Good evening /k/ommandos!
My son wants to graduate from his BB Gun.
We were thinking of a Break Barrel.
Any suggestions?
I want a gun that can grow with him.
I'm looking for something fast but not to expensive.
At least 1200fps.
Pic only semi related.
Let's keep it under $350.
>>
>>30172582
>At least 1200fps.
Really?
>>
>>30172582
I have a gammo whisper shoots around 1250 when using light PBA ammo. its a great gun and a blast to shoot with a scope I have repeatedly hit a target at 100 yards the size of a quarter. Also velocity isn't as important as you think, but if you want it gammo has some monsters in .17 shooting at 1600 fps with special ammo. Also make sure you son has respect for wild life ex wont shoot cats and stuff, iv seen videos of kids shooting peoples cats makes me sick
>>
>>30172599
Is that too fast for the price range?
>>
honestly the most extreme break barrel in terms of speed is this but if you want under 350 the gammo whisper mach 1 shoots at 1450 for 250 some odd dollars and is similar to my older whisper. Which is a good gun that still shoots well years later.http://www.gamousa.com/product.aspx?productID=463
>>
>>30172636
If he gets caught shooting pets or anything, for that matter, his butt is going in a sling.
Gun safety and respect has been drilled since he was around 2 or 3.
He's 10 now.
I'm just a little iffy about the cocking force.
I heard they can be pretty hard to cock.
Speaking of which, have you ever encountered a bent barrel from cocking them?
>>
>>30172637
no but speed isn't necessary is what I think that person was trying to get at. also it tends to be the average velocity for most adult air guns. Also in Europe their is an energy restriction on air rifles I think its 18j which means the ones in Europe shoot less then 1200fps if my memory serves me correctly .
>>
>>30172637
Speed is really meaningless. Pellets shouldn't go over 950FPS because their diabolo shape doesn't stabilize at transonic speeds.
>>
>>30172684
>>30172689
Sorry.
I just thought using a heavy pellet would compensate.
I know bullets.
I know very little about pellets.
>>
>>30172699
No shame in that OP, I think you'll find most of us on the board can say the same.
>>
>>30172673
good to hear about the gun safety training that's always a great first. I have never bent a barrel my self although I have heard in older rifles that if you do not completely cock them and let go early the barrel will sap back and can be bent that way. The cocking force is nothing to worry about I was using my gammo whisper at around the same age its around 25-30 pounds but feels like less because of the leverage you have probably closer to 10 pounds. Not to bias you towards gammo I feel the need to inform you that Crossman also has great break barrel air guns too.
>>
>>30172699
oh no heavier pellets work wonders on more powerful air rifles they go farther and maintain better accuracy, I was just trying to explain that light and fast pellets aren't the best unlike marketing will have you think.
>>
>>30172728
Alright.
I was thinking that if a fun was advertised as 1200fps with light ammo, using a heavy pellet would drop that down, obviously, but gain distance and accuracy.
That's why I was looking at the faster rifles.
Hoping that it would in turn equal more power.
>>
>>30172699
Yeah. I'd recommend a Trail NP XL but it's heavy as fuck, 10 lbs with scope. This one seems good: http://www.airgundepot.com/gamo-magnum-air-rifle.html, comes with a cheapo but still parallax adjusted scope, and still has iron sights so he can practice with that too.
>>
also when he gets older he might be interested in pre charged pneumatic rifles such as the Benjamin marauder which is in .22. These are closer ballistic ally to an actual rifle, think .22lr in power
>>
>>30172711
>>30172776
I think I've heard enough praise.
I was actually leaning toward the Gammo line.
It's nice to see some of you agree.
Thank you all for the input.
Looks like a birthday Gammo.
>>
>>30172796
Oh yeah, PCPs can be as powerful as .22lr and accurate as fuck. Check this out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZEzYAd3zSk

These guns are absolute small game destroyers, this guy hunts squirrels, doves, rabbits, etc with air guns and takes some incredible shots with air guns at over 100m. And they're also unregulated and legally suppressed, and you can shoot them inside urban limits.
>>
>>30172582
At that price range you can opt for a 22 pellet gun which means heavier more stable pellets which also hit harder. I would personally recommend the Benjamin trail np xl I think it is. I've heard plenty good for the accuracy and power and still comes in well below your price.

>dat accuracy
I need to get into air rifles some day.
>>
>>30173057
The rigs this guy runs are about $2000~1500 for the gun and $500 for the scope. But the accuracy is insane, like headshots on tiny ass doves at 130m.
>>
over 1,000 FPS is pointless, .177 tend to get inaccurate and wobble in the air. That being said ive killed quite alot of backyard pests with a .177 crossman break barrel. keeping it zeroed is a bitch due to the recoil impulse from the spring. Scopes arent meant to deal with it

PCP rifles are amazing look up some of Teds videos on youtube, search for EdgunUSA i believe but they are costy
Depending where you live, and where you plan to shoot honestly you might be better off buying a good .22 LR to teach further firearm basics on but of course thats out of the question is more residential areas
>>
>>30173141
>>30172582
Just so you don't mess up op. Do not use a standard rifle scope on an air rifle it will ruin your scope. There are scopes for air rifles designed to handle the double recoil that piston guns have.
>>
I want a pellet gun now to remove seagulls, pigeons, and all other flying rodents
What's the legality of this?
>>
Dude go to the wally mart and get the most badass looking break barrel rifle. He's ten man, not everything has to be about trajectory and fuckin wind resistance. Either way hes going to drop a squirrel or a robin or shoot at soda cans with his neighbor kid friend. Get him something that looks like a badass sniper rifle
>>
>>30173293
This.

Unless your son is black, in which case he's going to get shot on sight if he carries it around and points it at police like typical nigger kids do

What's the orange tip situation on pellet guns?
>>
>>30172582
Check out the stoeger x20s in .22. I was going to pick one up for my nephew, seeing as I've read good things online.

Anyone here have experience with them?
>>
>look up pellet rifles
>They all have boring ass Winchester fudd designs
Where's my pellet-SVD?
Where's my pellet-G3?
>>
>>30173444
I've got a little experience with stoeger pellet guns. I got the X50 in .177 before I knew maximum pellet speed was a marketing ploy. Stoeger guns are pretty solid overall, but really hold sensitive, even for a springer. The triggers are complete shit(REALLY long first stage with no definite transition between trigger stages) , and the trigger group is built in such a way that it's nearly impossible to dissemble and reassemble if you were trying to modify it. Using the fiber optic sights was relatively easy, but be sure to loctite the rear sight down. The main problem I had with my X50 was that it ate springs at a rate of about 1 per year for the 3 years I had it.

Overall, stoeger guns are pretty solid and durable, but have a really shit trigger and are pretty hold sensitive.
>>
>>30172582
Some of the most accurate air rifles I've had anything to do with where the Weihrauch's
You wont get 1200fps though!

Most are around the 600-800 or so fps depending on the pellet/calibre, what made me like them was the sights- I've honestly owned full sized rifles that had shittier sights on them than an old 1960's Weihrauch break-action
>>
>>30172636
>Gamo Whisper
2nding this recommendation. I have a Stalker Whisper and it's fucking awesome, and very quiet when shooting heavier pellets.
>their diabolo shape doesn't stabilize at transonic speeds.
Not true; any projectile that's stable at subsonic speeds will be stable at supersonic speeds. But the converse isn't necessarily true, and weird shit happens in the transonic range that you really should avoid if possible (so if you DO go supersonic, make sure it STAYS supersonic all the way to the target).
>>
Anyone have any experience with these surplus Romanian Pioner break action pellet rifles?

At $35 I'm tempted to try one out

It's a gun!
>>

Oh really? What pellets will you be shooting? 8.44 grain .177? 9.57 grain?

Fps is meaningless. The value you want is muzzle energy, either in joules or foot pounds.

In the price range i'd recommend a walther terrus. If you can jump to $500, get a walther lgv.

Really - european air rifles - walther, weihrauch, air arms, steyr - if you want heirloom quality, this is where it's at.
>>
>>30173183
Sound advice. Listen to this anon.

>>30173289

>>
>>30172582
There is this thing called a gun which happens to be called a Canik tp9V2 you can buy one for around 300 at most 350 usd. It comes with everything except the cleaning break free clp. Thank me later buy one now, 9mm going around 1170 - 1300 fps is light years better than a .177 or .22 going under 1200 fps real world.
>>
>>30173821
>>30175045
Yeah fuck fundamentals. Let's start all ten year olds start on 9mm handguns instead of small rifles. Let's get stuck on the fact that op said he wanted 1200 fps only because he wanted something with reasonable energy when used with heavier pellets. Lemme keep the shitposting going.
>>
>>30172582
Beeman or Gamo
>>
I have a shitty .177 1000fps thing (iirc it can't shoot straight. Either that or young me couldn't), I wanna try it out when I next go home.

But out of curiosity, is .22 a better airgun calibre than .177?
>>
Fuck gamo, get him a Cometa Fusion in .22. Good for anything up to hares in size. .177 might just wound an animal.

A 10 year old should have no issues with cocking a break action air rifle. Just get him to hold the stock between his knees and use both arms.

Youare now aware that Europe is not, in fact, a single country with uniform laws.
In my country you can CC, buy salt weppons and buy air-rifle capable of taking down a moose. Not so much in some other countries.
>>
>>30175207

Target shopters use .177, because of higher velocity and flatter trajectory.

.22 pellets are heavier, and conserve energy better, making them better for hunting.

Hollowpoint pellets solve the problem of energy transfer, but lose accuracy quickly.

Imo, and i keep saying this every chance I get, the best "hunting pellet" for low emergy (16 joule) rifles is h&n baracuda hunter extreme, or rabbit magnums if you have a high energy rifle.

Other than that, the whole competetive world shoots 4.52 mm, 8.44 grain JSB exacts.

>>
>>30172673
The difficulty in cocking them goes away quickly. I got a very stiff break barrel pellet gun when I was 10, and little me had trouble. I got it though, and the next time was a bit easier. It's a good side way to reinforce persistence and to teach him a little bit about torque and physics if he really struggles

1200 fps seem like a good idea but, these guns are loud, destroy scopes, and beat themselves apart.

If I had to go that route I would look at a Diana 48.

Avoid gamo or anything else sold at walmat.

>>
>>30172582
Stay away from Gammo! I've owned two, and both were trash. Shit triggers and sloppy barrels. They both used this plastic cap/front site thing that also served as the muzzle. On a quest to make the second one (first one's spring broke) more accurate (using a scope so didn't need the front site anyway) I removed the plastic bit only to discover that the bore was off center by about 3 mm! This left about a cm of travel through a non concentric larger hole. If you understand the importance of a crown you know why this was pathetic to me. I cut the end of the barrel in a lathe and fixed the crown as best I could. This dramatically increased accuracy. Couple of months later the damn trigger broke!

I now have a Benjamin Trial NP. Still has a shit trigger but overall a MUCH better rifle. No matter what you pick I can recommend a nitro piston. Much smoother, and doesn't jerk-twist when firing.

Practic helps but yes, the trigger is horrible. There aren't to many options from what I have found. I did find a ghetto way to shorten the trigger pull with a couple of washers but it defeats the anti-beartrap safety. I found that out the hard way!
I think machining a brass wheel or even figuring out a means of using a ball bearing unit instead of the pin it uses. Like a roller sear. Been a long time since I've tinkered with it. Im sure there is still info out there on how to improve it.

Last I checked on aftermarket triggers they cost almost as much as the damn gun!
