Built my new upper last night.

Tell me how much you hate it.

Bought the Ballistic Advantage barrel and the Aero Precision handguard from a website I've never heard of before, Granite Ridge Outfitters. Had free shipping and they were both cheaper than any similar website.

I've never heard of Ballistic Advantage before, but was told they're pretty reputable. Any thoughts?

I got this as a gift, I think it is about 6 years old.

I know next to nothing about AR's so heres my question.

It has a 20" barrel on it, can I just buy a shorter upper assembly for it? I already have plinking guns and rifles, looking for this to have more of a typical AR role.
>>

>>30295740

>>
>>30295741
You could just buy a shorter barrel.

Or you could buy a new complete upper and have a regular 16" upper AND a 20" upper.

People talk shit about the 20" but it's a perfectly capable length. When the rifle. Was originally designed it was designed with that length.

I did read that the one with the full length rail up top is actually lighter. Something about how they had to increase the thickness of the metal to provide the same strength for all the MLOK slots on the new one. It's only a matter of a few ounces, and it's only hearsay, I didn't do the actual research, but maybe keep that in mind.

I bought the railless version because of the clean looks.

Hey guys, how should I go about zeroing my ar15 at 100 yards with irons? Total newbie here.
>>
Can anyone give me a suggestion on a decent rifle?
I was in the Marine Corps, while in I carried an M4 as an nco, an m16 as a junior marine and an m249 saw as a boot. Outside of those and a few other marine corps related weapons I have no gun knowledge. I was thinking of getting an m4 because I'm familiar and they are a decent price, but I'd like any suggestion for a better choice.

Adjust sights to mechanical zero. Shoot three shots at target. Note position of impact relative to point of aim. Adjust sights accordingly. Repeat as necessary
>>
>>30296172

I typically zero at 50, mostly for windage, then step out to 100 and fine tune it.

I'm a big fan of the 50 yard zero tho, 50 zero = 200 zero. You'll shoot about 1.5 inches high at 100 yards with that zero, which isn't too bad.
>>
>>30296178

I'm a big fan of the a1 builds
>>
>>30296172
Zero it at 50 instead. It's less than 2 inches high at 100, and on at 200.

>>30296178
You could make an exact replica of an M4 if you wanted.
Is that something you'd be interested in?
>>
>>30296156
Ask for a bunch of swag
>>
>>30296202
Well again, I don't have any knowledge outside of the use of a rifle in the Marine corps. If an m4 is a decent choice I would be the most comfortable with getting one now because at least I know how proper maintenance with them. I just assumed since we had them in the Marine Corps they wouldn't be the best choice to own.

I found a gun store near me that have m4some ranging from 650 to 3200. I just would have no idea what brand or anything to go with.

Have fun with that.

I opted for 50y zero, as you're only an inch high at 100, dead on at 200, and 4" or so low at 300. Really damn versatile, and I dig the trajectory overlap.

>>
>>30296252
No, an M4 clone isn't going to be the fanciest rifle, but it obviously works well enough for the entire military.
As you know it matters more who the shooter is
You can't really get caught up on brands, because most things over a certain price range are usually going to work great.

Don't get too attached, now you have to send it off to get refinished to a proper A1 gray instead of the retarded A2 black they chose for some reason.
>>
>>30296366
I don't know if you'd want to spend this much, but here is an accurate top half of a military M4 with all the right brands and parts.
And remember that you have to weld the flash hider if the barrel length is 14.5" like a real M4.

Brownells is incompetent as all fuck, thay wouldn't even put up the scathing I review I submitted for their A1 upper because after calling me over it and hearing that I fixed the problem by drilling out the dust cover rod holes, they said "Oh, so you're satisfied with the purchase now?" and left it at that. I don't know what happened to them.
>except for some short stroking with the russian stuff
That stuff is persistently underpowered, especially if you're using Tulammo. Try switching to Wolf Gold, it's less than 10 cents more and you get much better ammo, complete with brass case.

>I take it I'll need to strip the upper and lower before I send it to get refinished?
Yeah, but it'll be worth it. Send them to John Norrell, ask for them to be redone in Grayish-Black Flat.

I had to do a retarded amount of work to get my Colt optic to seat in the upper sight channel. It just dropped in nicely in my old surplus upper, but the Brownell's NDS I had to fucking shave and recoating the channels in order for the optic to seat properly. I think they're getting NDS' rejects.

>I'm a little miffed
You should have been here when I realized the dust cover rod channels weren't drilled out. This was after a series of ordeals that happened as follows;
>Order upper from Brownell's
>Remember that I'm having Norrell refinish it immediately, ask if they can change the shipping address to his company
>"Lol sorry, we're using UPSMI, no can do!"
>"You're using the absolute worst shipping service in the US?"
>Upper finally shows up after over a -week-, two days late.
>Get that shit sent over to Norrell's.
>Norrell takes longer than usual, finally get it about 10 days later.
Only then, after installing the rearsight assembly, FA, and barrel do I realize I can't even insert the dust cover rod. Salty doesn't begin to describe it.

Oh they offered to, but I'm not paying another $80 and waiting two more weeks for my shit to get back. I just drilled out the channels, told Brownell's to suck a cock, and will never be buying from them ever again is all. It works fine now, but that salt will never fully dissipate. That was a three week ordeal that did not let up.

You could still get the upper from them, I'd just check it over right after getting it.

Put the barrel nut and mounting bracket on the barrel, put the barrel in the receiver, slide the rail and the front sight on the barrel, tighten rail, put sight into place (mine's a JP clamp on adjustable), put the muzzle device on.
A local gunsmith pinned it.

you can just remove it m8

Its two taper pins and they're usually in there pretty good. You will most likely need a .750 lo pro gas block. The .750 is the DIA of your barrel. I just did a SW conversion to a FF rail and lo pro gas block. Not hard at all.

The front sight will move further off center and blur out until it disappears from your field of view as magnification increases. The wider the field of view your chosen scope has the more magnification it will take to look past it.

This is a picture with a 1-4 Leupold which is in line with many tube style scopes. Prism style like an ACOG tend to have a wider field of view where more of the post is present at 4x.

Should I get a good bipod and a stubby grip, or just get a grip pod? I think the grip pod looks stupid as hell, but function>form

Yeah, it was just nasty and I had only wiped it down with a dry rag, I wiped it down with degreaser before clamping my rail to it. I cut the delta ring too and that's probably where it came from.

Not fraud, got the car for a really good price from a family member. It was in great condition. Still wish I hadn't crashed it.

Way to be that guy though. Post your rifle :^)
