I just bought a Mini 14.

Before everyone hops on the inaccuracy bandwagon, I got it because I don't need a bullet button on it in commiefornia.... yet.

Alternatives to ar/ak thread?
>>
>>30300382
Is your mini a brand new one? If so the accuracy will actually be pretty decent.

Invest in an accustrut as well
>>
>>30300382
Are these going to be salty weapons next year? I kinda want to get one first if they are going to be.

I have been thinking of picking one up. How do you like it so far?
>>
Yes it is brand new, same as the one pictured.

They may be salty, considering that it is a centerfire with a removable magazine, then again who the fuck knows. They got exempted by name last time.

I love it! The styling is like a Garand and M14, which is fantastic in my book. That and it is much more usable than a neutered AR.
>>
All the functionality of a babby killing AR-15 and none of the stigma.

I love mine. It seems a little inaccurate, but I've only shot it a few times so i think it's more operator error.

I think I'm gonna put some optics on it this winter.

Also, mags are expensive as shit. The cheap metal ones suck shit. I've even had problems with the factory Ruger mags. If you can, buy the tapco 30 rd plastic mags. My gun loves those.
>>
>>30300423
If it does become a salty, then at least I still wont need a bullet button. Better buy one in the next year.
>>
>>30300382
I've been looking at getting one also. Is the inaccuracy thing as big an issue as people go on about? I hear that it isn't really an issue with modern ones.
>>
>>30300583
Get a barrel brace. Not at all a problem then.
>>
>>30300540
You have only shot it a few times, yet you offer up your expertise on the mags.
>>
>>30300583

I haven't noticed anything terrible, but I'm also not looking for sub moa groups at 4 miles, just something that works for your normal 300m and under stuff. It's about the same as my m&p sport.
>>
>>30300602
Well, the few times i have shot it, they plastic mags worked fine and the metal ones didn't, you autistic dickhead.
>>
>>30300540
>30 round pmag
>say's he's from CA

there's your answer
>>
>>30300382
How much did you pay?

Id get one but 750 is most id ever pay after fees + tax.
>>
>>30300583
The older models from series 180/181 will have accuracy issues due to a fucked up barrel profile. The new models are more accurate but arent exactly a scalpel
>>
>>30300703
850 out the door
>>
Great guns. I have one of the old 181 models (yay 1979!), and to be quite honest, I still have yet to encounter the dreaded QC issues everyone rails about.

To that end, I will admit that accuracy does degrade a bit when it gets hot. If you're pounding out 20 rounders in as many seconds, by the 3rd or 4th mag, there is noticeable degradation. I hear your gun with the better barrel won't have this problem.

The inaccuracy meme hasn't been a thing for over 10 years.
>>
>>30300382
You know what would make this gun easier to stomach.

If they milled a stripper clip guide into the receiver.

Can it even be loaded via the chamber?
>>
>>30300894
M1A
>>30300944
SKS provided it isn't a Yugo with grenade launcher
>>
I know a lot of people actually use these as truck and ranch guns, they're quite reliable, but since the action is open isn't it very susceptible to dirt, mud, dust, rain, snow, etc?

I recall reading some comparison between it (technically m14) and some other rifles and it just shat the bed on tests in rough conditions.
>>
>>30301308

First time I've ever tried it, but yes, you can actually load it from the top.
>>
How tough are Mini 14s? Can I take them innawoods or is it just a range toy. Also do they use AR mags or their own?
>>
>>30300894
Kel-Tec SU-16
Ares SCR
Those are the only two I can really think of. The Kel-Tec is lighter and cheaper (but difficult to find and the polymer pieces a little cheesy). The Ares is heavier but possibly more accurate & far more customizable.
>>
>>30300382
Can it take 5.56 AND .223, or just .223? I have read opinions on both sides in other forums. Some say the older models have a problem with 5.56 but the new ones are good to go, others say it son't matter, others say .223 only or you'll tear it up.
>>
>>30302077
>Some say the older models have a problem with 5.56

Some people are fucking stupid.
>>
>>30302077
New ones have stronger barrels and a better front sight.

>>
>>30302095
The issue (according to the posts and articles I'm referring to) was that although the cartridges are identical, the dimensions of the chamber were unsuitable for the hotter load of the 5.56, causing overpressure conditions and increasing wear and tear on the action.

Although an equal number of posts echo your statement.
>>
>>30302147
Nice. What year was that manufactured?
>>
>>30302187
It's a 580, so a new one

580s have removable rear sights.
>>
>>30302176
My first rifle was a mini14 and if I remember my research correctly all 580s can shoot 5.56 even if they only say .223 on them.

Not sure about the old ones

180 model. Fun shooter. Accurate enough if you're not being attacked by barns.
>>
>>30300382
Uh, you don't need a bullet button on an AR of AK in California if you just take off the regular pistol grip.
>>
>>30300423
given the way most salt guidelines go I doubt it.

mini-14 is a friendly wooden sporting gun after all :^)
>>
>>30300423
The only way they could be banned is by a blanket ban on all semi-autos, which there's strong evidence and precedent to suggest would be tossed by courts.

These new tapered barrels make all the difference.

Such a shame that this rifle never took off with the US military...
>>
>>30300382

I love my mini. Great gun and lots of fun. Good for around the farm or to keep by the campfire for yote defense.
>>
>>30302607
>>30302643
There's specific guidlines in CA about salty weapons. I know my m1 garand is clear because no fixed magazine, but I don't know if it actually bans what are currently considered featureless rifles with detachable box magazines.
>>
Discounting price. (Costs about as much as a decent ar15 upper after compliance in my state)

What other reasons would one avoid this if they had a boner for garand/m1 carbine action?

M1 Carbine is banned in NJ. I have a garand but too expensive to shoot tons of ammo through and I have an ar15 already so I have 223 ammo.

My Ar is 20" A2 Clone with a muzzlebrake and I want something more pointy for fun offhand shooting and occasional bench shit.
>>
>>30304172
>>
>>30302236
Every Mini-14 ever made other than the target model can shoot 5.56, they are just marked .223 cal. This includes 180 series.
>>
I don't know why they can't just use ar15 mags. Only complaint I have with mine
>>
>>30301741
>since the action is open isn't it very susceptible to dirt, mud, dust, rain, snow, etc?
It's basically a mini M14, hence the name. World War Fucking 2, Korea, and Vietnam weren't exactly a sunny day at the range, and the Garand action family did fine.
>>
...why not SKS?
>>
>>30305287
Sadly the SKS is not available in 223.

I have a chinaman sks and an ak already.

Are there any other similar carbines that arent hideous like the ARES SCR?
>>
>>30305426
Look around. There are .223 SKSes out there.
>>
>>30301892

Pretty tough. They used proprietary mags. There's a five round mag that's flush and a ten rounder that sticks out a bit. And of course twenty and thirty rounders, but they aren't California legal.
>>
>>30302077
Old models said .223 but could take either. The difference between 5.56 and .223 is a fairly recent thing. Back when the Mini was first created, nobody thought there was an appreciable difference.
>>
>>30301783
O'd jizz if Ruger made their magazine stripper clip friendly and have a feed guide on the reciever.

The mini-14 would then be the 5.56mm sks I've always wanted.
>>
Do you still need to get a bullet button in California for a Mini-14?
>>
>>30305426
The SCR looks really good with wood furniture.
>>
>>30309343
Nope. Best thing about it. There is no reason for an ar in California, it's uselesss.
>>
>>30302077
New versions can take either except the target(mini accuracy lol) which can only take .223 despite the stampings on the receiver saying one caliber or the other. The manual says as much.

Have never mini, have shot both without issue.

Lots of caliber conversions, barrel lengths, and handguard lengths and styles, too as part of the default kit.

Go to a free state and stock up on 30 round mags. This gun will survive the ban like it did in the 90s but now that there is 30 round mags you can get them to keep or if they ban them sell them for a diamond dozen

>>
>>30315152
I hole-hardedly agree, but allow me to play doubles advocate here for a moment. For all intensive purposes I think you are wrong. In an age where false morals are a diamond dozen, true virtues are a blessing in the skies. We often put our false morality on a petal stool like a bunch of pre-Madonnas, but you all seem to be taking something very valuable for granite. So I ask of you to mustard up all the strength you can because it is a doggy dog world out there. Although there is some merit to what you are saying it seems like you have a huge ship on your shoulder. In your argument you seem to throw everything in but the kids Nsync, and even though you are having a feel day with this I am here to bring you back into reality. I have a sick sense when it comes to these types of things. It is almost spooky, because I cannot turn a blonde eye to these glaring flaws in your rhetoric. I have zero taller ants when it comes to people spouting out hate in the name of moral righteousness. You just need to remember what comes around is all around, and when supply and command fails you will be the first to go. Make my words, when you get down to brass stacks it doesn't take rocket appliances to get two birds stoned at once. It's clear who makes the pants in this relationship, and sometimes you just have to swallow your prize and accept the facts. You might have to come to this conclusion through denial and error but I swear on my mother's mating name that when you put the petal to the medal you will pass with flying carpets like it’s a peach of cake.

I was gonna buy a ptr /k/. My birthday is this month.

But now i'm thinking of buying this.

I know they are innacurate. I know they have sight issues and expensive mags. I know ruger QC is in the shit most of the time.

But I keep getting drawn to this thing.

Am I overthinking things? I really want another 223 rifle and I have an ar atm.
>>

It's an old one that my grandpa gave me as an heirloom type of thing, it's the first gun I ever used at 7 years old. My trick back then was to pin my elbow in the sling. I still do it, makes it stable as fuck while standing. I'm pretty sure it was bought before metal handguards were a thing for the mini.

>>30315171
Hot damn. I might get that soon. Thanks for the tip!

I'm with you on that. Only problem is that if it gets taken, depending on your state it may, in a home defense shooting then the cops may """""lose""""" it.
