ZQI is pretty good, esp. since there isn't any dirt cheap surplus right now. I would go with that, since it's usually under $0.50/rnd.

Funny you should mention those socks.

They were actually given to me by my high-school band as part of a pep rally. The theme that the cheerleaders came up with was "sock it to stevens" or some shit, and the band wore wacky ass thigh high socks as a part of that.

For a decent FAL? Well, if you're an adventurous (read: 'impoverished') soul such as myself an are not opposed to meeting some man in a home depot parking lot to buy a gun he built in his garage...

About $1100, give or take $200.

You could always just be safe and buy a Voyager for $999. It's a good gun, it lacks a few of the features that you might want but it's still functionally a decent weapon.

However, you don't meet interesting people when you order off of AIM Surplus, whereas it's always a party when you have to call Bubba to meet you in the lot of the Walmart at I10 & 281 to buy his latest workbench creation.

There's an FN FAL from the 90s for 1,000. I'm thinking about getting it if the guy has the original handguards and maybe some more mags. What are the main things to check for damage or excessive wear on a FAL besides the barrel?
>>
>>30235893
Those are grenadier precision handguards.
Very nice stuff.
If you dont want them, I'll buy them off you if you get the rifle.
>>
>>30234768
You are on 4chan. These are the rules of the internet.
Lurk moar faggot.

Seriously go read a few fucking articles on the rifle and its design then reviews on available builds and parts. Learn who cheaped out and who stayed true to spec. What are known issues and how fixable are they if you get a lemon.
Now fuck off.
>>
>>30235684
What's the voyager missing? Was going to save up and get it and a folding stock kit. Are you just pointing out the lack of rail or scope mount? Cause if I remember you can switch that out easy, but if I'm going to save up more of its something big I can't think of right now
>>
>>30236546
On that note, how easy is switch stuff like the barrel on a FAL? Was considering doing more than the folding stock down the road, like getting a shorter barrel, rail guards or getting a carry handle some day but probably won't for years if I do

if you want an sa58 clone thta has like no chance of blowing up get a voyager 1k or a dsa sa58 for 1400

garage builds with most workable kits are sub 1100 usually cheaper on armslist they get as low as like 800 or so

>>30236546
voyager mainly is missing a good sight

>>30236563
easier than an AK harder than an ar
folding stock is a new lower p much
carry handle is buy the gun with it or you aint ever getting it deal\\
>>
>>30236761
I know the carry handle and folder bit. I'm horribly poor, so I only plan on voyager with a folder.

If I get money and to retard on buying guns I'll probably get a carry handle upper and build a tacticool FAL and put the fixed stock back on the voyager.
>>
>>30227696
OP has obviously been here for years.
>>
>>30235893
Idk really beside the barrel, maybe see if the gas tube is rusted to shit or not? Some 7.62x51 is corrosive, but people still won't clean their guns. People on FALFiles still grope about orange rifles because of crap like that.

Check the gas tube by rotating the gas plug halfway between 'A' and 'G', then the pressure from the piston and spring should just kind of force everything to pop out. Yoink and peek to your heart's content.

>>
>>30236963
I'd go for the welded top rail unless you absolutely must have it vanilla. I've heard stories about G3 scope mounts, few of them good.
>>
>>30236983
commiefornia, I think most places won't accept the rifle unless it ships Cal ready rather than the FFL fix it once it's there. And I'm not sure if the barrel is long enough to allow the folder under our length laws since its collapse/fold then measure on top of an extra few inches. Hoping to leave in a few years
Folding stock also needs a new bolt carrier, doesn't it?
>>
>>30237053
Yeah, I was planning on the 21 inch voyager since it is a simple parts swap for a folder, DSA sells kits. I think 18 is the minimum to be cal legal, but that one is currently sold out. Getting the longer one since it'll just be a rare range toy till I get money, then I'll get the folder. If I'm feeling retarded might even slap a 16 inch barrel on and hope I never run across anyone who gives a shit.
>>
>>30237054
Yeah, but you can buy those from a website.
>>
>>30237076
I could have sworn they didn't have this in the cal legal section a week ago. It even has a carry handle unlike the 18 inch.

http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/component/virtuemart/shipping-rifles/fal-sa58-standard-rifle-21-barrel-fixed-humpback-buttstock-detail.html?Itemid=0
>>
>>30237076
>I think 18 is the minimum to be cal legal

It's also the minimum length you want on a .308 if you ever plan to shoot long range with it. Any shorter and you start losing too much muzzle velocity.
>>
>>30237101
Well, I ment minimum to be able to put a folder on it. Looked it up, 30 inches overall with the stock folded, it literally has to be the 21 then since I think DSA said 18 is its 28.5 folded. Least I already wanted the 21, even if it is retarded I can't buy a 16 or 18 and throw a folding stock on it
>>
>>30237142
Well, if we're following the law you'd have to pin the stock anyway so it won't fold.
>>
>>30237170
Like I said, if it's below 30 inches when the stock folds, it's a salt weapon. So the pinned stocks are to make it so you can't reduce the length below 30. Atlantic actually offers 4 inch barrel extenders for AK's to let us filthy Commiefornians keep folding stocks on those if the folder is more important to us than the barrel being horrifyingly ugly
>>
>>30237190
Ah yes, barrel extensions, I own an AUG A3 SA(with a sixteen inch barrel though wouldn't know by looking at it)and a PS90, so I know all about ugly barrel extensions.
>>
>>30237085

People tend to say that something has character, when its just a hodge podge of whatever was on sale when they had a few bucks.

People tend to say something is cozy, when something is old and probably poorly maintained.

Still looking for an optic. Thinking about a Leupold VXR cuz I like the illuminated reticle. Friend also gets a bitchin discount because he prints t shirts for them. Anyone have any reccomendations though? I'm new to the 7.62 world, advice and criticism is welcome.

Why put a cheapo optic on a nice rifle?
If you want leupy, and you get a discount, try a Mk6.
>>
BRG I need some advice. I'm looking at getting my first FAL and I have two available near me.

The first is built on a century receiver with the unibrow ramp with a L1A1 kit with correct parts outside of the receiver, appears to be BSA from the lower receiver. The ramp looks similar to >>30241162 where ramp extends all the way.

The other is an argentine with matching numbers on the barrel and upper receiver but a mismatched lower receiver. Upper receiver is marked LSR (FAL) cal 7.62 mm (.308 win). Lower receiver is marked Industria Argentina FMAP "DM" Rosario Imp. By SAC LATTA, SC.

Both are the same price ($1200 in CA), but the l1a1 comes with an optic attached. The finish on the argentine is close to perfect from what I could remember, no scratches on the bluing. The L1a1 is in far rougher condition with the bluing fairly worn and scratched away under the safety. The rifling on the l1a1 barrel looks very good; I didn't look at the rifling on the argentine but I'd assume its excellent from the condition the rest of the gun is in.

I'm assuming the argentinian one is the better choice from what I've read about the century ones, but I like the l1a1 better personally. If I really should go with the argentinian one I guess I just need someone to tell me to stop being a bitch and go with the correct choice.
>>
>>30253516

From what I can tell, steel case Damme doesn't cause additional wear or have any significant problems. The only issue I've had with it is that it's weaker (talking about Monarch ammo), so I have to dial up the gas to '1', Rhodie style.

I'm pretty sure that the stories about rifles blowing up stems more from shitty builds than anything else. There are plenty of people who have fed their FALs thousands of rounds of Wolf and Bear without any problem.

Where I live, I can get ZQI for the same price as steel, so I just use that. If steel is the only cheap option, though, then I think your theoretical future rifle will be just fine.

build a fal its medium on difficulty and not shit
>>
>>30265227
If the G3 had a last round BHO, I could see the slap being cooler.

As it is, FALs are easier to assemble, need fewer tools, and its easier to get everything right the first time. Parts kits are rare and expensive these days. But can be had. Before you ask.

>A FAL will be easier to build
See, you say that, but....... its easier to build a higher quality G3/HK91 than it is to build a FAL, due to the fact the only receiver worth a shit is the IMBEL receiver, and its only group-buy is every 2 years or so.

Imbel isnt the best.
Its never been the best.
Its a good reciever dont get me wrong. But you clearly dont know shit about the FAL or metallurgy.

And the Imbel is type 3, so its ugly and heavy.

Any suggestions for a decent non-plate carrier no assembly required rig for carrying 20 round 7.62x51 magazines? I already have a SPOSN Smersh and Type 81 chest rig.

are they the best? really going for a really dependable platform and want to go highest quality
>>
>>30268505
And that is what I was leaning towards. My Type 81 has never failed me and I can't go wrong for $12.

Haley Strategic Heavy looked nice but its 20x the price and only holds 4 mags. Blackhawk's commando harness is a bit bulky and looks like something an ISIS member would wear. After dealing with the SMERSH I don't want to try and assemble some H harness again. MOLLE will just end up costing a shit ton and being a pain in the ass. That only really leaves a South African M83, a Modox Beetle and maybe some 6 mag split chest rig.

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit been looking for torrents. It isn't in the video files of the mega folder is it?
>>
It's settled, as soon as my GI Bill BAH check comes in I'm going to order a PTR 91 G.I.R. in 18" barrel and a picatinny handguard.
I'll have to figure out what optic to run, obviously iron sights for a bit, then eventually either a Holor or RDS with a FTS magnifier combo or 3-5x scope and low profile side BUIS.
Toss on my old army front grip and call it good.
>>
>>30269412
Actually, not picatinny handguard but rather a single 6" picatinny mod rail and mount it to the bottom oG the stock handguard cause I'm not putting anything on the side, and it I am it's going to be a front sight with an angle piece. And that's a stretch

Being this refucking tarded
Ugly. Implying that isn't subjective.
Mentions metallurgy, do you think you can get a forged receiver for $500 from DSA? Maybe you thought you'd catch a belgian made one at a deal?hahaha
You complete fucking moron. Imbel is to fals as ptr is to hk91s. They're both built on their licensed machinery yada yada and you can't fucking beat that since dsa the only other name in the game usually uses cast shit(mister metallurgy) imbel is as true a fal as an israeli fal is. Moreso than a fag ptr clone because imbels are not clones they're actual receivers to military use fals.

Type3, the reinforced type, implying this is a bad thing. Where the fuck you gonna get a "pretty", "light" cut type 1 faggot? Coonan? Ha, they're cast shit and are shot not just because they're cast.
>>
>>30267910

HKfags are insufferable; they need to justify their expensive purchases that really are just collector's pieces by shitposting about PTRs which are of higher quality and closer to the original G3 now that they have paddle mag releases

For what purpose?
It's cheaper to make and takes less skill. That's why it's clunkier. And I'm getting a forged type II
>>
>>30271731
The Portuguese are not really known for their quality of machined goods.

It's actual HK tooling and they're made in America. Portugal is just where HK had the factory that PTR got the tooling from.
