It's to blend in around locals because a lot of the time they use civilian vehicles and dress in afghan clothing so they don't stick out, otherwise the enemy will spot them a mile off and by the time the combat team rolls up to the target, all the weapons, electronics and leaders have gone.

Beards can be a bit itchy when they're growing in, especially if you're in your teens/early 20s and the follicles are new.
I've had a full beard for about 5 years now. I play with it a lot, especially when I'm thinking, but it rarely ever itches.
The reason they have beards has been covered by most of the other posters. Great warriors throughout history, especially European history, have all rocked beards. Its a masculinity thing, simple as that.
But they aren't itchy at all, and in-fact its healthy for your face to have a beard because it allows your bodies natural oils to moisturize your face and keep air-borne particles away from your nose, not to mention it traps pheromones.

To try and stay on topic, I reside in NC where the humidity is normally above the saturation point, and I have no issues with my beard. Keep it clean and combed and you're good to go. Special Operations guys do it because they can, there's not a whole lot more to it. They're manly men, and like growing beards to signify their manliness. Shaving every day innadesert sucks, I can assure you. My bitch ass skin made it so I had to start moisturizing and exfoliating my face so I wouldn't be in constant pain from sweat getting into my razor/sunburn. I loved it when I got a chance to grow mine out while we were out on a COP in bumfuck nowhere, it was great.
