I have a question, I recall reading that when an F-22/F-35 fires up their radar actively, no passive radar can pick up the radiation. Is this true? Or can a passive radar detect a radiating F-22/F-35?
>>
>>30232836
That sounds like a dubious claim. Signals are signals. You can't detect something with a signal that can't be detected
>>
>>30232836
of course it can. the trick is that the radar stays on 1 frequency for a very short period of time before randomly jumping to another one. most RWRs aren't sensitive enough to detect it
>>
>>30232836
What the others said; the F-22 / F-35 can use LPI (Low Probability of Intercept) modes which reduce the chances of a passive radar / RWR identifying their emissions, but like stealth in general, it doesn't make you completely invisible.

What are the benefits/detriments of using a 1" sling vs a 1.5" sling?

All I can think of is that a 1.5" sling will weigh more since it has more material and it could possibly be too wide for some reason (or the 1" too narrow)

I'm looking at getting a rhodesian sling for my new GSR but can't decide between a 1" and 1.5"

thanks /k/omrades

>scope
easy as walking in the store with the money and buying it

>silencer parts
That's gonna be harder, since silencers are NFA items. Depending on what exactly you're looking for, you probably won't be able to get it
>>
>>30233069
pretty much what you covered. only other things i can think of are:
1.5" spreads weight of rifle over larger surface while you carry it
1.5" might be more secure due to larger contact patch b/w you and sling (although this probably has more to do with the material)

The LPI mode is said to be basically impossible to track with peer RWR.

This is due to two reasons.

One: its actually pretty damn good. Its been described as a pencil thin beam that only paints the target for a second to get heading and range and whatnot.

Two: russian and chinese RWRs are notoriously terrible (something supposibly fixed in the pak-fa/j-20s).
>>
Hello, I am very dumb and have never purchased a firearm online before so please bear with me.

I would love to acquire a Benelli Nova or Supernova. I would also love for it to have a 14.5 inch barrel. For some reason I'm having trouble locating any listings for a gun fitting this description, but I can find some with longer barrels. Are there some laws preventing the sale of a shotgun with a barrel that short? How would I go about getting a shorter barrel for it if I do buy one with a longer length barrel? I am in Oregon if it matters. Sorry in advance for my general ignorance.
>>
>>30233412
Another major part of it is that their AESAs spread their signal across multiple frequencies; the total amount of energy that the radar emits is the same, but the enemy radar / RWR interprets it more as noise.

That's because rather than seeing 1 peak that's (eg) 100mW, there might instead be 4 peaks that are each 25mW. If the background noise is around 25mW, then those peaks are much harder to detect; the RWR is more likely to dismiss those signals as anomalous noise.
>>
>>30233468
minimum length for shotgun barrels is 18" measured from a closed bolt's face.
you have three options, and two legal ones
1. file paperwork with the ATF that allows you to saw it down to 14.5". this will cost you $200 and a few months
2. have a gunsmith saw it down to 14.5, but permanently attach a muzzle brake/flash hider/whatever on the end to bring the length back up to 18"
3. cut it down and don't tell anyone. this could potentially cost you 10 years in prison + a gorillion dollars/get you and your dog shot.
>>
>>30233468
Shotguns with barrels shorter than 18" are considered SBSs. There are a few specific exceptions, each play on the pistol grip only, >26" OAL, non-AOW, gray area "firearm" loophole.
>>
Are molle Cummerbunds for plate carriers universal, or do I need a specific size/brand depending on my carrier?
>>
>>30233468

Short answer is you can't purchase a short barreled shotgun without filling out extra paperwork, paying extra money, and waiting for approval.

Welcome to the wonderful world of gun laws.

Imagine being in a forest at night. A bird chirps only once. You know there's a bird, but you can't see it and you only have a general direction of where it WAS when you heard it. You don't have speed, altitude, or anything else on it, just a rough azimuth.

Does that mean it's totally invisible? No. And it is definitely a con worth noting, but in reality it is unavoidable. The neat thing about the F22 however is that it's "chirping" techniques get better and better every day. It can get more info with less output. This is magnified when working in groups as well.

Signals propagate with the inverse square law. Radars, however, rely on a reflection and is therefore subjected to the above law squared once more, the more brutal r^(-4) law. That means you need to illuminate the target with a lot more than it takes to see the illumination.

>>30232865
>trick is that the radar stays on 1 frequency for a very short period
That is frequency jumping. That, and the more advanced spread spectrum technique are both decades old. Iranian RWRs might not detect this, what you need to measure against are those operated by Russia and China.

>>30233412
>Its been described as a pencil thin beam that only paints the target for a second to get heading and range and whatnot.
Basic Physics tells you there is something called divergence. A "pencil thin beam" will have a massive divergence, and the aperture must in any case be wider than the wavelength. Thus the beam is more likely as wide as the nose cone at the origin and widens by at least 0.5 degrees.

Secondly, while I worked on radar systems, you needed far less than one second to get a bearing. However you need temporally separated readings to obtain target heading and an update every second or so to feed the Kalman filter.

Thus the target will have the opportunity to sense any incoming radar illumination regularly.

>>30233512
That is well known technology and wild eyed salesman will no doubt maintain it cannot be detected. Strange then that it is not more widely used on, say, F-16 since systems like DSSS have been known for more than 50 years.

GPS relies on DSSS and is eminently readable by civilian devices. Even if you do not have the spreading codes you can still employ a lot of tricks to detect emitted energy by say using DF.

Because spent brass is often a bit out of shape when fired/ejected, so when you stuff it back into the chamber it can be snug. Like, "need to baton the action open with my mosin's bayonet" snug.

If you want to DIY snap caps, de-prime your brass and re-load it with a slug but no new powder or primer.

Question:

How do I Increase weight of my gear.
I dont own a firearm, just got out of the military and want to go innawoods for a few days.

But the gear Ive prepared only weighs 17kg, excluding the uniform, boots and molle vest.

That weight includes 7l of water, 3.5kg air rifle for small game, MREs, a roll mat, bivvy, camo netting, an axe, and an E-tool.

What else to bring, I think my pack is too light.

Also what should I do innawoods other than cook, sleep, eat. I miss the recon practices and the opfor.

Wouldn't a discerning IR detector or w/e be able to tell the temp difference in exhaust on "stealth" aircraft at great distance?

Unless the exhaust is cooled to atmospheric temp (-50c) immediately, there must be SOME signature, right?

Even then, the skin of the aircraft punching through the atmosphere heats up undoubtedly, especially at mach 1+

Given this is true, doesn't this make "stealth" obsolete? Or at least, buff up the IR detection and traditional radar "stealth" becomes obsolete, rather.

Even civilian sensors will discern a 0.1 C temperature difference so skin heating should show up.

$350 Lithgow Lee Enfield in good condition
$350 SKS of many types
