Hey guys.

I'm looking for a reliable watch. I'm not fond of any fashion watch or whatever you call them.

I saw someone post about a Vostok amphibia that was used in two moon landings and one soyuz mission.

I want that type of watch. Military, maybe diving watches, that have a good mechanism, are sturdy, well built, and look reasonably good.

Would you happen to know any watch that fits the description?

I'm oogling the Citizen diving watch right now.

Hamilton are an american company that used to make military watches. they moved their production to switzerland for better quality. sapphire crystals, automatic movements, water resistance, all that great stuff

Laco Aachen is a replica of the watch you've posted. It's probably one of the cheapest automatic watches with saphire crystal you can get.

Omega speedmaster professional. Was issued to Apollo astronauts. Used in EVA/on the moon.

Sinn watches are ugly (in my opinion) but are known to be quite sturdy. The sinn U1 is known to be extremely tough. Made of submarine steel. Makes it very anti magnetic and corrosion resistant. Rated to 100 bar (1000 meters water resistance)

Who spends $3k on a faggoty bracelet that lets you know what time it is?

That money is better spent on guns and a $10 Casio F91W.

>But muh status piece

I didn't get rich buying ludicrously overpriced watches though.

>>30329926
a Casio F91W won't be reliable in SHTF or innawoods.

I'm in the same boat as OP. I need something that I can take into the artic wilderness and not have to worry about it breaking for the rest of my life.

They are actually posted ironicly on /g/ watch threads.

Just get a g-shock, any type of g-shock will be rugged as shit, particularly a mudman.

The thread asked for a good reliable watch. Those are both proven to be reliable. Those are both automatic so they don't need batteries and will basically run until you die. There was no price range specified. I don't find that watches are stairs pieces and i don't care if you're on welfare. I gave the best answer to the thread topic that i could think of. That sinn is ugly as fuck and overpriced but that thing is also a straight up tank of a watch, which is what i thought the op was asking for. Besides the price, i invite you to give me a reason why the two watches that i suggested are unacceptable according to the op's (broad) criteria.

The money you would spend on something you described would be far greater than what you'd spend on a g-shock + getting a new battery ever 5 years or so for 40 years.
There is a reason G-shocks are used by nearly everyone in the military and sold in most PX stores,
>>
>>30330004
It seems like much of the value is historical. I also wonder about its durability in wilderness scenarios.

>>
>>30330043
For the speedmaster i can see that being arguable. But it also does mean that the watch will function in the hostile environment of space. For example, if someone vouched for the reliability of a particular weapon based on past combat stats, does that mean that the vote of confidence is only based on the "historical significance"? No. It's a tried and tested piece of equipment.

As for the sinn, i think it's a pretty lesser known watch and hasn't really been used in anything significant (that i know of). It's just the toughest watch i can think of. Tested to 100 bar? That's ~1000 meters of water. That's 100 earth atmospheres of pressure. plus it resists magnetism which is a large danger to watches and salt water corrosion which is another large danger.

Sweet I finally have a reason to post this.

It's a military hamilton, I think I got it for $200.

I gain only 7 seconds a day so about a minute over a week. Not too bad for a hand wound mechanical watch, especially for the price.

Very sturdy, I also like the slip through band with the still pins so I know it won't just break out of nowhere.

Casio F-91W.
I've owned pricier watches, but I can't get over how awesome this thing is.
This watch is super cheap, weighs next to nothing, nearly indestructible and super reliable. It's digital and has a light, if you're into that kind of thing. It isn't the prettiest, but you won't even notice it on your wrist. If it breaks (it won't ) you can replace it for less than $15 bucks.
>>
>>30329969
Yes it fucking will. I was stationed in Alaska for 3 years and I wore mine the entire time. It survived weeks in the field in negative degree temperatures and has had zero issues the whole time I've owned it. I replaced the battery one time (which cost more than a replacement watch, but eh, sentimentalism).
>>
>>30330195
Main point of failure is the strap, get a nylon NATO strap (G 10 I think?) off Amazon for about two bucks.
>>
>>30330206
I will say that the buckle is pretty shit. But I haven't had a problem with it. The watch portion is perfect in every way. I haven't had the strap break yet. If it does, I can just buy a new one for 12 bucks and move on with my life.

>>30330236
100% agreement, just a tip for anyone else reading and about to buy. Get the replacement strap with the watch and cut the old strap off minute one.

I'm definitely going to buy another one.
It never leaves my wrist, not when I sleep, not when I shower, not when I kayak, or rock climb, or when I go out wearing a t shirt and jeans or when I wear fancier clothes. It's incredibly versatile to wear, and suitable for any task you can think of or accomplish.
I went swimming with it the other day and rotated the bezel to the minute hand and timed how long I was swimming.

G-Shock 5600

Everything you need and nothing you don't, it's like a Casio F91W but much tougher. It's the least fussy G-Shock, so if you want something cheap, easy to read, extremely durable with great battery life then it's probably the best option.

If you really don't care what it looks like-minded Casio G Shock. It is a digital quartz watch. That type of watch is already a tank, and the G-Shock just puts like a giant bumper cover over it. Depending on the model you get stopwatch, alarms, date, and some come with a compass and all that shit. The only issue I have ever had with them is their bands are a rubber material and they tend to just get breaky after a while. I think they look like absolute dogshit though.

If you want a quartz movement (great timekeeping) in an analog face (it makes you look like you aren't a twelve year old try hard) a Timex Expedition is your poorfag choice, and Citizen is your slightly expensive choice.

If you want an automatic movement (actual clockwork gears, the hand moves across the face more smoothly, it is just a very aesthetic watch movement, doesn't need batteries, but the timekeeping isn't great) then the Seiko 5 Sport is the canonical cheap quality military style watch. Another company owned by Seiko but which makes their own movements is called Orient. Both these companies make very classy looking military style watches. They aren't fashion watches because they are very functional. One step up is Hamilton, very good watches but you are looking at 300 dollars plus, easy, for a Hamilton. If you aren't "into" watches, probably don't go with Hamilton.

OP you don't need a goddamn Omega or a Rolex. The fucking autists on this board I swear.

My final recommendation, if all you care about is durability, Casio G-Shock. For their bad looks when the nukes fall and all that's left is cockroaches they will know what time it is off of a G-Shock. If you want something that makes you look like you give a fuck what you look like then Citizen is your best bet. If you want to look good AND antiquated clockwork gears get you going, Orient Aviator or Seiko 5 sport.

cheap, durable, accurate timekeeping
>Vostok Amphibia
~$50
200m dive watch, automatic winding mechanical movement, all made in-house by Vostok in Chistopol, Russia. Best dive watch that you can buy in this price range.
I recommend the 420 case for this, the others are kinda big. Tens of dial options, most popular of which are the "diver-dude" dials.
>Vostok Komandirskie
~$30
Tough handwind mechanical watch, also made in-house in Russia
The 431 case is the one I have. It's big enough to be a man's watch, but small enough that it doesn't look like invicta shit. Tens of dial options are available for them, I have the VDV dial. The black tank dial or clean numbers-only dials are also a good choice.
>Seiko 5
~$60
Japanese-Malaysian made automatic mechanical watch, more accurate than the Vostoks. Classiest watch you can buy for the money (unless you look at the Orient Bambino, but I don't know much about them).
The entry level Seiko 5's have a field-watch design as well as exhibition caseback so you can show the chicks your fuckin sweet balance wheel action.

I personally have owned my 'dirskie for a year now and it's been great. I swapped straps on it (OEM strap is god-awful, buy a NATO strap for it) and installed a new bezel (pic related).

I don't like quartz watches, even though they are generally more accurate. More care and work goes into making a mechanical watch, making them infinitely cooler.

I really like the speedmaster, and kinda really want a seamaster 300m
>>
>>30338944
My omega seamaster fullsize 300m quartz watch has spent the last nine years riding around on my wrist.

Status: Like New (really)
Battery life: about 6-7 years
Accuracy: Between 1-5 minutes slow per year
>>
>>30339003
oh and list price was $1800, i paid $1300 from a dealer that did

THIS!

Get a GWM5600 with tough solar and world time. Throw a bull bar and a NATO strap adapter on that sucker and forget about it for the next 10 years or so.

Those are seriously badass watches.

I wear my G-Shock a lot and bought it for $40-50. Thing is tough as fuck and has many options. I like my Seiko and Longines but my G-Shock is the go to.

A 'back to flawless' clean/service through an Omega Service Center should cost you about $495 USD, with bracelet. You could get an indy to do it for a little over $200, with less polishing and part replacement. Service interval: Every 5 years

My battery change cost about $45 with new seals and waterproofing from an indy.
>>
>>30339265
That being said I love my Hamilton.
kek

Probably not need for an Omega
>>
Many real ops guys are issued Suunto watches. Many are military x-landers, my first was an Advizar. You are really tier one if you need a barometer and heart rate monitor.
>>
>>30339225
Nice watch. It couldn't have survived the last nine years on my wrist though i mean c'mon, that's 'dont wash your hands' tier durability

Also there's quartz omegas from 1970s still going strong, the biggest problem is some of them used currently obsolete mercury batteries

Pretty muchos this.
Except citizen isn't only a mall fashion brand and packs up a lots of tech.
Their ecodrive is superior to Seiko solar and their high end quartz are far better than even Grand Seiko.
Not that you'd want to spend several thousands on a quartz anyway.

I'm a huge WIS and own dozens of mechanical watches but for operation nothing beats a cheap solar quartz. Much lighter thinner and more functions. Way more reliable than any automatic
i do own a sinn 856 and a Damasko DA36 and they are great indestructible beaters but they can't beat quartz.
If you want to splurge and spend several hundreada get a Seiko astron.

I can assure you that no Amfibia has ever been to the moon. Unless some shit-hammered Ivan went bobbing for mines off Murmansk and ended up blowing himself there.

That being said, I like Vostok. They're pretty accurate (my new Amfibia runs about 8 seconds slow per day, my vintage Komanderskie is about 5 fast) and pretty tough. Only my GWM5600 Casio and my Amfibia would I trust to their rated depth limit.

That being said, the lume is shit, the stock band is worse and setting the date on the fuckers requires the sacrifice of young virgins. Wear them for the novelty or the simple comfort of knowing that your $70 diving watch could take a beating that would make a truck stop hooker sweat.
>>
>>30339688

That is a goddamned rebranded Vostok.

And of course it's safe from EMP. They all are! No watch is vulnerable to EMP because they're tiny little Faraday cages.

Also, it's a fucking auto.

Jesus.
