Same new person here. 11.5 yet is long range? Or is it a joke?
Can 18 in barrel and rifle length gas system be used over medium distance just as well, or is it that once you have a special purpose long range gun its not as fun / easy to use indoors?
>>30291178
Makes sense, I'll go BCM ELW
>>30291114
>buying LaRue mounts in the current year
>>30291259
11.5" is played out, 10.3" is the new hotness for long range.
What is the best "entry level" AR15 for somewhere around $600-$750? I'm in this price range simply because I'm going to be listing a rifle for sale/trade and that area is going to be what I am trying to get for it. If I were to flat out buy I'd just build a BCM or something.
My only AR is a Colt MT6700 that I've had for almost ten years now (got it on my 16th birthday) and I've only recently begun having the itch for a carbine length AR, and now thanks to all this political crap going on I'm kind of wanting to pick up something decent while I can.
>>30291259
Not...necessarily, but with good ammo and equal quality barrels an 11.5" only loses about 150m max supersonic range compared to a 20", and only about 90m compared to an 18".

>>30291416
Not saying they're really all that suited to it due to being much harder to steady, but it's doable.
Hell I compete in LR-tactical matches with an AR10 and there's a guy in my league that shoots a 10.5" 6.5 Grendel. He's routinely ringing steel out to 1000m with 123gr Scenars, and they're pretty bad on ballistic coefficient compared to other options.
>>30291459
So because the new thread started while I was in mid post, I'll post it again. I've been informed by some individuals that my rifle is garbage. What can I do to ungarbage it? I'm thinking of dropping the bipod altogether because I only really use it to sight in. I'm also thinking of swapping the PA1-6 for a red dot. Any suggestions would be nice.

Either way, the only thing I can think of that might be "garbage" on that gun is the barrel.
Also take about half of those covers off, as well as the rear handstop. I can't even tell what handguard that is.
Stock is fine (I know everyone sucks the SOPMOD dick around here, ACS-L is nice too).
Optic and mount are pretty good. Only optic that's really better costs $1700.
Muzzle brake is decent. There's better, but not for the money.
Bipod is fine. Atlas on an AR is dumb AF because they weigh several pounds.
Sights are good.
Milspec trigger is shit. Especially on a "precision" gun.

Need I post the series of pics of my completely fucked Colt upper from an LT107 I had mounted on it and properly adjusted for tension?
It crushed the rail in almost 0.40" under single-finger pressure the first time it was installed (displacing metal over the standard height and rendering 3 slots unusable because it squished the peaks of the rail into the slots), which was done by a professional gunsmith.

>>30292149
If their mounting system wasn't pants-on-head retarded, you couldn't fuck it up that badly without having to drive the lever home with a fucking sledge hammer.
BUT...it is pants-on-head retarded and being even slightly off on alignment (not even adjustment) will do it. Which isn't really user error.
>or your Colt upper was poorly heat treated
Somehow I doubt this, as this has never been an issue for any other Colt upper ever made in the entire history of AR's.
>Larueminati shilling Mark Larue's dickbag self again
And this is coming from a guy who owns an LT104. Mark Larue is a douche, his products are half-baked good ideas pushed to market too soon and with minimal testing, and instead of fixing what would normally be relatively minor growing pains for a new product the company enlists literal paid shills to cover up the issues and attempt to defame the people who call the product out for its shortcomings for all eternity.
>>30291913
>>30291913
Not sure. It came with my upper, but it's shot really well since I've had it. I'm not much of a rifle shooter, but I've been able to pretty consistently group around 1.5" using the mag as a monopod with the 1-6x scope shooting various .223/5.56 loads. Most of my recreational shooting is handgun oriented, so my rifles are mostly range/farm guns. My AR mostly sees the recreational aspect of it with the occasional coyote blasting.

IF that's the case then that's actually a testament to the mount.... just sayin.
sucks your upper is fucked up though..
>>30292379
1. regular paint works fine. aervoe if you want a spray paint thats a bit tougher.
2. youll need stencils for this but these pics are great
>http://www.russian-thunder.com/#!landscape-stencils/cpxv
3. "kleen strip" stripper works well (but its strong- some prefer citristrip), on some surfaces you might see a faint haze from the removed paint. once you paint a rifle and strip it, you might get 99% of it off but never 100%
>>30292379
Aervoe camo (spray)paint is the best. Krylon next best. Any enamel spraypaint will work though. If you're wanting to paint the barrel, use a high-temp enamel like engine block or grill paint.
Snakescale is the easiest. Go buy a $1 mesh laundry bag from somewhere like Dollar Tree, paint the gun a full base color, sack it up, and lightly spray stripes of at least one other differing color through the laundry bag. The tighter the bag is to the gun the better it turns out, and it looks best with significantly contrasting colors. Light basecoat with dark overlayer works better than the other way around.
More complex patterns require some form of stencil. These can be made with masking tape and wax paper (cover the wax paper with masking tape for rigidity, cut to desired shapes, remove wax paper and apply pre-cut tape to gun), or purchased commercially.
I don't know of any paint strippers that actually harm any of the finishes commonly found in AR's, but a few I have personally used with no issue are Citristrip and Krud Kutter graffiti remover.

>a 1" lever should not give enough leverage to fucking mangle heat-treated 6000-series aluminum at any strength level a human is capable of.
7000 series if it's a Colt
It is possible to amplify leverage, especially the way the larue mount works I could see it happening. The rotating portion uses a slope and you're turning it on the centerline axis using that lever. Not hard to generate force using this method I think.
Don't force shit. You would have felt a warning resistance even if it was being amplified by their system...
Thanks for sharing though, maybe you're right and it's just an unnecessary design but i'm always skeptical. Like I said 99% of the time people are dumb and do stupid shit. I probably won't get a larue mount though.... still on the fence about it

I've since beat the shit out of the rifle but the gun had never been fired when I first mounted the LT104. Damage occurred on the first mounting.
As for context:
>order 6920 into LGS
>also order LT104 and Burris scope through LGS
>they arrive within a day of each other so have LGS mount and boresight scope (free service with purchase so why not)
>LGS warned me about Larue mounts and how this was a possibility (apparently not all of their mounts do it and it may/may not be a manufacturer defect)
>it does it, I was present when it happened, it was *not* the gunsmith's fault as I personally watched him close the lever with almost no effort with his index finger only
>we never did figure out what caused the gouges in the top of the rail as the bottom of the LT104 felt smooth
>try to return LT104 to Larue with explanation and pictures, only asking for a non-defective replacement
>they demand I ship it back on my dime for "refurbishment" instead of replacement or refund and are quite terse if not blatantly rude about it on phone
>get nowhere with 3 tries, eventually give up figuring I could sell it on barfcom and more or less break even, forget about it in parts bin until I get an even more fucked up upper in a trade that I don't care about and use it to build a poorfag-special .300blk
>>30292412
As for what it actually did:
>crushed the rail in, side to side, about 0.004" (four thousandths)
>turned up a ledge on both the front and back edges of 3 of the rail peaks
>took 2 gouges out of the top flats of those 3 rail peaks
>bulged the front-back sides of the rail peaks into the rail slots to where no other recoil lug or crossbar fits in them
So basically it fucked up the rail in all 3 possible dimensions.
>>30292498
I know, spam filter wouldn't let me do six so I had to reduce your shame by one.
Is skeletor canadian?
>>30292506
>>30292534
sounds to me like LGS fucked you over and are trying to pass it off as a larue defect but that's just my distrust of most gunfolk as they're not the brightest bunch it seems. down here anyway, not sure where you live...
I don't trust anyone dude. seriously.
i'm not saying larue is perfect or anything even remotely like that. when you introduce 'other fuckers' into the equation everything goes out the window. i've seen so many hamfisted retards who call themselves 'gunsmiths' do really stupid shit.
>So basically it fucked up the rail in all 3 possible dimensions.
man.... if it's really the mount's fault, that sucks dick but I really don't see how their mount can do that? it seems impossible. the slope pushes upward when you twist the lever doesn't it?
>>30292583
yes
>>30292633
k just wanted to know if my assumption about the 5rd meme was right, really like your rifle and rig tbqh.
>>30292534
man the more i look at your pictures and think about it, i seriously dont think the mount did it
im gonna have to go fool with a larue mount and see how it could possibly do that.
that shit sucks though man, sorry your colt got rekt. i'd be beyond infuriated.
get yourself a replacement dude: http://www.specializedarmament.com/products/Upper_Receiver_Colt_M4_M4A1-362-289.html
sorry bout the price tho..... but at least it will still be a colt brand colt.
that wavy rail is no bueno for optics tubes, it's useless imo.
>>30292614
This is a gunsmith I trust. He's done work for me and several acquaintances before, he's school-trained with lots of experience, and is trusted by several high-end competition shooters in the area.
The shop also has an extremely good reputation and I've been a regular there for years. I can say with 100% certainty it was not the gunsmith's fault and I was present when both the rifle and the mount were first unboxed so I know they didn't pull a switch on me with the mount.
>>30292673
I don't see how it could be anything but. There's several archived threads on just about every other gun forum with nearly identical damage and people claiming a Larue mount (either LT104 or LT107) did it.
There was even one on barfcom where one of their "trusted industry smiths" articulated with diagrams how retarded their mounting system is that Mark Larue personally got involved in and flamed it into oblivion with profanity, personal attacks, and threats of lawsuits.
>>30290845
race war
>>30292695
I'm sure you feel safe with them but I don't trust anyone. I don't care how many people rely on them.
Unless you were there the ENTIRE time and it was never left with them (opened box) I can't personally rule out they didn't do something to it or swap out one they fucked up and replaced or something shitty like that.
>>30292724
I've seen other threads (Burt) complaining about the mounts scratching/marking the anodizing but never have I seen anyone complaining about deformation of the rails themselves. Not saying you're lying, just I haven't seen it.
>There was even one on barfcom where one of their "trusted industry smiths" articulated with diagrams how retarded their mounting system is
I'd like to see that, might have to search for that unless you're up to finding it... Not a big deal if you aren't, you've already posted a bunch of shit (pics and whatnot).
I'm wary of Larue mounts now because of this discourse though. What would you get as an alternative? Like I said, a 1-4x is in my future at some point... Most mounts dont have that larue aesthetic and turn me off one way or another. ADM's are pretty cool looking though...
>>30292754
i like your pupper and your M4gery
>>30292770
I'd go with an ADM currently. I know they're slightly heavier, but that's because they use a non-retarded locking system.
I really really want Aero to make a QD version of their ultralight mount. Good QD scope mounts are pretty fucking scarce.
>>30292871
Bobro
>>30292770
I was there the entire time the LT104 was out of its sealed box.
They did open the rifle box to check it in (as required by law) outside of my presence, but I inspected it before signing for it and it was undamaged.
>>30292754
Is 16 inch with 1:7 twist and heavier rounds good for racewar?
>>30292883
>240 doll hairs
I suppose if I had something like a Razor HD or a Nightforce, but that's both almost twice as expensive as an ADM and an ounce heavier for the similar style.
>>30292869
Thanks. They're cuties
>>30292939
Anything is good for race war
>>30292871
>Good QD scope mounts are pretty fucking scarce.
i've noticed. i've never given much thought about other QD's because i always told myself i'd get a larue. didn't have to do any research.
i guess i'm looking for the lightest QD. thanks for the reasonable convo. ur p cool anon.
>>30292889
>They did open the rifle box to check it in (as required by law) outside of my presence
that's bullshit, they are not required to do that.
I had a shady FFL tell me that bullshit. I never went back to his dumb ass again. It took him 45 minutes to find my shotgun and transfer it to me because he didn't know where it was. When I finally did get it, he had opened the box claiming it was law.
I later asked my new FFL if that was true when I was picking up a pistol and noticed they hadn't even opened it yet. He said it's horseshit.
>>30292939
that's pretty much what most of us have breh.
carbine lovers anyway. i'm fixing to delve into loading my own 77grainers... shit costs too damn much to buy complete
>>30292944
Bobro mounts magically adjust their grabbing tension for whatever rail they're on without the need for user intervention. Very convenient!
>>30292989
FFL here.
It's common practice to verify the serial number on the firearm instead of the one on the box.
Manufacturers have fucked that up more than once, but the FFL is the one legally responsible if they transfer the firearm and record a serial number that's anything but the one on the receiver.
Moreover, if the serial on the gun DOESNT match what's on the box you *are* legally required to notify the shipper (usually a distributor), who's legally required to take it back and return it to the manufacturer.
As to whether it's actually required to do so I'm not sure, but that's what our ATF agent informed us as "best practice" and it makes sense.
I want to do a new build from scratch. Is buying a stripped lower with a "tensioning screw" the way to go? I noticed spike's tactical doesn't use them and all the LGS's carry spike's. I've seen some custom build AR's that had daylight coming through between the upper and lower and rattled like crazy. I know the barrel is attached to the upper and all that but I think it would drive be me crazy if I ended up with a rifle that wobbled.
>>30292170
Eat shit you fucking cuck, I was the one who posted the the tweet from fat fuck to begin with.
>>30291114
What hg you retarded faggot
>>30293027
It's user preference.
I've found that generally you have to have the tensioning screw so tight in order to actually eliminate upper/lower slop that it's a real pain in the ass to take the gun down, and generally either don't have them tight enough to fully eliminate slop, or don't use them at all.
God damnit I need a life
So what is /arg/ doing this Wednesday night
>>30293058
This
>>30293058
Jacking it and wondering whether I'll be in bed before 1am
>>30293036
Are you illiterate? It's literally stamped on the rail.
>>30290845
nothing in particular. just general purpose rifle and some hunting.
>>30293050
Hmmm...I would rather buy a hand matched set but no one seems to sell them that way.
>>30293086
What barrel?
>>30293058
This is the pinnacle of my night so far
>>30293018
yeah but if you're not a faggot you won't do that until the person is there. there is NO reason to open the box until the person shows up unless he says he's gonna be on vacation or some shit.
You can discover if the serial #'s dont match with the customer present right?
>>30293065
Is your entire life one big wank stain?

I'm happy enough with the accuracy. I need practice though. only have 60 or so rounds through it so far. looks like it will be a keeper.
Okay I do not understand why some of you guys have expensive ass hand guards. Do you just have cash to burn or is there a method to your madness like free blowjobs for life if it fucks up?
>>30293269
>what are preferences
>>30293269
What do you consider expensive ass?
I can see spending a couple hundred bucks on a quality free float rail.
don't want some bulky shitty shapes piece of ship made of potmetal
>>30290755
I just ordered a LaRue mount for my MRO (not the cantilevered one).
Is it going to destroy my Colt upper?
Did I fall for a meme?
>>30293250
the barrel is naturally free floating on g3 pattern rifles
does this excite you witcher anon?
>>30293294
Of course.
>>30293269
What do you consider "expensive ass" handguards? Because almost all of the ones in /arg/ are $200 or less, and those that aren't are on mk18 clones.
>>30291114
What upper did you get? I'm building off the same lower. I went with Noveske's M4 upper.
>>30293290
Maybe.
Yes.

You got it?

Dork the full metal jacket would tumble, and deform, more of a wounding bullet, soldier that got hit, medic, driver to helio, medic on helio, nurses and Drs, xray personal, antheslogist. Now you have a bunch of people for one bullet.
I just need a sling and maybe a hand stop or afg. What do you guys think of it besides the poorfag optic? I really like the trs-25 for the price.

Yeah. Rit color is Cocoa.

Yes. Did it with an angle grinder with a cutting wheel and a grinding wheel.
Got a Fortis rail that clamps to the GI barrel nut.

People make fun of it, but it works well.
i want snow again ;-;
>>30291983
That's my issue, all of the dam gas blocks that are adjustable are getting bought up and same for the BCGs.
I'm trying to not spend a futon on a BCG and just go with a nickel phosphor bolt but I may end up having to go more spendy.
Also why the fuck are buffer assembly kits so damn expensive?
>>30293233
Thank (You)
kys too bb
