What happened to the armored car concept? Why are our military cars today so flimsily protected at a time when they need protection from small arms fire more than ever?
>>
>>30242005
The increasing prevalence of RPGs and roadside bombs.

Armor below that of a tank isn't going to meaningfully increase survivability, but it will decrease speed and carrying capacity.

Hell, even fucking Humvees are up-armored nowadays.
>>
>>30242048
This is more akin to a WW2 halftrack. An armored car would be smaller, more maneuverable, and geared toward offense.
>>
>>30242066
armored and uparmored hmmwvs suck major ass though.

if they hit an IED the armor falls off and the explosion still gets inside.

WWII armored cars couldn't protect against explosions either. Their armor was only good against small arms. Maybe grenades, but certainly not something like a roadside bomb.

Halftracks were usually garbage. Instead of getting the best of both worlds (good road speed and good rough terrain handling), you instead got the worst of both.

Also armored cars have been around since forever. They just don't look like the ones used in a decades old war for obvious reasons.

Yes.

Listen m8, it's impossible to get 100% against IEDs.

An IED can be as powerful as you want it to be. You step up the protection, they step up the payload. These aren't mass produced small arms designed to be carried by women. As soon as they discover your "protection" stops their usual design, they just make it bigger.

500 pound bombs have been used as IEDs. There is no real defence against them. All you can hope is the other vehicles might have enough to withstand the blast further away. Armoured vehicles whether APC, IFV or AFV must still do their jobs which is not being a tank since tanks do it better.

What does /k/ think of the Hawkei?

It looks like it's basically going to become the gold standard for PMVs.
Made by Thales Australia, the same guys who make the Bushmaster.
>>
>>30242188
>It's impossible to get 100% against IEDs
The Bushmaster has a 100% survival record, even after a dozen or so have been blown up by IEDs.
The MRAP's probably got a similar record, too.

Just because Humvees are shit doesn't mean that everything is.

>What happened to the armored car concept?

As reconnaissance vehicles? The role has been basically eclipsed by the usage of drones.

As an armored patrol vehicles for counterinsurgency work in occupied territories? For the most part this role has been taken over by IFVs and APCs, although purpose-built 4x4 and 6x6 armored cars do exist and have been used to great effect in combat, like in the Border War.

>Why are our military cars today so flimsily protected at a time when they need protection from small arms fire more than ever?

Utility vehicles were never intended to be armored patrol vehicles. Iraq and Afghanistan were supposed to be "police actions" and the expense and gesture of using proper armored vehicles was seen as politically counterproductive both at home an in theater. Of course there were consequences to this, and for a time we had to scramble to uparmor humvees etc. MRAPs and other purpose-built vehicles are armored cars even if they kind of look like trucks.
>>
lav and stryker are basically modern day armored car.

and stuff like the m3 bradley is basically armored car on steroid.

I wonder how it compares to the LATV

they were never designed with mine resistance in mind which is why people made mraps and the like from scratch
it would be like attaching a rocket motor to arrows in an effort to make them reach farther like a gun could

>>30245648
humvee were utility vehicle. their initial job was just transportation.

using MRAP for everything is just impractical.
>>
>>30245732
They could have still put some basic mine protection in.

Loads of other vehicles around the same weight have sloped undersides.
>>
>>30242123

Halftracks were a shitty compromise back when people didn't know how to build things.
>>
>>30245738
>They could have still put some basic mine protection in.

It's easier to simply design and build a different vehicle, which is what we did. That's why the MRAP exists.

There is a limit to how much shit you can tack onto a design before it's easier to just build something entirely new.

The humvee was designed to carry people and things around while not getting shot at. When you start trying to modify it to absorb mines and RPG's, it gets really shitty really fast.
>>
>>30244304
Why ?
>>30245716
Kek. They're practicing and demonstrating in a simulated african environment.
>>30245732
Do the current MRAPs have the same ballistic protection as the WW1 landships ?

>>
>>30242005

Because RPG's and other Cheap AT weapons are fucking everywhere and would make short work of WW2 style tanks and armored cars

The CAF is getting a new armoured car, the TAPV. It'll be going to our armoured units to serve as armoured recce, because our Coyotes are old as shit and don't do cross country very well. The TAPV had some shitty performance issues, they were sent back to get fixed. Supposed to arrive soon™. They're going to have an auto 40mm grenade launcher and/or a C6 GPMG.
