Do you have any friends with funs?
If so go to a range session with them, ask them to teach you the basics (assuming they're responsible and competent).
After that, go searching around for a .22 you like.
If you don't have any friends or friends with funs, watch some youtube videos until you understand enough in theory hwo firearms work, memorize the cardinal rules of firearm safety, get yourself a .22 and then start finger fucking it until you "get" how it works.

I think .22lr is special in that it's contextual.
When I bought my 10/22, the LGS guy's sold me the ammo as well, no question asked, even though I'm only 19. When I got some more without the gun present, they asked what I'm purchasing it for, told them 10/22 rifle, rang me right up.

To answer your question, I like medium rare overall, but if a cut is quite lean and tender like a filet mignon i'll go rare.
If the cut is quite fatty and well-marbled, i can push it as far as medium, but anything beyond that can go fuck itself.

My grandmother bought chuck steaks, cooked them to WTFDONECHARCOALBURNED levels, and THAT was the only actual beef I had for nearly the first 20 years of my life because my parents are cheapskate vegetarians. Hell, I like McDonald's hamburger meat more than any actual steak because of that (snuck out and ate that when I had the chance, eighty-nine cents a burger was barely affordable on my shit allowance as a kid).
To this day, I can barely stomach even pink meat, let alone red. If I cook it, it has to be cooked brown or grey, because I've been conditioned from birth to eat it that way and reject anything cooked even slightly less.

For t-bone, burgers, and ribeye, I marinate using a mix of crushed black pepper, fresh squeezed cayenne pepper, salt, fresh crushed garlic and union, and coriander. Similarly, I use significantly less black pepper and no salt, while adding paprika, for salmon. True to character of a true asshole, I like my steaks bold, so I use a lot of black pepper and a fair amount of garlic, as well as mixing in tablespoon of A1 steak sauce. I grill on a medium flame, and while my wife's nu-wave oven actually did a nice job, I like my grill too much.
Anyway, medium flame, never press down throughout cooking. I let the fat just soak the fucking steak, I never squeeze or press on the steak because I like it juicy, not dry and disgusting. I cook kinda halfway between medium and medium-well, and serve with a side of mashed potatoes sporting a similar mix of salt and home made crushed pepper mix and butter. Sometimes we steam vegetables too, but I let my wife deal with those because she's russian and has a special way of cooking veggies.

Literally force yourself to eat a steak cooked medium well. Try starving yourself for a day before trying it. Drink a light pilsner or a dry ale.
Then try a medium steak. Drink a Sam Adams or other rich pils or lager. Not a light beer, something with flavor.
If all goes well, get a rare fillet mignon or chateaubriand. Drink a good rich red wine with the steak. I like a malbec. Anything South American or Italian will be good.

I started with a Mosin, why? Because it's cheap, loud, hits hard, and has great history behind it.
Next, went to a Marlin 336. Because I like lever guns and the west in general, and that particular gun looked and felt great.
16 guns later.... I still don't own a single .22 lr.
If you get a .22, go with a Marlin 70 or a 10/22 I'd say. If you can afford it, Henry makes a gorgeous .22 Golden Boy that is just pure sex.
If you like war stuff or historical stuff, now may be a great time to buy an SKS (currently my favorite Riafu) before they explode more in price.
Whatever you do, make sure you like it, make sure you want it, don't buy it because a bunch of Jerry-posters on an Ethiopian sand-scatting board told you to.
