Whats /k/'s opinion of the .44 Magnum? Too much for a hand gun? I have one of my own and i love blowing apart animals such as hogs and coyotes with full 270 grain.

.357 mag is too much if you ask me
>>
You mean putting holes thru. Only thing you will blow apart is a milk jug of water. Does anyone who posts here own a gun or even shot one?

10mm is better
>>
>>30292520
I'm nobody in this thread but sometimes I like to think my g19 is just gonna put neat holes in baddies, and my 357 will rip their organs out there chest.
>>
I don't see the point in it. 460sw if you want a good one shot KE round, 10mm if you want the most amount of KE down range in a reasonably controllable manner, as fast as possible (for a pistol).

357 mag is hilariously underpowered compared to its reputation.

Hunting would probably be among the more 'practical' utilities of a .44 handgun.

Not that more modestly sized pieces don't exist for other purposes.
>>
.44 is a versatile cartridge. It may be a little fuddy. But it's a powerhouse. Plenty of oomph for anything on this continent. And even more oomph if you buy a redhawk and use the buffalo bore or your own handloads. It's been around for a long time so they have it figured out.
>>
>>30291966
Yeah I have a ruger redhawk in 44 mag, it's my bear defense handgun in case my hunting rifle or AR doesn't go boom when I'm out in the country.

I also have it laying around the house in my desk when I'm not out. Woudlnt think twice about using it for home defense either.

I wonder how much different the ballistics are compared to the same bullet coming out of a lever action rifle.
>>
>>30293335
I have a lever action 44 and it's fucking great. It'll chew a big fat hole in a stump at a hundred yards.
>>
>>30293335
200-500fps depending in the exact load and gap between say a 4" and 20" barrel.

Some of the hotter loads run fast enough to warrant a stronger bullet design
>>
>>30291966
I think it's a great round, and am quite fond of my Super Blackhawk (7.5" barrel).

It's ideal for reloading (and horribly expensive otherwise). The brass lasts a long time and you can load from light 44 special to mid 44mag to full power.

I think any 44 mag should be have at least a 6" barrel. It is not a good round for light or short barreled revolvers. It generates tremendous flash and blast in full power loadings, but that also makes it fun to shoot. It's just a lot better to have more steel between you and the muzzle.
>>
>>30293677
I've seen 50cpr for bulk ammo. How many reloads does it take for a reloading setup to get cheaper?

My all time favorite cartridge.

I oc my vaquero all the time.
>>
>>30293835
It depends on what you wind up buying, and how much you were spending on ammo. Some rounds like 9mm wouldn't be worth it, but .44 mag or nearly any rifle round is usually worth reloading if you shoot a lot.
Honestly, though, I think most reloaders will say that they wind up not really saving money, but shooting a whole lot more.
>>
>>30291966

Good for just about anything you'll find yourself against. It's always been a favorite in my family so I've got a bit of a soft spot for it.

>Whats /k/'s opinion of the .44 Magnum?

Shitloads of fun.

>Too much for a hand gun?

Not particularly practical, unless you're dealing with Grizzlies; but who cares.

>I have one of my own and i love blowing apart animals such as hogs and coyotes with full 270 grain.

Cruelty to animals is often an early warning sign of mental illness anon. I don't object to hunting or pest eradication; but if you're killing things just for fun, you might have a problem.

>357 mag is hilariously underpowered compared to its reputation.
This is because most modern .357 Magnum is significantly downloaded from the original 1930's cartridge.
>modern .357 Magnum typically pushes a 158 grain bullet at 1250 fps
>The original 1934 load runs a 158 grain bullet at 1600 fps

I own a S&W 29-3 with an 8" barrel, anyone know the max load that this thing can shoot? Right now just using Winchester white box white tail and black bear.

You don't hunt shit

Is anyone on this board not an edgy teenager?

Those are pest creatures. People like blowing away prairie dogs as well.

I like shooting rabbits, as well as cooking them. Skinning and gutting is kind of a hassle, though.
>>
So realistically, how well will these solid copper babies perform against a bear?

Would they actually be better than a hollowpoint?

My first gun was a Marlin lever action in .44 Mag. My 2nd/3rd Pistols were Ruger Vaqueros in .44 Mag.

12 grains of AP 70 hand loaded was highly enjoyable to shoot. Large calibre cartridges are easier to reload too.

Being a revolver/levergun meant the loads could be greatly reduced for economy/learning reasons. Cycling was no issue obviously. When entertainment was required, loads could be increased to spastic, irresponsible levels.

Having a single pack of ammo for long gun and pistol was handy. FMJ rounds from the vaqueros would go through 3/4" steel easy.

I recommend such a setup to anyone who like to grin like a faggot.

Ausfag out.

Have one, too. They'll tolerate 240 grains at 1400 fps, but that's the upper limit. Anything loaded by one of the big ammo companies is safe.

HPs are for people, when shooting animals you want to go for penetration, so I guess the answer is yes if that bullet does it's job.

Very respectable

>Muzzle Velocity: 1530 fps
>Muzzle Energy: 1144 ft. lbs.

220 grains is the top end for 10mm

>Underwood 240 grain jacketed hollow point .44 Magnum

>Muzzle Energy: 1199 ft. lbs
Then there's this beast.
>44 Remington Magnum +P+ 340 Grain Lead Flat Nose Gas Check
>Muzzle Velocity: 1425 fps
>Muzzle Energy: 1533 ft. lbs.
Due to the amount of pressure generated by this +P+ loading we do not recommend it for every firearm. Safe firearms include, but are not absolutely limited to; Ruger Red Hawk, Ruger Super Red Hawk, Ruger Super Blackhawk or Vaquero, Freedom Arms Model 83, Taurus Raging Bull, Colt Anaconda and Dan Wesson Revolvers. Suitable rifles include T/C Encore, Marlin 1894, Winchester 1894, any rifle with a falling block action and the Handi Rifle.
