So my friend is looking for his first handgun that will be a conceal carry, and hiking handgun. He is in Colorado. He wants something he can pocket carry and can stop a bear. My recommendation for him was an sp101 with a 2 and whatever inch barrel. He can use 38 specials for conceal carry and 357 for hiking. Any other recommendations under $600?

>Colorado

.357 magnum or 10mm auto at the bare minimum, but he'd be better off going a bit bigger.
glock 29?
It's kind of hard to conceal carry AND have something in handgun form to stop a bear without going up there in caliber sizes.
Even with handguns, you still need special ammo that's usually loaded hotter or heavier.
Get a used glock/shield for conceal.
Get a 12ga shotty with slugs for bear country.

Glock 20
Do they have Grizzly's in Colorado? Pussy ass black bears should run just at loud noises. Tell him to get a Glock 19 or whatever caliber glock he likes and practice marksmanship.
A whole magazine center mass should drop anything.
>Hur I want to pocket carry
>Dur I want to kill a bear
What a fucking faggot. Wow he hikes 1 day out of 30 in a month, it's inconceivable he may in fact need 2 guns for 2 different fucking purposes. Turn that on its head and he mingles with faggots in Denver 1 day out of 30 in a month and wow guess what it still makes sense to just get 2 fucking guns for 2 different fucking purposes.

Too big for pocket carry
>>30185966
I did also recommend this fingerfucked in gun store but seemed a bit big for pocket carry
>>30185981
Some but not very many like a very small number while black bears are scared off easily it seems like a meme that they run from anything although I've always seen them running. They also have moose in Colorado which are a big concern along with mountain lions.

>Pocket carry BUT can take down a bear
>$600
well, tell your buddy he's a moron, unless he wants to get into the engineering field and make a cartridge that is small enough to pocket carry but strong enough to match vs. bear.
>>30186016
>some grizzlies
>mountain lions
>moosen
tell your buddy to get pants with big pockets or a good holster and suck it up
>>30186016
its colorado he should be able to shroud the gun for most of the year and the recoil is much more controllable then a 29 meaning he gets three hits instead of one on a charging bear
>pocket carry
>>30185993
I'll definitely agree that it's nice to have more guns and even nicer to have a gun for each purpose. He doesn't live in Denver and hikes regularly he lives over near Avon. So the only entertainment is hiking in the summer or skiing in the winter. It's mostly a cost prohibited thing. Seems that a 357 snub nose is good enough but not ideal for both.

Yeah I know I've tried pointing him along that holsters for iwb and owb are better than pocket carry but he likes the idea of being able to just grab and go without needing to worry too much.
Bears are not his biggest concern because again it's mostly black bears that run away. He mostly wants a small relatively powerful gun. My main question is what guns fall in the small wheel gun chambered in 357 or slightly larger category that I might have missed?

S&W 60
>>30186084
there are special 357 loads for wildlife, but maybe he should also take bear spray with him as well.
>>30186016
I live in colorado and do a ton Inna wiods, moose and mountain lions are way more of a concern than bears, tell him to get a 44 mag or a decent sized 357 and just forget about pocket carrying because that's for ladies and retards
>>30185932
>2" barrel
>.357 Magnum
Pointless, you barely get any boost in power over using .38 Specials, while getting more recoil and noise, not good for a bear gun.
At the least get a 4" barrel for shooting .357 Magnum
Black bears just run away, so the odds of having to shoot one is microscopic, brown bear or grizzly bear would necessitate .44 Magnum or larger, preferably much larger for grizzly.

>while black bears are scared off easily it seems like a meme that they run from anything although I've always seen them running.
They really are super timid, near every instance of someone shooting a black bear was because they bluff charged. Shout at them sternly to fuck off and they will panic and run away.
If he's worried of moose, mountain lion and brown bear, I'd seriously suggest he carry a rifle or a shotgun of some sort.

Hmm. What about .22tcm?
>>30188450
For bear?
>>30189000
Yeah it's certainly not the best option, but it hits fast, and has minimal recoil and comes in a 1911 package which is pretty concealable. I'd be curious to see what it could do to a bear.
>>30189036
Piss him off.
>>30187029
This. Sp101 is fine but in the 2.xx" model just use 38+p. 357 is just more fireball. He could also consider the LCR. Probably a better pocket option.
>>30189036
Unless we're talking black bear, .22TCM would probably be about as good an idea to shoot him with as .32ACP for all that he cares
Good for sporting, and arguably humans, not large predators.
>>30189079
I mean with the lack of recoil and the fact that you would want to carry a few mags would it be that unreasonable to pepper the lungs or head?
>>30189071
That's what I said, that .357 does nothing for you in a 2" or shorter barrel, and that you get the same result for .38
Neither the SP101 with a 2" nor any of the LCR revolvers are fit for any kind of bear, good carry revolvers, but bad bear guns.
>>30189093
The thing with fast light projectiles is they dump energy quick which means it would have a hard time penetrating
>>30189093
Not gonna do good enough on him, by the time he dies from bloodloss or lack of oxygen, he's already raped you like he would Leonardo DeCaprio.
A shotgun, be it a pump or automatic, would be a saner choice for someone like you, you seem to get crazy ideas about what pistol would be suitable for bear.
>>30189095
That's why I said "this" ya dongus. I was agreeing.
>>30185932
What kind of bear, brown bear? I wouldn't shoot it with a fucking sp101, tell him to get bear spray instead. He could consider a Glock 29 though with heavy hardcast (and gas checked) buffalo bore or something..
>>30185932
Pic related in backpack if you're really worried about defending against bears. Use Brenneke special forces hard cast short magnum whatever rounds it is they sell.
If you want self defense, carry with a backpack is hard because the waist band takes up the normal carry locations and shirt holsters are kind lame frankly. If he's just out on day hikes, his best bet is to open carry bear spray.
>>30189158
Not OP was just legit curious about the oddball projectile and if she could handle the job.
.357 with hard cast dead boolits loaded nice and hot should be enough for Mr. Bear, but make sure he practices a lot with it, as it will kick hard
>>30185932
lol this whole post
>>30190248
Fucking this.
>>30189557
There's many less than usual hangun cartridges I could see you use against bears
>.440 CorBon
>.450 Wildey
>.357 Maximum
>.475 Linnebaugh
It's just that .22TCM is just not going to be able to take any larger bear within any reason, at most he'll slowly bleed to death or get an infection, but it won't stop his attack.
>>30189679
For black bear? Sure, but you'd be a fucking fool to try to take on a brown bear or grizzly bear with any .357 Magnum loading
>>30190401
I went with .22tcm because it fit the criteria. If the OP wasn't ridiculous I would have said go for .454, but reading the OP I got curious. .22TCM has some interesting qualities, a heavier bullet could be really interesting. I don't think it's the best idea, was just curious as to if it would be actually usable. This has gotten me curious about it.
>>30190425
I think it's a good cartridge, but again, not a good beargun, I wouldn't suggest .45ACP or 9mm Luger for bears, but I still think they're great.
