Can someone eduma/k/ate me on Missile Boats?

I mean what are they for? They seem to be nothing better than torpedo boats in an age of naval air arms and long range naval weaponry, but countries like China, the Scandis, and Australia still build them,
>>
Because unlike torpedo boats, they don't have to close within 1500 meters to fire accurately?

but they do have to be able to sit on a stable bearing for a while to launch. and cant launch easily in high sea states.

Missile boats like the Buyan-M (inb4 Corvette, Russia classifies them as MRK (Maлый paкeтный кopaбль - small missile ship)) fire missiles that are located by another ship or locator. They can be ship based coastal defense. A fishing boat can spot a target and feed the location, the missile boat fires a missile towards the location, if it's a Kalibr, it will pop up around 20 km from the target and actively scan (50km range, same as Uran) or if it is Oniks (I dunno). But the main point is it just carries shit and other ships can do other stuff for them.
>>
>>30282123
Littoral defence. They can't do much and has short endurance but they can be used at natural chokepoints as well as guarding strategic installations

Which is why you only use it in coastal waters. Type 022 is definitely green waters only. They also have a new larger corvette for green/blue waters, can't remember the name at that time. But, once they emptied their missiles how long before they are in port, rearmed and ready to go back. While your fleet that has to cross the Pacific is 12 air defense missiles shorter (i believe ESSM is expected 70% succes in the antiship role, for the sake of the argument let's assume that's the global success of all missiles used) and can't replenish as easily. Even if it won't kill you, coastal defense ships will grind your logistical resources.

They are cheap. They have sensors than can easily be replaced. They are small and does not take much to maintain. They have a complement that is easier to train because of the simplicity of the equipments. In times of war. A lot of shipyards can build a lot of boats in a small amount of time. They can be used to defend structures like the South China Sea islands and one can easily take over another ship's job if needed. No downtime.

they're for Navies that can't afford a fleet of these but still want to throw a bunch of missiles at things
>>
Seems kinda pointless to me. Those missile boats are worthless outside of the littoral. Might as well just build fixed coastal defenses if they're that close to shore.

>fixed coastal defense
Ok

I know a sailor who's served on the USSOhio and the way he describes the SSGN conversions in action is best described as "Macross Missile Spam." China is so fucked if they start shit in the SCS.
>>
>>30284427
But anon, tiny armed boats are so much cooler. Haven't you ever watched/read Black Lagoon?

There I fixed it. Missile boats still useless.
>>
>>30285822
Fixed fortifications have been obsolete since the second world war, and will remain so unless and until we develop force fields that can shrug off a hydrogen bomb. Missile boats are easier to hide and more flexible.

Is that an AK630 CIWS on the Forecastle?
>>
>>30282123
On a side note, does camo for ships/boats and aircraft actually work?
>>
>>30282386
maybe the chink ones. but scandi boats can fire whenever the fuck they want. the nsm missile just got upgrades so it can be used as generic cruise missile too. cant fire torpedoes on land targets.
kongsberg/raytheon are working on giving the missile torpedotube launch capability too

Well, stable bearing is not that bad, since the RCS for these boats is the lowest from the front.

Also, AShMs always can turn towards the bearing of their targets. Or else, mounting launch-tubes sideways would make no sense on the other ships.

About that logistics issue; Chinese are planning some MLP-like platform as mother-ships for the 022s.

Semi submersibles are great tools.

Self propelled floating docks for high-sea maintenance as well.
>>
>>30286126
That's fucking brilliant, shortening even further the replenishment loop and making it all that harder to find and destroy.
>>
>>30286186
Fukcing Homeworld like shit.

>China's first self-propelled floating dock Huachuan I began its inaugural sailing recently, which opens a new era. With it, large ships can be repaired at sea instead of only on the shore. It can meet repair demand of all Chinese main battle ships except aircraft carrier. (81.cn/Photo)
