Strategic bombing excels at destroying factories, power plants, and other critical infrastructure. If your enemy doesn't rely on industrial infrastructure, as neither North Viet Nam nor ISIS do, then it's a pointless waste that just makes you look bad.

The guy who shot up the nightclub pledged loyalty to ISIL minutes before it happened, this wasn't a 15+ cell like in France, better to present him as a lone nutter, than an ISIL deep cover agent.
Secondly the US is already bombing ISIL to fuck, and much better than the Russians at that. The 4 main areas the Coalition is bombing ISIL in, Manbij, Fallujah, Mosul and Raqqa are surrounded by proxies who have entered most of those cities, and are fighting around civilians in urban battles, meaning fewer sorties are probably going to be flown.
Apart from ISIL oil fields there's not many areas the US can carpet bomb, not without becoming the Russians and pretending every Rebel, civilian ect group that gets hit is "ISIL".
If there is going to be an escalation it will likely be in terms of special forces on the ground or weapons for the SDF. Or possible asking the non US-UK-French air forces to start taking the air war seriously.

The issue with the US airstrikes is that they're really not publicized. So even when they are frequently conducted, people hear very little and end up thinking they're not happening.
I understand the need for OpSec, just making a point that I hear/see more about Russian airstrikes than American ones.
