The SCAR never really caught on like some thought it may.

Are battle rifles a meme?

Why bother with a full NATO cartridge when lol22magnum does the trick out to 550m?
>>
>>30208531
They were never meant to replace assault rifles, they were meant to supplement them as DMRs. They caught on sufficiently for their purpose. Stop being a dingus.
>>
>>30208531
>>30208551
Also consider that the CQC caught on just fine in the circles that needed its capabilities.

2350fps with 175gr MK316/M118LR
2675fps with 130gr MK319

You have a weapon that is more capable at both short and long ranges than an M4 or AK47 in a compact package. A very attractive alternative to humping or continually mounting/dismounting with an M110 if you don't require its precision or an 800m gasser.
>>
We don't use 7.62 cartridges in main assault rifles anymore because it's too heavy in more ways than one. Recoil is uncontrollable for some on full auto, and you need a lot more room to carry the same amount of ammo, not to mention the weight.

However, 7.62 'battle rifles' have supplemented military forces as DMR's for quite some time. The MK17, like in your photo, is a good example of that.
>>
>>30208531
For widespread use, battle rifles are absolutely a meme. Much of /k/ regrets they will never be Rhodesian light infantry.

Real fuckin' NATO serves a specific niche, and it is highly useful, but only in that niche. Otherwise, there's a reason intermediate cartridges are the order of the day. That's not to say it's not a great rifle and great at what it does, but what it does just isn't needed most of the time.
>>
>>30208531
7.62 is completely outdated outside of belt fed weapons. We already had 800m effective DMR rifles with the MK12. I'm not sure how SOCOM lost the institutional knowledge of that system. It's literally just as effective.

Instead of going with a snowflake rifle they should have gotten a snowflake caliber ala .260 Remington and ran with a system that was compatible with the existing M110. Probably could have convinced everyone else to switch to .260 for SASS type guns.

Before you parrot the muh compatibility meme, be sure to realize that M118LR and MK319 exists and are complete snowflakes anyway as far as logistics are concerned. Same thing with M855 (now M855A1) and belted M855 for SAW use.
>>
>>30208531
That's because they don't want to give their soldiers proper training with live ammo so they end up having soldiers who can't do shit but spray and pray. When they get 7.62 x 51 they can't spray and pray anymore because recoil isn't as pleasant as 5.56's.
>>
>>30208641
It's not a matter of training, full powered rifles are substandard for infantry use and intermediate ones are much better for those purposes.
>>
>>30208551
It definitely replaced the M4/Mk18 for Green Berets in Afghanistan for all intents and purposes.
>>
>>30208678
Full power rifles are substandard for infantry use because infantry should use .50BMG in their rifles*
>>
>>30208685
SOF aren't meant to engage in extended firefights in a similiar manner to common infantry, after all.
>>
>>30208709
Ah, so you're just memeing.

5.56 has less than 150 ft-ibs of energy and lost more than 60% of its initial velocity at 800m. Yeah you can engage targets at that distance but there's a point when you need to draw the line at calling it "effective" at that range.
>>
>>30209256
Oh and would you look at that. The active duty SF guy said literally the same thing in his article.

>and a 18-inch barrel (the now retired Special Purpose Rifle MK12) although you could reach out to 750 meters with that weapon/ammo combo platform, unless you achieved a head shot, the 5.56 round (5.56x45mm NATO) is pretty anemic in terms of one shot stopping power.

The SPR is not effective at putting down targets at 800m, especially if they have literally any kind of body armor on. You can possibly suppress and score lucky hits at 800m, but even this guy says it's not that good at those distances.

No. They tried to be an assault rifle replacement, failed, then found their niche as designated marksman rifles. They have remained as such for decades.
>Why bother with a full NATO cartridge when lol22magnum does the trick out to 550m?
I would pay to see someone try to kill someone on a windy day with a .22 Magnum at 550m. It'd be skit of the year. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if you could have a picnic "under fire".

This, versus the NATO cartridge's weight and downrange velocity.

I seriously have no idea (other than trolling) why you would entertain a varmint round for killing at half a kilometer before a round that is perfectly comfortable up to 700m. Stop.

What im getting at is that a weapon thats ideal for a fire team/squad/platoon/company/etc of soldiers who have logistical, artillery, and CAS support, might not be ideal for someone who doesn't have the goals or support of a miltary.

Rifleman dont really get the kills on the modern battlefield anyway. Belt fed and artillery does by and large.

What is the longest range confirmed kill with 5.56x45? Easy way to tell if the cartridge has enough velocity left past 800m to penetrate. My suspicion is that, assuming you can account for wind, you'd probably have enough oomph to puncture a lung at what, 900fps?

I know Jim Gilliland has the longest confirmed kill with 7.62x51 at 1250m.

>that maximum shill for the SCAR
ok, it's a good gun but holy fuck i can see this guy trying to market everyshit from miles away

also let's not forgot one thing :
7.62 sucks for short range because the round will just go through the target body without time to expand inside of it, so either you have one guy with the 7.62 for DMR use, either you whole group as to carry two type of ammunition

Not just recoil. Battle rifles are heavier than assault rifles, and it takes extra strength to handle it.

On a bright side - when I get my 5.56 poodle shooter, it feels like a feather compared to 7.62 NATO, and not only I don't have any problems with recoil and accuracy, I'm also getting a wide grin for the rest of the day. Too easy.

I love it, man, it's heavier than just about every AR-15 but a lot of it is meant to balance out the weight of the heavy receiver in the front. It's a tank and I goddamn love it. Had my entire family shoot it this January, they all said it ended up being their favorite.

Eh, I don't mind it, it's pretty damn comfy, especially for gloved use. Tt takes very little effort to move the forward grip from horizontal to vertical. Would be neat as fuck to have, but Stayr would demand 500$ for it. And then 50$ for a proprietary grip and trigger guard.

Only real problem I've noticed is the sharp edges on the safety, but those can easily be sanded down.
>>
>>30223572
>Only notices the sharp edges on the safety.

You need to be pretty bright in order to be in any SF. The average Amerinigger has an IQ of 85, hispanics are about the same at about 90. Non-hispanic whites have an average IQ around 100 thus most non-whites tend to wash out at higher rates. Also as to what >>30222657 is talking about with Native Americans, most are highly mixed with whites and only like 1/4 Ameri-indian and have average IQs closer to Hispanics. Now the biggest thing that IQ relates to here in populations is culture and behavior. Lower IQ individuals tend to have impulse control issues among other things which all leads to fewer people of lower IQ populations passing. North East Asians have an average IQ around 100-105 however very few of them join the military and they're also a tiny fraction of the US population anyway.

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2014/09/26/trigger-pulls-good-bad-ugly/

Alright. So the civ SCAR comes pretty much like it gets delivered to the military, which means a standard single stage trigger.

That means it can vary quite a bit. Heard anywhere from 6.5 to 9lbs but 7-8 seems to be the most common... at least from people who actually bothered to measure it and aren't making it up from "feel" or just outright complaining that the trigger should be perfect from the start.

I can't give you a specific number and if you don't have a trigger pull scale you might not even be able to tell if and when you did break it in. My advice to you is to just do your usual dry-firing with snap caps and not try and cheat with the dremel or we will see you in a greentext story thread or your gun for sale as "like-new".
>>
>>30223990
My stock SCAR trigger is fine.
It's a 7lb trigger, clean, not too long.

Got a deal on the super scar trigger for $100 off. Snatched it up. My next SCAR is going to have a shooting site trigger.
>>
>>30223990
So is the Geiselle trigger worth it?
>>
>>30223811
It just didn't get any support from Remington. The cartridge is great.
>>
>>30208531

>The SCAR never really caught on like some thought it may.

It wasn't meant to "catch on" because it was designed specifically for a certain customer. Everyone else gets to pay ~$3k for the privilege to own a rifle that takes proprietary magazines while FNH laughs all the way to the bank.

It's not a bad rifle, but for that much money I don't want to have to put up with a stock I'd rather replace and having to swap to a third party lower to use plentiful and cheap pmags.
>>
>>30224133
absolutely.
>>
>>30224133

It was built for the MK20 variant and became so popular that they invested in the tooling to mass produce it versus machining it... which dropped the price by $75.

The Shooting Sight trigger is the new guy and they have features that make it an interesting buy. I don't doubt that you'd be happy with either choice.

He's trolling, broseph. The SCAR, G36, MSBS, and the Sig MCX are all based on the AR-18 action.

Although I think all of them but the MCX use a tappet short stroke without a dedicated return springs, but I may be wrong on that count.
>>
>>30228441
>I think all of them but the MCX use a tappet short stroke without a dedicated return springs

The SCAR is the only tappet system of that list. MCX, G36, ACR, MSBS etc all use piston op rods with return springs.
>>
>>30228430
yeah, but it's still cute
>>
>>30208597
The scar isn't as adept for cqc than the M4, it has more recoil, less magazine capacity, and is a heavier, harder to maneuver rifle. Meme all you want about being weak, you want a lighter, smaller firearm if you're getting into closed quarters, and that's where the M4 shines over the SCAR H. On the other hand, as a DMR or long range engagement rifle with capabilities of moving close in, the SCAR H is perfectly capable of doing the job, more so than an M4.
