African troops (talking for us French here) didn't have a bad reputation with officers or regular joes. They were good lads, lost in a foreign land, still happy to serve and do a good job for their pay.
But yeah, they were a drop in the bucket. The war first and foremost decimated the farmers, craftsmen, little shop owners that made up the hard working part of the French population. it wouldn't make sense to use massively use Africans as cannon fodder when you have to carry them all the way from the bush across the sea, but also train them since they were never conscripted.
They were the troops stationed in occupied Germany after the war because they were more or less all that was left. Which made Germans extremely butthurt.
