Just starting a collection, but also fun, self/ home defense, etc. I plan on getting at least 5 before the end of next year, unless I buy one that's just ridiculously expensive.
My Grandad was big in the industry. One of the higher ups in Meprolight, represented Kimber, Colt, Browning, and a bunch more, but all his guns got tied up in a legal battle, and a shady attorney made off with alot of his cash, so my parents and aunts and uncles sold lots of them to pay funeral costs etc.
He was like my idol, so eventually, I want to get something collectable to pass down as an heirloom, too. But not until I have a good collection going.

Wait, I correct myself, for a good starting caliber, 22lr is perfect. Bolt action or semi auto in 22 is great fun and very inexpensive.

For handguns I can recommend getting a revolver. They are simple, reliable, sexy as all hell and a blast to shoot. You can get them relatively inexpensive too. Try to get something that can fire .38 special.
