Russia has a long and proud tradition of designing murder machines.

However, due to a fundamental misunderstanding, they mostly kill their own crew.

Memes aside, Russia hasn't invested too much in their navy. The Japanese seemed to have kicked their shit in so hard they just lost the will to into-boats. Even at its peak the soviet navy was leagues behind the US Navy. The Russian navy as it is probably couldn't take the British navy, despite Britain being significantly smaller and investing less in their military.
Most Russian boats are leftover soviet designs with critical maintenance issues, compounded by the fact that one of their main shipyards was in Ukraine (not exactly Russia's friend right now).

The Russians are repairing and refitting an aircraft carrier for India just so they can RELEARN how to build Carriers, since their current carrier is unreliable and breaks down at the drop of a hat. This process has seen cost overruns, extra time, and generally has been a shitshow as Russian corruption/incompetence at shipbuilding and Indian corruption/deal renegotiation habits collide in a spectacular shitshow.

Russian navy has been serving almost exactly the same purpose for the last 300 years. It's priorities for the next 25+ years would be nuclear deterrence, disrupting enemy's amphibious assaults along the coasts and shipping lanes security. All you need for that is a bunch of corvettes, frigates, diesel boats and ballistic missile submarines. Leave it to China and US to catfight over few pisshole islands in the Pacific.

>>30208513
As the North Pole exploration becomes a bigger deal Americans suddenly realize they have no icebreakers, ice-hardened vessels or ports above the Polar circle, which means that Russia has won the Arctic war long before it even began.
>>
>>30210005
One of the major drivers of interest in the arctic is the lessening need for icebreakers and ice hardended ships.
>>
>>30209863
You don't really need anything larger than a current DDG. DDG powerplants are more than capable of powering railguns at a sustained rate of fire while running all the other equipment on board and what drove the upsizing of battleships was the need to support larger and larger guns, something a railgun doesn't need.

>>30210005

why do the russians have a ship named after a german city?

I'm guessing that it's actually named after some obscure Russian military leader/naval commander, as many Russian ships share this criteria, and in pre-soviet Russia, there were a lot of people in Russia who had partially German names (many ships are named after pre-soviet people too). I'm too lazy to actually search this up but this is my guess.

Global warming is still happening, arctic ice is at an all time low, and droughts in the middle east/africa are contributing to terrorism/refugees. It's a fairly well accepted reality by modern military planers.

Its going to be only relatively ice free in the summer, the rest of the year you still need icebreakers to clear the way to ensure the route remains viable. Also even in summers there is the danger of huge as fuck blocks of ice blocking the route in some parts.

Anyways, not even oil company shills deny that global warming is happening. They just claim it's not caused by humans, or that it won't be as bad in the long term. If you seriously think global warming is completely false you are retarded. Glaciers are receding and sea ice is melting. These are all things that are documented and happening right now as we speak.

And India was not exactly thrilled with the job they did.

You CAN loose expertise (and thus knowledge). This was an attempt to regain some of said expertise.

>what is the Russo-Japanese war.
I wasn't talking ww2. In the Russo-Japanese war in the early 20th they got BTFO'd hard. Even navally they were humiliated. Particularly when the Royal Navy threatened to sink the entire Russian navy over a shipping issue (Russians shoot Brit boat. Brits demanded compensation at gun point).

Submarines cross into other people's waters regularly, on both sides. But subs are hardly the only combatants, nor do they solely matter. Subs have literally rammed each other before, not realizing the other was there. THAT should put into perspective how hard it can be to find those fucking things. Seas are big. Bigger than we can probably comprehend. Deeper than the tallest buildings are tall, and can be wider than Russia itself. The ability to sneak past naval defenses with a sub isn't necessarily a huge accomplishment, and frankly it is possible that the Brits may allow it if only to preserve the existence of some submarine-hunting tech (such actions have precedent. The Americans tapped soviet sub locations and largely left them unmolested during the 60s. Brits allowed nazi subs to move and act in some cases to preserve the secret of ENIGMA being cracked). I doubt this tho.

Diesel subs tended to be quieter for a long time. This claim sounds like "mo money" concerns, the US was largely confident in its sub fleet for the past 70-odd years. Unless Russia made a breakthrough in the last 20 years I don't see this being true. They've made AShM improvements, so perhaps their Dakka has improved, but detection, etc., I sincerely doubt. Being undetected and getting accurate shots in then GTFO'ing is the name of the game. I don't doubt Russian subs are good. But as a whole their navy has historically sucked the donkey dick, like they destroyed some vengeful sea-god's temple

It's an export. Not only is that only a design passed by a firm that is not agreed upon by MoD, it is also passed as an export monkey model that has only passed the 'design' phase, probably made by college interns for the company.

Who gives a fuck what those streetshitters say?
Can't find anywhere else on the planet who is willing to convert a carrier with that stinker of a budget.
>You CAN loose expertise (and thus knowledge). This was an attempt to regain some of said expertise.
And what expertise did they get converting that hulk that is in any way going to be relevant 15 years from now when they seriously consider making real ACs?
>I wasn't talking ww2.
But you were talking about an event that is even more irrelevant to today's Russian Navy...
>In the Russo-Japanese war in the early 20th they got BTFO'd hard.
And? They paid that shit with interest when they got cocky a few years later and got BTFO'd in Manchuria. Being dumbasses that they were they proceeded to sooth their butthurt by sneak attacking Western colonies in the Pacific, then doing the unthinkable...
>Particularly when the Royal Navy threatened to sink the entire Russian navy over a shipping issue (Russians shoot Brit boat. Brits demanded compensation at gun point).
Not really. They tailed the Rooskies sure, but the Bongs were placated with a fall guy left behind with promise of an investigation.
>The ability to sneak past naval defenses with a sub isn't necessarily a huge accomplishment,
But it is. If you can sneak past defences you can camp in supposedly safe waters for the Bong Boomers. No Boomer, no deterrent.
>frankly it is possible that the Brits may allow it if only to preserve the existence of some submarine-hunting tech
Occam's suggest it has to do most with their government stripping the ASW budget.

>lessening need for icebreakers and ice hardended ships.
First off, global warming is a myth, and Arctic icemelt is a natural cycle, mmmkay? Now that we've got this one out of the way, no, the rising temperature in the Arctic doesn't mean that the ice just magically disappears everywhere and vessels can freely go through. In the Arctic, you have more thinning and decrease in the ice pack rather than outright meltdown, which just makes it easier to pierce through at certain points, ice-free in the others, and freeze unpredictably somewhere else due to shifting climate conditions. You NEED icebraekers and ice-capable vessels for secure access to all of these locations. You LOSE a superpower status if you don't control new major shipping lanes, 30% of world's remaining oil and 80% of Earth's fresh water in coming decades.

>>30210118
>The primary method of power projection in the arctic is submarines
The US never had any underwater power projection in the Arctic beyond limited submarine patrols. And when the enemy has bases, airfields and deepwater ports all over the region any submarine is reduced to a food for Tu-142 or Ka-27.
>>
>>30211414
>But no, using a highly experimental weapon like that could cause an international incident.

Same with the russians.

>And when the enemy has bases, airfields and deepwater ports all over the region any submarine is reduced to a food for Tu-142 or Ka-27.

Kind of hard to dip a sonar into ice. Furthermore, the russians dont have what you claim in relevent boomer ranges.

The Russians were actually pioneers in getting their subs to the arctic. The US had to run a crash course to get submarines operating up there anywhere near the Soviets once they realized that sort of thing would be important in a war scenario.

Oh my god.

In the 1800's, Britain had the largest fleet in the world and was sailing about willy fucking nilly with the most advanced steam engines ever constructed to date. They were sailing to Japan, Hong Kong, India, fucking everywhere.

Now they can't build a ship that can sail out of its berth.
>>
Reminder that Russian shipebuilders were unable to make a modern LHD so they had to buy French Mistrals to compensate.

However after Putin invaded Crimea the French cancelled the order and sold the ships to fucking EGYPT.

Now Russia has no Mistrals

How is something like this even possible? How do you make an engine that only works in one specific place in the world? It's not like it's even some kind of prototype green fuel engine that works off some vague theory, it's a gas engine! how in the fuck
