It used to be cheaper, and is pretty effective on whitetails at 50-70 yards in forest.
Today I would say .223 is objectively superior as an intermediate cartridge though. 5.45 would be cool if it were more widespread, but at this point I think the boat has pretty much sailed in favor of .223

The 7.62x39 is an amazing round for SBR. Fired out of a 12.5 inch AMD-65 barrel compared to their 16 inch cousin only loses 80fps.
