Time to finally pull the plug, eh?
>>
By (((Sydney J. Freedberg Jr.)))

>>30232986
for fucks sake mikhail we get it you hate america go drink some cologne or something
>>
I think they already pulled the plug when they decided to cut the orders and explore a proper frigate replacement
>>
>>30232986
Oi faget. Read the conclusion, da?

>While Navy shipbuilding has done well in the budget battles of the last few years, it remains under intense fiscal pressure. Meanwhile, the fleet is under intense strategic pressure to cover a wide range of deployments worldwide, keeping up a pace so intense that it’s wearing out ships and crews alike. The only way to get more ships at sea without a lot more money is to buy cheap ships — which is why the Navy is sticking with modestly upgraded models of LCS.
>>
>>30232986
>the LCS doesn't have enough firepower to be useful

Funny how the article does not say that.

>>30233002
>plan to build 34 more ships on top of the 6 that exist

full retard

>>plan to build 34 more ships on top of the 6 that exist

Is this 2011?
>>
>>30234653
It's down to 40 from 52. 40-6=34.

>The only way to get more ships at sea without a lot more money is to buy cheap ships
>$562.8 million EACH
>>
>>30236664

For a ship of that size, that's not expensive at all.
>>
>>30236664
>he thinks that is expensive

So is there a ship based equivalent to the retards who think all we need are upgraded pattons for tanks and gun only f16's for fighters, and anything more advanced than that is wasting money?
>>
>>30236664
562.8 million each because it has the thinnest armor in the fleet. Not to mention a lot of the material used on the ship actually came from China and Canada c:
>>
So aside from all the arguements, what is the "full" loadout of an LCS, Freedom or Independance? I know of the "few guns and a RAM" thing for general patrol, but what is it they're even intended to have?

Genuine curiosity.
>>
>>30232986
If they haven't pulled the plug on the F35 why would they on the LCS?
>>
>>30237677
Because the LCS is in a far worse state than the F-35 and isn't nearly on the same scale?
>>
The media doesn't understand distributed lethality. It's not really about putting weapons on every ship. It's really just trying to keep up ship counts with a reduced budget and expensive American shipyards. Weapons can be added later once the budget increases; additional hulls take years of effort.

Of course, the modules are a shitshow and probably won't be fixed anytime soon.
>>
>>30237668
1 57mm gun
2 30mm guns
1 RIM-116 launcher
8 Harpoon or NSM in quad packs
24 VLS Hellfires
2 SeaHawks

The AShM are new, being added this year.

>>30237722
Setting aside that both are in a goid state.
>>
>>30237945

So 21x SAMs with a 9km range. I had been hoping they'd at least get some ESSM or CAMM or something. I guess it's not BAD in that regard.

Nice to hear about the surface warfare stuff though, thats more than I'd thought. The 24 Hellfires is interesting for countering boat swarms.

Do they have towed sonars for ASW? I guess the intent is to use the helos exclusively for it, which makes sense.

It kinda sounds like they sit somewhere between OPVs and full frigates. That's not a bad niche given the US has no shortage of larger escorts.
>>
>>30238313
>Do they have towed sonars for ASW?

Yes.
>>
>>30238313
>It kinda sounds like they sit somewhere between OPVs and full frigates. That's not a bad niche given the US has no shortage of larger escorts.

The niche is fine. Its probably the price most people are concerned with.
>>
>>30238508
It has a low price for what it is.

American military contractors are a joke, they need to be replaced by totally new companies
Elon Musk has shown what a joke the rocket industry is, you can bet its damn similar throughout the rest of the defense industry, rampant overspending, technology & techniques stuck decades in the past, never improving anything without being explicitly told to & paid to....

They still build ships essentially by hand
Using fat, overpaid union labor

Of course the other side of it is congress spreading everything out through 1000 contractors in various districts. THEY certainly don't give a shit about overspending either.
>>
>>30232986
Those things made of concrete? Holy fuck they look hideous.

He is lying, they cost less than that.

Iver Huitfeldt-class frigate
>$325 million each
>56 cell VLS w/ SM and ESSM
>16 cell Harpoon Block II
>2 76mm OTO
>1 35mm CIWS
>2 MU90 launchers

China particularly curbstomps the LCS' price.

Type 054A frigate
>$240 million each
>32 cell VLS
>8 cell C-803
>2 30mm CIWS
>8 240mm ASW launcher
>1 76mm PJ276
>34 tube decoy launcher

Both of these ships have far longer range, endurance and are faster in sea states 5 & 6 than the LCS variants too.
>>
>>30245020
>Iver Huitfeldt-class frigate
>$325 million each

Without radars or weaponry.

>56 cell VLS w/ SM and ESSM
>16 cell Harpoon Block II

4 positions that can mount either 4 Harpoons, 12 VLS ESSM or 8 SM-2.

>China particularly curbstomps the LCS' price.

Chinese manufacturing costs cannot be directly compared to American or European.

>Both of these ships have far longer range, endurance and are faster in sea states 5 & 6 than the LCS variants too.

Both are significantly slower than either LCS.

what
>>
>>30245232
Probably stupid question, but what are the red circles around the turrets for?
>>
>>30245897
It's the "don't stand here or you'll get hit by the turret" ring. They can move without any kind of notice, so it's for safety.
>>
>>30246024
Are they that quiet or is it that noisy out there?
>>
>>30246056
They just move fast and suddenly. Like if you're standing near it, the barrel can swing around and kill you in less than a second.
>>
>>30246062
Just how fast are these things? Anything on youtube demonstrating it?
>>
>>30246066
I don't know. It's large machinery that moves suddenly, I don't know why it's so hard to explain why you shouldn't stand next to it.
>>
>>30246066

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHqPuZs_nPk

This video shows a gatling turret trying to shoot down a Harrier during some kind of drill. The video is short, but you can see the turret move pretty fast.

China has the ability to use what is essentially slave labor to make warships.

Of course their ships are going to be cheaper.
