/k/, I'm in the market for a new vehicle. I posted this on /o/ but that wasn't all that helpful. I would like for it to be /k/ related and reasonably built probably 2005 or newer, but mainly /k/ related. I have some specific needs for it. Here it goes

I am replacing my Explorer. It rolled over 200k and just fucking died. Everything just broke at once and today for the third time this week and the fifth time in its life time I have had failure to start the engine(no issue with battery or starter, had those checked.) It is time in the American way to replace this fucker.

I need a vehicle for
>snow
>mountains
>general safety
>ability to take a deer with minimal deformation or damage
>some modern comforts
I am not about to buy a new or even newer car, but I definitely need a 4x4 with some good crash safety equipment. I live in West Virginia. It snows a shit ton and sliding off the road is inevitable, I need to survive that. Hitting a deer is inevitable and I would like something built well enough to take the hit without breaking fucking everything on the front end incase I can't afford repairs right away. I am routinely on interstates and will need some acceleration and decent handling at speed. I feel a truck would be best, but am generally unsure of where to start as this will only be my second car and the first time I am in control of the buy. I am limited to 15000 max.

TL;DR I need a solid, yet modern enough for comfort truck for tough weather and daily use.

check into the nissan pathfinders. i have a 2nd gen i just bought with almost 250k miles and it is still running strong. they are very similar to 4runners in terms of reliability and off road capabilities, but way cheaper because they aren't as popular or well known.

Old Tundra or Tacoma would be your best bet. Pic related replaced my '03 Tundra, but that thing still sits out on the in-law's land, only thing fucked on it is the power steering pump is starting to give out after nearly 200k miles throughout high school and college (has completely left the ground 4 times and been mudding more times than I care to remember), and many long distance drives. The thing is fucking bomb-proof.

>>
I had an issue with it dying on idling and putting it into gear, and quickly resolved it by replacing the Throttle position sensor and gutting the throttle body and cleaning out all of the injectors. In the process of re-gasketing the the TBI, I unfortunately must have put a gasket on wrong and had a small fuel fire, but it didn't damage too much.

After that, it runs very weird. The injectors don't spray a fine mist and the truck will die if you keep one of the vacuum hoses connected to one of the air sensors.

I'm pretty stumped. Where can I go from here?
>>
>>30243550
Well you say you had a fire? Something is melted is my first guess. Hard to say without pics
>>
>>30243572
I'll have to take some, but it really isn't much that melted. I fixed the vacuum hose that was burnt, and the TPS was pretty burnt, but still works just fine. It's dark, but let me see if I can't get some decent ones.

There's still a small gas leak from the TBI that I need to fix if that helps anything
>>
>>30243589
If your throttle position sensor was burnt bad maybe, but that leak is not normal at all lol
>>
>>30243589

that would certainly helps things.

Doesn't do as well with trailers though. Plus the 3.4 gets some shitty mileage.

The grey '77 F-150 has a 351M, the Bronco has a 302 and the blue and white '68 F250 has a 390.

I haven't done much with fuel injected stuff other than routine maintenance and several engine swaps for identical engines. I do know the later 5.0 and 351W had much in common and swaps between the two are quite common. I'm sure there is a how-to out there that details what you'll need to complete the swap.
>>
>>30244018
I'm probably going to be switching to carburetor since 351W fuel injected intakes are very expensive and TBI is lame

The engine is so small that during the winter I can put the car and neutral at the top of a large hill and by the bottom of the hill the temperature gauge is almost back to cold again. I need to put a thick piece of cardboard in front of the radiator just to get any heat in the cabin from the heater.

Its not all bad. it fits in any parking space and I once drove 270 miles on $12.11.

If you ever get one, the giant Fram XG8A that usually goes on the big older Fords fits right on the tiny 1.0 and gives you almost a whole extra quart of oil capacity along with insane oil filtering capacity compared to the thimble sized stock one. I run that filter along with Rotella T6 5W-40 synthetic and it runs smooth and quiet.
>>
>>30244108
Thats what I like to hear. I need a bigger filter for my truck... I normally have magnets on mine as well.
>>
>>30244169

I put a rare earth magnet right next to my oil drain plug. When it comes time for an oil change I just take off the magnet and remove the plug. Any ferrous metal it has manged to capture will just drain out with the old oil.
>>
>>30244228
Im pretty sure my Cherokee has a magnet on the drain plug itself.. my Ford doesn't. Either way magnets I think are a great way to keep fluids clean.
>>
>>30242960
Thats not why they're cheaper m8.
>>
>>30244341

Magnetic drain plugs can be bought at just about any parts store for a few bucks. A worthwhile addition to pretty much any vehicle that might not already have one. Don't be scared when you pull it out to see some metal stuck to it. Pretty much any engine will produce a little.

Many do not know about this vehicle but it is definitely a solid vehicle.

I have a 2005 Mitsubishi Endeavor and that thing is a beast.

Extremely comfortable on the inside with plenty of cargo space (76.4 cu. ft) packed into a mid sized frame. I can pack all my camping gear, kitchen and climbing gear inside without even having to secure things on the roof.

Awd handles mud, snow, dirt like a god damn champ. The only time I've gotten stuck was because I was being a fucking retard but she'll handle most terrain you throw at her.

Decent fuel economy, I usually average 21mpg coupled with its 21.4 gallon capacity let's me drive close to 450 miles in one tank.

Handles superbly with its robust suspension yet comfortable enough to enjoy cruising with.

I got it new and since then the only stuff that has failed me are some comfort electronics but mechanically I've never had any trouble with it. Also the large engine bay makes it very easy to self service.

Honestly I don't know why the endeavors never picked up. I always get compliments on my endeavor. If Mitsubishi reintroduced the endeavor and kept true to its origins, you bet your ass I'll be buying one.

10/10 would definitely buy again

>can i learn to drive it on the way back

Nope

You'll need time to practice because you'll want to jump off the clutch when you panic because it starts jumping, but you actually want to stomp the clutch to prevent it from killing the engine

You have to learn to feel for the grey area with your foot
I originally learned on a motorcycle, so my only real challenge was getting my left leg enough finesse to let off the clutch smoothly

All vehicles are different though and you have to essentially relearn each one you hop in, but it will never be as hard as when you first started

I really wouldn't recommend learning trying to drive it home
You'll probably forget to take it out of gear coming up to a stop and rear end someone

Foreign cars have much higher maintenance costs than domestic ones
This is across the board

>b-but foreign cars are made here!!!!

Doesn't change the fact that my moms Toyota Corrola has asinine part prices
>>
>>30245678
Why in the hell are you looking to buy a manual as your first car in a vehicle that doesn't benefit from it
>>
>>30245691
What? i thought all vehicles benefited from it. what benefits and what doesn't?
>>
>>30245719
all vehicles benefit from it, but you won't really notice a difference or have any particular reason for it unless you either have A) a fast car or B) something to haul

Those vehicles are fairly slow and don't have very strong engines
Granted a weaker engine will do better towing with a manual transmission, but getting a manual in those options is more of a preference thing over a true upgrade

Get what you want, but I really think you're making a bad decision if you've never driven before and plan on going cross country

I nabbed this 2006 5.3L Z71 with 95k on the odometer for $13.8k in 2013. Leather heated seats, Bose stereo, dual climate control, flawless push button 4x4, it kicks ass in every environment except unpacked sand, but if I hit it hard enough I float through it. Only thing I've replaced in 3 years was one exhaust manifold gasket because I ran it straight piped.

It's currently at 136k and I'm about to drive it to El Paso to hike Big Bend.

Hell, they shit on the ZX2 even though it's fast, economical, tight controlling, cheap, long lasting car ONLY because the Yuro version of the Escort sucked ass and they instinctively shit on US cars

>>
>>30245726

>>
>>30245772
manuals are a much better offroading option, but I would look into something specifically for it like a truck or off roading specific SUV

I don't like foreign cars very much, especially when actual use is involved, but the Xterra is a damn nice vehicle for it and if you can find a 5 speed version, buy it immediately and sell it to me because they're unobtanium
>>
>>30245739
It's not even a good suspension package desu, aside from the skid plate. I want to swap in some new Bilsteins. But it's generally referred to as a trim package where I am over the usual LS/LT series because the Z71 has more "useful trim" than the LS/LT packages. Sorry if I was misleading.

I won't try to argue that and it's still a better upgrade for the half tons of that era than Dodge or Ford but it's still not THAT great.

I am due to replace them and I'd rather use 5100's than OEM. I did the brakes and transmission last year, suspension is next. I beat the shit out of this truck and want it to last to 200k.

Manual transmissions are much simpler. There is far less to go wrong. I will always prefer manual simply because there is like 10% as many parts in a manual compared to an automatic. And semi-automatic is just a problem waiting to happen.

I don't see a semi-automatic being reliable when it is 10 years old. I imagine it being a absolute maintenance nightmare.

No. Also I wouldn't say a manual is much simpler than an automatic, only major technical variable between the two is the gear set used. A traditional manual uses standard gears and clutches an automatic uses planetary gear sets which is why automatics are almost always only available in multiples of 2 gears (2,4,6,8,10...).

P.S. Dual clutch automatics are different than both traditional manuals and automatics.

This is pretty well true. It lets you shift in anticipation of upcoming features like curves and hills.

Varies based on the engine and drivetrain, in most cases it's a non-issue though, especially for a daily driver

Depending on the design of the transmission in question, this goes from being kinda almost true to being you're fucking smoking crack and lying out of your ass, but it's also an additional level of control that in most every situation is at best marginal, and at worse splitting your attention between further from other driving tasks that need to take place at that moment because you insisted on controlling something a computer can control faster and more accurately than you.

For stuff like daily, commuter driving manual transmission is little more than a fetish.

It is a trim package. The name "z71" is its serial identifier in their inventory control system...same for all z designations.

I don't see Ford make Rangers still.

As a Southerner who transplanted to the frozen north for work, let me say this:
You northern fucks have no clue what driving on ICE is. Compacted snow is not ice.

RWD is easy as fuck on snow and ice. Just don't jump into the gas or on the brakes as well as don't accelerate too quickly and you're good.

>Debatable on some vehicles and depends entirely on you both knowing HOW to shift for better gas mileage and actually doing it

More power transfer to the wheels means less engine usage to get the same speed
But yes, if you can't drive a manual for shit, you'll probably get the same

>Varies based on the engine and drivetrain, in most cases it's a non-issue though, especially for a daily driver

For a daily driver, no, but a car wiht an auto will objectively have a lower whp rating than a manual will

>Depending on the design of the transmission in question, this goes from being kinda almost true to being you're fucking smoking crack and lying out of your ass

You just admitted above that it entirely gives you more control
here
>It lets you shift in anticipation of upcoming features like curves and hills.

>because you insisted on controlling something a computer can control faster and more accurately than you.

Confirmed for never having driven a manual ever

I can shift faster than 99% of automatics on the road and it doesn't take any attention away from the road when you're used to it

and?
Buy an old one
Fords probably going to bring back the Ranger because it was stupid to discontinue it

They just wanted a reason to move the plant to Mexico

>>30252640
this so damn much

>RWD is easy as fuck on snow and ice

yeah no

Snow is one thing but if you have to go up a hill and need to give it extra gas to prevent yourself from not making it up it, it will immediately spin out

>done it before
>inb4 YOU STOMPED THE GAS
>>
>>30252640
>you get snow but you don't get ice, they're too entirely separate entities and only occur on road surfaces below the mason Dixon line

Ford mechanic here.

Rangers were mediocre for most of their production run. 4.0L 4x4s in the late '90s-mid '00s are the only decent ones, and even they had shit transmissions. I'd go for a Tacoma any day over a Ranger. However, Toyota's 1/4 ton trucks had some model years that were real stinkers too, like some in the T100 era.

Literally no vehicle is fully made in America. Supply pipelines are global and I'm not being some jerkoff twisting words around because "muh iron ore was mined in ironmineistan". Significant components of *every* vehicle come from overseas. A Tacoma or Tundra is literally just as "American" as a Ranger or F150.

>>not buying a ford
Fuck Detroit. Almost my entire life they've pumped out shitty, disposable vehicles all while jacking up the price. Should have let all of them fucking crumble.

>You just admitted above that it entirely gives you more control

You're aware that most vehicles with automatic transmissions let you still select your maximum gear, right?

Congrats on missing the point

not even that guy

Yep...

My family has owned 3 rangers
One being from the 80s, the second being late 90s and the last being a 2004

They all ran great
Same goes for my 2 friends who own newer Rangers as well

I've never heard of these transmission problems before
Can you elaborate?
