>Fix the mental health systems!

Why didn't the US have mass shootings in the 50s when guns could be bought by mail and psychiatric medication was almost nonexistent? Most of the mass shooters were already taking psychiatric meds as well, though that is never reported because it disrupts the media's narrative.

I believe mental illness is caused by a sick society, and that money would be better spent on promoting the 2 parent household and positive experiences for young men than pumping tax dollars into unenforceable gun control or a pseudoscience based on drugging people's problems away.
>>

1) We didn't have mass shootings by whacked-out teens on psychotropic drugs or Muslims until we started creating and/or importing them.

2) Any power you give to the government to define 'mental health' will be abused. You ought to know that by now. Hell, here in Califailia they can grab your guns for 21 days on the secrete testimony of a family member that they *thought* you might be dangerous -- and they want to expand that now to your friends, coworkers, and doctor. This is not a good idea.

I would say you are right. We as a nation need to take a long, hard look at mental health in this nation, and how we can reduce the stigma of having an issue and how we can better get care to these individuals.
Instead we just bark about guns and try to fuck over people who did absolutely nothing wrong to distract from the issue. It's sad.
>>
>>30348473
>how exactly are we creating mentally ill people?
We aren't. But a lot of parents are medicating them instead of disciplining them. It's big money, as the adverts on late night TV indicate. We didn't have this problem in the 1980's or before. It didn't exist. Most of the genuinely mentally ill are harmless. Mess with their brain chemistry...? We see what happens.

But as with Islamic terrorism, the problem is obviously with the weapon they use and anyone who argues otherwise is a fascist.

The only thing that stopped them is that the democrats want a little harsher restrictions added and neither party is willing to vote for the other side's proposal. Political gridlock was the only thing protecting our rights today.

According to the boston globe there have been 411 people killed in mass shootings from 2004 to today. In 2013 alone police in the USA killed 516 people (467 of whom were shot by police) according to the CDC. Police kill ten times the people that spree shooters do.

I think that modern society has a massive stigma attached to mental illness that prevents people from actually seeking treatment for mental illness or encouraging friends and family members with mental illnesses from seeking treatment.

Like if you get any kind of treatment for any kind of illness regardless of what it is you end up in half a dozen state and government databases and find yourself barred from many types of employment and generally being interrogated about it whenever you try an do anything more involved than buying milk.

Treating everyone who got help because they sometimes have a panic attack as if they were like a violent criminal and a threat to society, which is essentially what the government does right now, doesn't exactly scream "It's okay to get help". It does the exact opposite, it tells people who think they might be having psychiatric problems that they should probably hide it.

When the whole sandy hook shit happened all the liberals went fucking crazy spouting off about how mentally ill people are dangerous and shouldn't be allowed to do basically anything because they're all violent lunatics, apparently forgetting that literally 20% of the US population has a diagnosed mental illness of some type.

Gun legislation targeted at people with mental illness is just an example of people who want to pass any law they can aiming down the path of least resistance.
>>
>>30348132
This is bullshit. It is a meme that organizations like the Brady Campaign use to push gun confiscation. The plan is to pass seemingly common sense laws and then expand and expand their scope. There are tens of millions of US citizens with mental health issues. Very, very few of them pose a threat. Only a couple have committed mass shootings.

Dems voted down the Republican proposal because it gave only 3 days for a US atty to argue to a judge that the person should be blocked a sale because they pose a risk (Dem proposals wanted blockages without going thru judge). The argument was 3 days was not enough time to gather a case and then present it, which it probably isn't enough time.

No he wasn't. The shutdown of metal health facilities in the 80s was also due to a rare situation in where the left and right agreed on something. The left thought it was awful to keep the mentally ill locked up and the right thought it was a waste of money.

It's true. People can harass and even threaten you daily and there's nothing the police can do to stop it. Muslims used to follow military wives in the town I lived in and harass them about their husband's jobs. The police can't do anything until they actually go through with it.

It sucks, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

>acceptable casualties

The tobacco and booze industries have shown us that a significant body count is acceptable, provided there's a healthy profit involved.

Figure, guns kill roughly 30K people per year. Booze kills about 3 times that many per year, and tobacco takes 16 times that many lives per year.

Unlike booze and guns, tobacco has no redeeming societal uses. As long as our culture tolerates tobacco, we'll have guns.

CMP was a real thing back then, and schools actually had competitive shooting teams.

The cultural mindset that leads to mass shootings evolved out of the GCA, which was a knee jerk response to the specter of armed black people in our streets. The RFK and MLK shootings were the fortuitous circumstances which allowed it to be drafted in the first place.

An interesting point of procedure: These were cloture votes, not votes to submit the amendments. You can read the wikipedia article if you want, but cloture means debate stops and you vote on whether or not to vote, and then you make the vote that actually matters if the first vote passes (afik). Basically, a failed cloture motion means you're deciding not to decide.

It's not over. The only solid decision that was made today was to table the bill in question. So go ahead! Drink and be merry, for at least you know that the beast has chosen not to attack, but merely to slumber.

>But how exactly are we creating mentally ill people?

By diagnosing ADD/ADHD and medicating kids instead of interacting more with them. And, lets take a look at the amount of sugar in a typical pre-adolescent diet now as opposed to 40 years ago. How many of those diagnoses are simply kids being sugared to the gills? Then we dump $2500 worth of electronics on them, give them high speed internet, and tell them to be good.

A certain amount of blame can also be laid at the feet of educators. Remember the culture of participation awards? Kids were getting the message that winning doesn't matter, as long as you tried. Problem is, trying and falling short is how kids learn to improve. So you had a half generation of kids coming out of school who weren't ready for real life. They didn't know how or want to improve on their shortcomings, because they'd always been taught that whatever was good enough. That's not the case, irl. These kids started shutting down and tuning out, because they didn't have the coping tools. And then some of them turned into supreme gentlemen.

Democrats showed their true colors today when they voted against Grassley's and Cornyn's amendments. Grassley's was objectively positive and aimed to improve NICS and mandate better reporting between LEAs and NICS regarding mental health and other reasons that would keep you from buying a gun. Cornyn's was shitty compromise amendment mechanically identical to Grand Lich Feinstein's but contained provisions for due process. ONE Dem voted for Grassley. TWO voted for Cornyn. Almost EVERY Republican voted for both. The reason these amendments did not proceed was Democrats despite them containing the exact shit that Democrats' cry about wanting.

After today I can never vote for a Democrat again.

the nation has a serious issue with eroded social support and social ties.

Just be sure to bring it up when you inevitably hear the whining about it. The NRA supported two proposals that were effectively toned-down versions of what the Dems were proposing, only incorporating foreign concepts like "due process."

Shit, had the Dems not resorted to the same partisan dickwaving they always whine about the GOP doing, those proposals would have passed with something like 90 votes.

The headline was "All 4 gun bills defeated" or something like that. It's actually pretty entertaining to see how many people see that and blame the NRA without realizing their own party fucked them over. Just goes to show how uninformed these retards are.

Doesn't matter if it's reasonable or not. The Constitution does not require the evidence be suppressed. Evidence from a warrantless search was fully admissible for over a hundred years, and has still been partially admissible for the last hundred.
Again the Fourth Amendment provides a prohibition but no remedy. Even the exclusionary rule only provides a judicial remedy for people who were illegally searched while actually breaking the law. If you weren't breaking the law and get illegally searched you get jack.

FYI taking a tally is what they do for every call on every issue really. They've got a computer system to log calls into by issue and what they said. They'll also use it to generate a mailing list for letters about whatever you called them over.

Huh. They may know they're getting calls from outside the state and aren't planning to mail responses. Or his office may not do it at all.
Either way fake zip codes are something to look up ahead of time if you're gonna call an out of state congressman. You can always say you won't give your address because you don't want mail. But if you can't give a zip code in their district/state they'll ignore the response.
