I strip the rifle down and assemble only the lower, upper and handguard after filling in the important bits so they don't get painted (forward assist hole, ejection port, etc.) Then I painted the whole thing OD green, then I cut shapes out of masking tape and put them on the rifle, these areas would stay OD. then I painted a second coat, cut shapes and tape, paint, etc. til all colors are applied.
