasn't a consideration. They were used in the same way as regular infantry, except in worse situations.
