Why the fuck would they attack past their prime?
If they were going to attack, it would be before the 80s.

>Why the fuck would they attack past their prime?Desperation, a international incident forces their hand, miscommunication with West spirals out of control (One side holds wargames without telling the other, other side jumps the gun fearing invasion). There are many things that could happen.
Also, for sake of argument, are we not factoring nukes into the equation?

I wish there was a book full of cold war planes with annotated images like that and some cool specs / history. Now that most air frames are out of service you could get some very accurate specs and interesting facts.

No, the point of the troops there was largely to try and ensure paperwork got burned. If they were EXTREMELY lucky the ambassador and stuff could make it to the runway and bail.
Don't know if this is cold war, but it's film so it may as well be.

not the poster but IIRC they are F15's intercepting two Mig 29's over Canada. The Migs were attending an airshow and the route was filed before hand, hence the ability for a third plane to capture the moment.
They flew over the pole with drop tanks with the intention of refuelling in Canada before anyone asks.

>>30212693
I'm not denying things are pretty okay.
Just that if there's one thing I've learned from every ounce of history I've ever studied, it's that people have generally never been better or worse than they are now. Few things annoy me more than people who talk about some mythic lost age where people were more honest and kind and brave and truthful, and where the country was more honorable and better run and free of corruption.
Or on the flipside about how whatever current generation is the worst and most immoral and stupid and disrespectful and crime prone and so on and so forth.
We are essentially the same people arguing over essentially the same shit today as we were five thousand years ago.
No better, no worse, just people.

Entered service in 1983. I wonder how many would have been ready for combat by 1985? I'd imagine those available would have been tasked with attacking CnC and Air Defense targets.
Another interesting question is the number of Su-27s available in 1985. They entered service that year.

I think what anon meant was that why attack in the 1980s when thats time period that the west generally reached either parity or outright scary levels of tactical dominace, just think of what the west had standing in the way in the 1960 and 70s. Designs that were equal but not as numerous as the kekekeke t55+bmp1, a nice amount of T64s which were modern at the time, and battleplans that entailed just driving towards the Rhine on mass and they had the numers at the time. The west had better training and the token scary airforce. The 80s brought in all the meme stuff we all know and love (What is not MBT-70? M1, Leo 2, tea challys, etc)and reached a point where a ground war would not be generally one sided. INB4 logistics wins wars/reinforcement from the states/well nuclear weapons would be used anyway bla..........

I bet you're that asshole at work that ruins everyone's fun when someone brings up a hypothetical question.
Example: Would you rather bang the hottest chick at work and no one will EVER know except you, and only you. Or, not bang her and EVERYONE thinks you did.
Or: Would you rather suck Michael Moore's dick for 10000$ and no one would know, or Michael Bloomberg dick for 1,000,000$ and EVERYONE would know you blew Michael Bloomberg for 1,000,000. The kicker is you can spend the 10 grand on anything but on the one million you can't spend it on any guns, ammo, militaria, any weapons of any kind.

Cold War autist here, I've collected data on Warsaw Pact vs NATO strength levels. Will dump it all now. This information is from 1988.
We'll start with Soviet forces directly in the European theatre, though it should be noted that the Soviets could quickly have brought massively more forces to the combat zone quickly.

Soviet strategy was always to deploy numerous operational groups, mounted in the wheeled BTRs, to quickly penetrate the NATO operational depth, causing havoc, and destroying NATO infrastructure and logistics, the primary targets being airfields.
Heavy NATO forces were particularly unsuited to intercepting these nimble pincers; the Bradley weighed almost 30t and the Abrams close to 60t by this stage, with a maximum cross-country speed of 25mph. There was no chance of any sort of US-West German counter-offensive. Ten days wasn’t nearly enough for US to get an armoured division deployed and going into an offensive via REFORGER, and the Soviets would have been long over at Rheine by then.

Technological advantage doesn't win battles. Speed, aggression and mobility does. Furthermore, what specific advantages are we talking about? The 1985 M1 Abrams were still A1, manufactured with the 105mm US version of the British L7 gun, originally designed to defeat the old T-55 tanks (manufactured in 1955). Since 1993 it was conclusively shown that the 105mm gun was ineffective against T-72's frontal armor even at less than 500 meters.
>>30211755
maybe we can....modernize it?

The problem with Reforger is that it was a pretty bad idea overall in the context of a war against the Soviets. The Reforger sites were all known to the Soviets so all they really needed to do was to drop a couple of tactical nuclear strikes on them, leaving the US with an entire Corps without any heavy equipment.
Even in the unrealistic "no nukes" scenario the first move any competent Soviet commander would do would be to bomb the sites and drop a couple of airborne battalions on them to deprive NATO of some of its best units right from the outset. In the first place the Soviet General Staff had the 'Swiss Cheese' concept. This is where the Warsaw Pact intelligence gathering and reconnaissance troops would precede the general offensive by about 72 hours. The first act of war wasn't going to be artillery, but massed jamming and disruption of military and civilian communications. What would have followed next were attempts to disrupt the command and control by assassinating military and civilian leaderships everywhere.
That's the kind of enemy the West was dealing with mere 30 years ago.

>>30217305
No, it isn't. The M68 comes from the 105mm gun program that was named T254. The only thing that the M68 (the T254E2 variant) and L7 can share are barrels and ammunition as they both have the same twist.

That guy who said that the Bundeswher is literally Iraqi tier is wrong but does raise a point about moral. The Bundeswher had really great equipment but some guys in intelligence believed the West Germans lacked the resolve to spill their own blood for their cities. For example Ralph Peters, who was a NATO intelligence officer, used what he believed to be a lack of moral in his book "Red Army."

>The 80s brought in all the meme stuff we all know and love (What is not MBT-70? M1, Leo 2, tea challys, etc)
Do you realize that it takes a while to equip forces with newest stuff.
Only reason Leo2, Abrams, Challenger, F-15's, F-16's, UH-60's, AH-64's and so on became so dominant part of NATO forces in early 90's is end of Cold War, troop cuts after that led to mass retirement of legacy equipment.
In mid 80's it would have been mostly single engine AH-1's, UH-1's, M60's, M48's, Leopard 1's, Phantom II's, Mirage 5's and so on.
