They're good rifles, but not worth the increased price. Unless you live in Canada where they still go for $200-250, then it's a good deal.

From what I've seen they're pretty tough, a decent little survival carbine if there ever was one.

i disagree. a semi auto 7.62x39 for around $400 USD vs WASRs which are currently $650+.
if caliber isnt a big deal then maybe something else, but for your budget, its either this or a cheap AR

Yea, they're good guns. But the value for them are mostly gone now. It boils down to if you'd rather have an SKS over an AK or the other way around at this point.

dont get me wrong, i would also prefer a detachable mag ak pattern rifle over the sks, but for $500 and in this market, his options are slim.
$500 gets you a decent yugo sks and maybe half a case of 7.62x39, which is not a bad deal IMO.

For less than $700 you can get a complete good quality beginner AR that blows the doors off the SKS for everything but bayonet stabbiness, slav memes, and deer hunting, and you can just get a replacement upper and some .300 Blackout ammo for the deer.

I'm just using $500 for the gun itself, ammo is an afterthought. Good thing is the ammo is priced nicely and I have a gift certificate to buy some.
