What's /k/'s take on caseless ammo?
is it the wave of the future or is it too impractical to really gain traction?

It's great for saving weight which is becoming more and more of an issue (thus the development focus on exoskeletons), but due to it not being "backwards compatible" and it not being Nato standard it is unlikely that any western nation will adopt it as its standard ammunition anytime soon.
I don't think anybody has complete nailed it yet. The ammo is usually fragile or cooks off more easily. LSAT project is working on it so hopefully we'll have something. But if a company releases more weight/space-efficienct powder propellant before caseless ammo kicks off you can bet that caseless will be delayed for a few more decades

We've had caseless ammo since what, the 16th century? They've been rendered obsolete once already, i dont see it coming back.
New British recon vehicles will be using 40mm telescoping ammunition.

Just kill yourself.

That isn't caseless.

What's the point?

Less space taken - more rounds

It's mainly case of material technology.
First you need some heat resistant stuff that would also make good barrels (and reasonable cheap).
Second you need something that would be fairly rigid and waterproof but at the same time would burn in right temperature (for round).
Using modern technology you could make caseless revolver (it doesn't have problem with jamming when misfire and cylinder could be made out of heat resistant ceramics).
For mag feed gun it would probably have to be some Dardick like stuff.

Also no brass in the face.

Garbage.

add literally 50% ammo storage space over the same conventional round.
bradley m3a3 can store ~1200 rds 25mm by standard, now start using telescoping 25mm and you can now hold ~1800-2k rounds in the same space
this makes much more sense for larger vehicle weapons where weight isnt really the issue, as opposed to joe schmo 11b being able to carry 100 more rounds at the same weight or normal load at less weight.

Fucking Kraut magic
I don't understand why they don't make caseless ammo for hunters. without the need for full auto. there basically is No cook off issues and it could help increase the amount of ammo taken on hunting trips.

>fudds
>space magic
pick one
in all seriousness cock-off isn't only problem.

basically volcanic rocket ball
>>30307844
There's also a straight wall .223 concept that could double all .223 capacity for the same space. The bottleneck takes up that much room.
There's also this.

The bottom line is nobody wants to spend the money on caseless.

>nobody wants to spend the money on caseless
true to that, but rocket ball is hardly solution
