Once problem allied soldiers noticed was that they are too closed minded and do poorly in areas of initiative, unlike the Koreans who have to deal with loads of Nork shenanigans over the years and have developed tactics and operation capacity that came in handy when they were engaged in several conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

The Japanese navy is literally the best equipped and amongst the largest in the region. Japan would never first strike China or land an invasion force so that is moot. Japan's contribution to the Iraq War was purely nominal. A single platoon of unarmed plant troop for reconstruction was offered as a diplomatic gesture to broaden out the Coalition and even that caused huge controversy in Japan.
When the Diet voted last year to relax Article 9 a bit and permit Japanese troops to be deployed in support of allies there were people setting themselves alight to protest it. Japan's culture is still hugely anti-war.

They're still a more loose based command economy, they still have a one party system involved, still reject the civil liberties of their people, they don't allow unions and they make their workers wage slaves in factories, thus communism is basically more of a foundation of their socialist system. Even then, there's hardly much of a difference since socialism is a system utilized as a way to prepare and transfer a government into communism. You could say that the Chinese regressed from Mao's version of communism into a borderline socialist/communist/technocratic system

Japan's got a pretty decent navy and good kit, the problem is that the whole country is so anti war there are hardly any troops compared to the giant populous of neets with their body pillows that need some dicaprine. This also makes the troops incredibly inexperienced. Japan's military could be good once again but it needs a bit of a push

Also I live near JASDF Gifu airbase and since Abe started pushing for militarization there's been a noticeable increase in the number of training flights. Now they're flying dozens of practice sorties and patrols every day.
True, China has a larger force but Japan has a substantial part of the US fleet hanging around itching to smear some dirty Chinamen and they've been turtling for decades. If the situation was bad enough to require the JGSDF I think they'd be fucked regardless of experience...but there are plenty of Marines to reinforce them and assist in delaying actions while the rest of NATO (read: the US) mobilizes.
Also helps that besides Nagasaki (Sasebo base) there's really not much of value on Japan's west coast, just lightly populated prefectures with little industry or strategic value and lots of mountains.
If China managed to land troops for an offensive without being detected too early they could cause severe problems for Japan. The reprisal would be total, however. The military command on the mainland would be decapitated overnight.
So it basically comes down to how bad do they want it.
