Did they go to the YPG or the Peshmerga? I know the Iraqi Kurds have some high standards for foreigners but it seems like the YPG wouldn't be in a position to turn away free soldiers, no matter how shitty.

There was a good thread on /b/ last year by a guy out there fighting. I think he was European. He timestamped and provided some great pictures. His general message was that it's actually fucking boring and Westerners aren't really trusted all that much to do anything useful because of all the gung-ho walter mittys that went over.

I'm one of them
I'm in the process of getting over, the YPG is having severe issues with getting volunteers in. I would turn this into an AMA, but I haven't really done jack shit aside from save up my money and talk with the nice men in Rojava.
>>
>>30182885

How long are you intending to stay there for?
>>
>>30182902
As long as it takes to win, anon. I've got nothing better going on, and to be honest, civilian life is getting boring.
>>30182340
The KRG has fucked up relations with their Syrian counterparts, due to Turkish fuckery as far as I'm told. The KRG is arresting people crossing into and out of Syria.

I've been learning Kurmanji for about 7 months, I'm not fluent but I can hold conversation and give/take orders. I've also been reading up on their culture and talking with a few Kurds so I don't come off as a prick
Army 11bambam, three years and some change. No combat deployments, sadly, and I don't want to reenlist on the off chance we get to go to Syria soon if I could be there in a few months fighting with the YPG.
>>
>>30183033
>Army 11bambam, three years and some change.
Why did you leave early?
>>
>>30183058
Fraudulent enlistment found during a security clearance check. I forgot about a fine I had as a juvenile, the investigators prodded and I genuinely couldn't remember anything about it occurring. Nothing ever came up on it for my MEPS check, my station check, any of it. The investigators believed me when I said I didn't remember anything, partially because I was waived through for a much more serious charge to enlist in the first place, and I had no reason to hide something so minor. I didn't get an RE-4, thankfully, but they said it was still an unqualified enlistment, and I got the boot.
>>
>>30183033

How did you start the volunteering process?
>>
>>30183179
thelionsofrojavacom, did my PGP encryption and contacted the email address.
The site has been down for awhile, I managed to get in contact before they basically told everyone to fuck off until things were fixed. As it stands, they have no solid date on when they'll manage to get people in, but they think it'll be in the next three or four months, and as soon as a date is known, they're bringing the site back up.
>>
>>30182885
You're doing Gods work over there
Seriously, thank you for what you're doing
>>
>>30183428
I appreciate it, but I haven't accomplished much of anything yet. I donate regularly to the Rojava plan though, so I guess that's karma points

My motivations are really surrounding my hatred of the Assad regime, the Islamic State, and the rest of the groups in the region that keep screwing everything up for everyone. Sure, for every one Westerner that's there to do good, there's ten that are there to play Rambo. I get it, war isn't something many experience, but it's deeper than that. I'm a trained Infantryman, I know I'm not completely useless. I can tolerate the shit. I know I'll be a propaganda tool for the Kurds, and that's okay, as long as I'm permitted to actually help out somewhere.

But really, I think of it this way. I wouldn't ever want to live in an area where my people were actually oppressed, or where the threat of Jihadi John coming over the sand and beheading my entire village being real. I love freedom, and I love people that love freedom. And the Kurds love freedom, but don't have much, so I'll fight for it, because at the end of the day, I genuinely care only for liberty, and not much else

An hero'ing soon, where do I sign up for Kurdistan?

No military experience.

Lots of fun experience. Know the AK platform inside and out (saiga-converterfag here).

Handy with tools and in good physical shape. Facing legal trouble at home and basically want a break from it all. Will I have to renounce US citizenship?

Any leads?

It was in the Middle Eastern General, a kind anon provided my a source. All in all, the only reason why have Turks in NATO is their strategic area against the Russians. Either way, Erdogan is making shit complicared for us. by not allowing us to deploy from Turkey, and staring shit with Russia, as well as bomb the Kurds near the Syrian-Turkish border. They're more of a hinderance than an ally at this point.
Keep in mind, this is made by a liberal faggot, so there will be some author bias here, but it provides an overall general idea of the modern day Kurdish political ideology

>>
>>30190182
Yeah, I'm not sure if you had a look at that, but it says anti-capitalist pretty early on. The YPG and their associated paramilitary groups under the banner of the KCK follow the ideology of democratic confederalism which is this anarcho-eco-socialist type thing based on the writings of Murry Bookchin. This is only the YPG/YPJ Sinjar Resistance Units, and PKK. The KRG peshmerga are largely divided between the PUK and KDP, the former being more left wing than the latter both being primarily driven by Kurdish nationalism.

You'd probably do just fine, but there's not any action with TOWs (if that's what you mean by rockets). But as a former combat eng I did get a good chance to do some EOD and mine laying.

>>30190304
The PUK is also driven by Kurdish nationalism, but does have the more left-wing slant, as well as being more pan-Middle East Kurdish as opposed to the KDP's Iraqi Kurd focus.

One of the group that was the most committed.

It came down to like 6 of us, with one guy apparently having a contact in Erbil who could get everything moved forward. I had a seat reserved on a flight and everything, was waiting for a final word to move all my stuff into storage and term my lease.

It got up to like two months before the agreed date and the guy who was "organizing" all of it just dropped off the face of the earth. We had an encrypted email group going and he just disappeared. The remaining people tried to stay organized and two of them might have even actually gone but they lived in the same city and would have gone together. Without a contact I wasn't going to solo it.

So, unfortunately, I never followed through. One of my great regrets and it kind of seems like I missed my window, the current situation seems... not good.

i'm a fan, we have talked a few times before. I'm curious, how do westerners get supplementary gear into the country? I've seen people with like vortex optics and hunting nightvision that they brought with them and you said you were given a body armor plate by someone. how does bringing or shipping gear into iraq/syria work?

if i were to ever lose my current way of life i would seriously consider going and helping the kurds slay bodies but it would make me feel better knowing i didn't have to rely on shitty equipment.
>>
>>30193450
>how do westerners get supplementary gear into the country
AFAIK much is bought from markets in Iraq and brought over on the hump to Syria. Can't speak personally since I didn't actually go to them. The body armour was from a comrade over there. The Kurds provide camo, rig, rifle, and ammo, supplements like armour and the plate carrier were bought by us. Guy on lower right was the one with the plates
