I totally agree that's a GOAT innawoods caliber and I use my .300blk AR for camping/hog hunting, but OP said inexpensive, so I assume that also means the ammunition it uses.

the SKS is still the cheapest semi auto intermediate at bottom line. still ~$350-450.

5.56 ARs can be made for cheaper, but they require outfitting. for instance, i could hypothetically put a PTAC (absolute shit AR) together on an Anderson lower for ~400-420, +/- depending on how generous PSAs being at the time...but I'll still need a rear sight and mags. so add ~$30 for the worst chinkshit sight you can think of, and ~$10-12 each for PMAGs.

so, you will end up around or just above $500 with an AR...and a shit AR at that. a meh-tier AR goes up to ~$500-550 for just the rifle.

AKs have gotten retarded expensive since the Obama import bans, and even shitty AKs are going for $650+ in my neck of the woods. new ones are over $800 anymore.

so, SKS is cheapest, AR is mid level and the AK is price inflated.

personally I'd tell you to get an AR, because it's a better gun than the SKS, and getting a mid-tier AR is maybe a hundred dollars more than an expensive SKS.

op wants a woods gun. .30 caliber rounds have better barrier penetration and thus maintain lethality shooting in underbrush better.

it's a specialised round, and woods gun happens to be a specialised application.

7.62×39 is great, out of a short barrel. Make an ar pistol op, or check out that pap m 92 i think it is. Its an ak pistol. I dont like it, personally, but its pretty neat.

I dont think its got better barrier penetration, in the sence i dont think it can travel through more material. But a heavier bullet will be more stable after it hits small shit, like dead twigs, and leaves, and small trees. x39 is the .40 s&w of rifle rounds.
