All labor is valued in a labor market and thus when high skill labor markets are saturated with workers, like many are now, the value of said labor in both salary/wage and the ability of the labor to negotiate decreases. As for Europe, it's because they were coming out of a fucking world war. The socialist parties gained traction because of the destruction and despair of the post Great War period, something that the US never experienced.
