How does one determine the best bullet grain for its gun?

I have a Colt M4 14,5" and I am about to buy some bulk 55 grains Sellier & Bellot because it's cheap AF but before I buy in bulk I am wondering if I shouldn't experiment with grains and such...

Can you enlighten me /k/ ?

Based on barrel twist rate.

W/ 55 grain shouldn't it be a 1/7th twist?

Is there a conversion table per twist rates and caliber ? or somethign similar ?

Bulllet construction is more important than bullet weight.

In 556. Your only going to have a few options in an ar.

Your barrel is 1/9 1/8 or 1/7

All will stabalize a 55gn.
On a 14.5 with a 1/7 i would use the 62n or 69gn.

1:7 to 1:9 seem to be good for most of the stuff out there.

your twist rate determines a window of suitable bullet weights. too heavy and it won't stabilize, too light and it might get damaged before even leaving the barrel (the latter is pretty uncommon).

you probably have a 1/7 twist, which should be suitable for 55-77 gr bullets.
there is no telling which load will work well in your gun without trying, so just buy various boxes of ammo which are both available to you and economically feasible and try them all.

Since it's a Colt 14"5 I presume it's 1/7 so according to the chart 55 grain is not that good...

What kind of impact are we talking about if I use 55 grain to shoot at paper at 100 yrds ?

55 gr might actually be the most accurate in your barrel.

I have a BCM 16" 1/7 upper that I reload for. For the life of me, I can't get any 55gr rounds to group in less than 3" at 100 where my 77grainers are sub MOA. I had another AR with a 1/9 that ate up and loved 55gr rounds.

if its not enough, it wont cycle
if its too much your gun will explode

I have a 1:7 barrel and 55gr shoots the best out of it (besides 77otm) it really depends on your barrel, whp made it, what day, and what mood the operator was when working it.

I personally am in love with 55gr M193 in my AR, but it's a 20" barrel with 1:9 rifling. I can't think of any reason why I'd want heavier bullets right now, but someone might be able to suggest a use for them.
