Alien Space Bats send you back in time to May 1967 and drop you into the rebel Republic of Biafra, where you are required to aid them in their war of independence from Nigeria.

What do you do?

Douglas A/B-26 Invader
Biafran Invaders

In May 1967 the Eastern Region of Nigeria seceded from the Federation and proclaimed itself the Republic of Biafra with Colonel Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu as its head of state. For the next thirty three months a bloody civil war ensued which, it is estimated, cost the lives of two million people.

Whilst much of the conflict took place on the ground both sides mounted air offensives although such events did little to change the course of the war. The Federal Nigerian Air Force was comparatively well equipped with combat aircraft including several MiG-17 fighters, some L-29 jet trainers and six Ilyushin Il-28 jet bombers, all flown by mercenary crews.

For Biafra however, the situation was different. Isolated both geographically and politically she was unable to obtain aircraft by conventional means and had to rely on the often shady world of the arms dealer and, as a result, came to operate a somewhat motley collection of aircraft. Her two A-26 Invaders were perhaps the most interesting. The stories of how they were obtained almost make a thriller novel!

gonna be honest Biafra sounds pretty based

the major reason they lost this war appears to have been that the Nigerians just straight up starved them out until they got tired of watching their children die and surrendered

establishing a way to get food into the country would be a priority, as would maintaining control of the oil production. The latter could probably lead to the former

This is interesting. /k/, let's fucking talk about this shit.

Perfidious Albion helped (heavily Muslim) Nigeria put down the rebellion in oil rich (heavily Christian) Biafra.

I tried getting a what-if going in another forum where the fellow rebellious and formerly British colony of Rhodesia, forms an alliance with Biafra and they both end up winning.

The Biafrans managed to set up a small yet effective air force. The BAF commanders were Chude Sokey and later Godwin Ezeilo, who had trained with the Royal Canadian Air Force.[24] Early inventory included two B-25 Mitchells, one B-26 Invader (piloted by Polish WWII ace Jan Zumbach, known also as John Brown), a converted DC-3 and one Dove. In 1968 the Swedish pilot Carl Gustaf von Rosen suggested the MiniCOIN project to General Ojukwu. By the spring of 1969, Biafra had assembled five MFI-9Bs in Gabon, calling them "Biafra Babies". They were coloured green, were able to carry six 68 mm anti-armour rockets under each wing and had simple sights. The six aeroplanes were flown by three Swedish pilots and three Biafran pilots. In September 1969, Biafra acquired four ex-Armee de l'Air North American T-6Gs, which were flown to Biafra the following month, with another aircraft lost on the ferry flight. These aircraft flew missions until January 1970 and were flown by Portuguese ex-military pilots.[24]

Both Biafra and Rhodesia are English speaking, Christian, formerly British colonies but I'll admit I'm not hip to any particular Biafran ideology, beyond seeking a predominantly Igbo state and being anti-Muslim, anti-British and anti-Communist.

Biafra was something of a cause celebre at the time, (John Lennon would return his OBE medal over Brit support for Nigeria and apparently there was a benefit concert held in NYC which included Jimi Hendrix) yet got very little actual help from anybody and I suspect would take whatever support it could get, regardless of the politics.

For Rhodesia, Biafra's oil would be of benefit but mostly I was thinking they would spin it as something of an "Alliance of Little African Countries" and a way to side-track complaints over their white minority rule policy.

Maybe Eritrea can be brought on board, as they were (from 1961) duking it out with Ethiopia?

There's that, but the Biafrans did get some help from a handful of Europeans mercenaries and the Nigerians were pretty incompetent, so a few Rhodesian instructors and weapons, might change the tide?

Maybe as part of the propaganda campaign, there's a drive to recruit Black-American veterans of the Vietnam War ("Save Mother Africa!")?
>>
>>30244725
Well, how did they get them?
>>
>>30244922
I mean just on a logistical standpoint. It'd be hard for them to physically aid one another, like Biafra trading oil to Rhodesia for food or something.

They'd have to go through bat country to get shit done.

They lacked protein - previously, they imported dried fish from Norway to keep them in protein, animal husbandry in the region wasn't anywhere near enough to keep up the demand. The Nigerians blocked Biafra from importing this, and kept it up for 9 months. The results were that the national diet in Biafra consisted of 100% starch after the few pigs and hens had been eaten. This resulted in the famous pictures of children suffering from Kwashiorkor.

An interesting African army is the Eritrean army. It's basically an African Volkssturm numbering 570 000 soldiers according to Wikipedia, but I think it's much larger. I've heard of people as old as 80 (among the country's upper middle class) serve.

Man there really needs to be a current-Gen PC/Console game where you are basically the head of a private military contractor in control of a small African breakaway state in a war with a large neighbour.

Imagine it, you can deploy at any time as a soldier, take over mines and oil wells and resources to fund your military capability, train local forces and outfit them with whatever gear and camo you can afford, send them on missions which you can join in on as either a standard soldier and fight it out battlefield style or as a commander like those old medieval army games.

Shit would be cash.

Frankly, a totalitarian regime would be better for plenty of african countries.

Democracy has worked and produced results only when there is an honest and effective government, which means a people smart enough to elect such a government. Remember, elected governments are only as good as people who choose them.

In fact, countries like Taiwan and South Korea have only became democratic in the last 20 years, when the majority of people are educated enough to see beyond populist and scare tactics of any political parties. Even China has better governance and social order compared to India (the so-called largest democracy on earth) even though they both came from the deepest shithole and both had suffered mass famine and untold millions of death in their modern history

In Africa, we could see how strongmen like Kagame have led his Rwanda from war-torn country who have just recovered from gebocide to one of shining beacon of africa, where corruption is low (lower than other asian countries like Thailand and even Taiwan), the streets are clean and orderly, the people are taken care of and the economy not just soared (almost 8 persent growth from 2006 to 2015, with a couple hiccups in '08), but also enjoyed by the people (instead of the elite few)

I think Somalia is also going to be another african country on the rise, because their leaders know their shit (including playing Machiavelli's realpolitik), the mass destruction caused by 20 years of lawlessness actually has helped in destroying all the decrepit buildings (and they could start anew), and despite being a shithole, Somalia is actually pretty wealthy (they are net exporter of food to middle east, gulf states and even to other african countries, they have strategic port, so much so that the turks and chinks are fighing over it) and large pool of relatively-educated youth. Once al-shabab is dealt with, we would see the country taking care of itself

South Africa has an interesting military history.

The Voortrekkers whooped the shit out of the Zulus at the Battle of Blood River

The Boer Commandos managed to beat the British once, and make the second British invasion a questionable endeavor.

WWII saw some intentersing action in North and East Africa.

Then there is the Border War, and the backroom dealings with the Rhodesians and UNITA. The mixed use of military like police units, light infantry and armored units makes for a fascinating COIN and conventional warfare case study. Not to mention the Cuban involvement with the Angolans.

This is the main thing that hadn't changed.

Your average African couldn't care less who was in charge. They don't think about things that are happening next week. It's day to day, hour to hour stuff. It's why every company, aid organisation, government and international alliance that's attempted to make the place worked has failed.

>where corruption is the norm
Corruption was always the norm. It's the only way you get anything done.

South Africa was a better country in terms of its structure and efficiency when it had minority rule, but the daily life hasn't changed a bit.

In the 70's South Africa had two of the best universities in the world and on of the top medical schools, now a post '94 degree is worthless.

Yeah, people really do care who is in charge. If they didn't, the whites would still be in control of a thriving South Africa. But, the ANC is sinking the ship the whites built.

Well, relatively speaking. Zambia is doing alright for itself, but thats because they generally stayed out of everyone else's business for the past 20-30 years.

South Africa is experiencing all the growing pains of a slowly modernizing nation, IN ADDITION TO the horribly corrupt government. 2 decades of rule by the ANC has left the party and the government stagnant and decaying from the inside. Even that bleeding heart on an Archbishop, Desmond Tutu, said publicly that he can no longer support the ANC because of their complicity in violence and corruption scandals.

How did nations like Rwanda manage to pull off such successful military coups and genocides with the IQ of a man with Downs? Think about this for a minute anon. War is the greatest measure of men.

By using technology made by non-retards.

African "soldiers" (usually in literal shitholes like Mali, DRC and Burundi) were taught once, given a rifle and do fuck all with it.

Only countries with sufficient military infrastructure and organization (ethopia, kenya, ghana, etc)are able to maintain skill retention, Even bootcamp-tier skills are hard to maintain if there's no proper training facilities/credible trainers

But it's not. The US deployment to Somali had differing goals from AMISOMs ongoing mission. Furthermore, while Mogadishu is indeed stable today there's a whole lot of Somalia that isn't and Kenya still gets hit by Al-Shabaab from time to time.

Can't find the vid of this attack but it was pretty bad for the Kenyans. There were several armored vehicles that simply pulled out without stopping, and no coordination among the defenders.
>>30260218
By having leaders that didn't go full retard. Kagame is one such person. While I've seen people debate the effectiveness of authoritarian rule in 3rd world countries and how it performs vs democracy, my $.02 is that a well managed authoritarian government that is run by actual smart people can make a lot of headway in an underdeveloped nation (see LKY).
>>
>>30260675
I've read an argument somewhere that having a monarchy during early to mid-late development of a country is most beneficial. Key points were that the monarchs can be trained from birth and raised to do their job as correctly as possible, without having to deal with the obstructive bureaucracy of a democracy to slow them down. As population and standard of living increases, this slowly becomes less and less true, due to the growing divide between the wealth classes and therefore larger differences in the goals of the upper classes and the lower ones, but in the earlier stages with a relatively small population this is effective.

Which is why when the colonies first formed the US each state restricted voting rights to white, male landowners. While I could see a case being made for the race restriction being lifted (Benjamin Banneker anyone?), the idea of only landowners being able to vote makes sense.

In the Jeffersonian ideal, only a male landowner possessed the natural temperament and the economic freedom granted by owning his own land (to grow food & surplus and thus be free from the "demands" or whims of the market) was suitable to vote. It had little to do with IQ level and more to do with citizens being able to objectively weigh matters in their heads before they voted on them.

American politics was not supposed to get emotional, sensationalized, or vitriolic. It was supposed to be logical. Identity politics and muh feels are the ultimate degradation of Thomas Jefferson's legacy.

African armies? Well there was that time when African lads shot down an American helicopter because they'd invaded their country and the Americans got scared and hid in a house and asked the Pakis to come and rescue their elite troops from the untrained nig nogs and then they went home because they were scared. That was very, very funny.

Eritreans hated the British. The British basically dismantled all the Italian infrastructure and factories and sent it to their colonies in Kenya and elsewhere. I don't remember if they ever even received restitution for that.

Also remember that the Eritreans would go on to fight the Ethiopians for the next thirty years trying to win Independence, mostly because of Foreign military aid to Ethiopia (first the US, then the USSR).

Early American politics was literally all of that. Shit got crazy, guys got shot.

Seriously, mang. The Vice President shot and killed the former Secretary of the Treasury. He shot that nigga to death and didn't give a fuck.

The Burr-Hamilton had less to do with politics and more to do with Hamilton slandering Burr in the press and basically starting shit he couldn't. Burr had served with Israel Putnam and done some crazy shit in the War for Independence. Hamilton was a glorified errand boy on General Washington's staff for most of the war.

Still tho. Imagine if Joe Biden got involved in a motherfucking duel today.

It does look very similar to the Hakim/Ljungman receiver, but those guns are way longer, even had they been fitted with a PG.

I believe our associate >>30265940 is correct.
