It's really great at humanizing the pirates and giving an insight into their society beyond the stereotypes. I think the author may have gotten a bit to close to his material in terms of idealizing their society and downplaying the bad shit, but overall it's really the only book I've read which tackles pirates as people.
>>
>>30251037
Well put, I havn't read it in long time. Probably time to bust it out again. I wish they would delve in the bad shit more.

I can recommend 2 small/medium packs

The smaller one is a Black Diamond Bullet - my main daypack. I think it's just under 20L capacity, accepts a hydration bladder, and is incredibly comfortable and durable all around (mine has held up for the past 8+ years without any notable wear, and the YKK zippers are invincible)

Other pack I can recommend that expands to 42L - Spec Ops brand THE pack. It's even more robust and compresses nicely, though molle isn't really greyman approved

I'm too old to act like a tough guy. I'm all about quality of life. The pillow weighs almost nothing and packs easily. The flip flops are actually a great piece of kit for foot health, because the more you wear them at camp the more both your feet and your boots get time to air out. The coffee cup allows for actually drinking instant coffee in MREs.

>>30252735
Those tri-zips are da shit for mission packs. The way they open allows for accessing specific things so easily.

I'll have to snag one eventually to be my daypack. I currently just use an old Hydrastorm pack for day long walks.

98 pounds? Damn anon, how do you maneuver with that plus water?

I carry 600 [300 with the spare barrels, 300 in an assault pack], my gunner carries 400, and my AB carries another 600. Plus a 100 here and there in the squad.
>>
>>30252708
You're right bud. Clearly we've all forgotten what your enlightened intelligence has not, that the proper way to backpack is to use the backpack as a sled and push with our feet across the terrain, this leaving a wool blanket to be ill suited for being carried outside. I tip my fedora to you, gentle sir.
>>
>>30250829
No dude, the wool blanket is on the bottom or your pack, with zero/debris water protection. If you set it down it'll pick up shit. If it gets wet it'll weigh 20lbs and take forever to dry unless you start a fire to dry it because it's wool.

There's nothing wrong with using one or having it on your pack, but it's certainly possible to do it wrong

>>
>>30253051

everyones a critic. I pretty much always hike with my blanket on the outside of the pack, if I stop for a short while I just rest the pack on my foot, if for a long while I usually end up sitting on the blanket anyways. wool doesnt really soak up water like you think it does. I hear your point and maybe I'll toss it in a ditty sack I carry but I've yet to have an issue with it simply strapped to the outside.

Long distance running in kit is a bad idea. I know a lot of people do it as a young guy moto game, but really, it doesn't do much positive for you.

No matter how motivated you are, you will not stop your knees, shins, and backs from getting blown out. Making long distance impact exercise with kit part of your routine is a recipe for long term residual pain.

Low impact like ruckmarching isn't too terrible, so long as you keep it to a low impact sustained walking pace. (and really learning to *walk* efficiently is an undervalued skill anyway).

If you truly think you must exercise with kit on, try things like pullups, bleacher exercises, and *short* duration explosive sprints.

In terms of building leg and core strength, it is much more efficient (most people ignorant the efficient part, so I'll restate for emphasis that weight lifting gives faster gains) and safe to do exercises in the gym than it is to try and turn running into a weight exercise.

If you in a combat situation need to run in gear, you should be physically conditioned from proper exercises to manage. But it's like shooting without earpro on- in combat, you do what you have to do, but if you do it in training you are only hurting your body.

/rant

>inb4 "lol weak babby"

I've seen too many moto people get fucked for life but being tough when they didn't have to be.

Bivvy, pad, and bag are lightest. Hammocks need trees but dont need a clear spot and are great in warm whether but lower than mid 50s you end up needing insulation other than a sleeping bag. Tents are harder to pack and need a clear footprint but are comfier.

If you try hammock camping in cool temps without an under/over quilt, you are gonna have a bad time.

Shit sucked.

I ended up buying a SOL bivvy and reactor bag liner in case nature decides to say fuck your week of backpacking.

In my pack in pic related I have a change of clothes, food, TP, paracord, duct tape, extra water, extra medical supplies, and extra ammo. I have a larger High Sierra hiking pack that I keep my tent, sleeping bag, and other long term survival gear in. It's what I take camping and hiking. I took it out and was able to easily survive 3 days with it with just shit I had without issue. I actually ended up over packing which lead to the 12 mile hike to the camp site a bitch since I had way too much shit with me for only 3 days. The good news is I'd be confident I could survive with that stuff for more than 3 days.

I like ya mostly, so I hope I'm not misreading you here. I am against running for distance in kit. Very much so.

>but when have you sprinted more than a half mile in a firefight?

Actually it happened a number of times, while I was carrying a ruck no less. But the point of my earlier post was that sprinting with all that weight wrecks the body. Of course in combat, shit happens, but in physical training routines there is no reason to run for distance with a ruck or kit. It is both safer and *gives better results* to instead do proper, safe physical training to condition the body for when it comes time to be forced to run with weight.

Hey /gq/, first time poster here, with a really stupid question.

I have an antique surplus harness similar to the one pictured here, and I love the simplicity and function of the belted harness with two pouches - with a spare in the back.

Barring it's effectiveness in a real-life situation, or even it's decidedly outdated design, is there any way to reproduce a "modern" equivalent to this?

Would it be a battle belt with suspenders? Is there something even similar to that?

What are some options?

I made it (got my sister to sew it up for me) and for lighter hot weather I can do just the liner or for colder I can do another fleece or bring a blanket in with me etc etc. It works really fucking well.

half a days worth of salt if you are just sitting at home maybe.

if your innawoods doing more than just floundering around a campsite then your going to need salt to keep your sodium levels up from all the sweat.

no that is not a milsurp pack. That pack in the picture was made by hand. Its called a roll up or roll top backpack. Its just a rectangle shaped sack. like imagine a brick with cloth form fitting to its shape then remove the cloth and roll the open top up like its a lunch bag or something then add straps to keep it tight and shoulder straps.

pic related is a Serb pack you are talking about. It's fucking tiny. I use it to carry two one liter bottles of water, my jacket, and a couple granola bars and it is completely full.
i was able to put a order of chicken wings in there and use the fold out pouch to carry my water bottles tho, I bought it for a small cheap bushcraft kit. I'm gonna just put really small stuff in it and see how it goes.

i would love to make a roll top backpack like that other image tho. it looks comfy and aesthetic.

Those it'll do. One consideration is that a velcro type cummerbund, especially with a front flap, is not going to be as fast to throw on as one that has tubes or fastex clips. If you want fast don/doff and don't intend on running any side armor, then I would look into the AT Armor Contingency PC or a similar design. Or you could try the First Spear Tubes retrofit cummerbund on the AWS.

Raisins and peanuts are bad guys, you need organic, non-gmo, artisan, cruelty-free, free range, activated almonds and antixodiant rich blueberries

I'm in Columbia right now, so basically nothing except the usual tourist items.

on a side note, after noticing that whole fiasco with Team Wendy hosting that murderous hag hillary, I'll be looking to upgrade the helmet liner on my ACH when I get back.
