.303 yeah you know me!
Post enfields, or anything in .303 really. The sun may have set on the British empire but their cartridge is still going strong.

In other news, wolf started making steel cased .303 and sgammo is carrying it for ~50 cents per round!

Do the promag Lee Enfield mags work for a no4mk1? My dad brought home one a few months ago, but I am a poorfag and I haven't been able to shoot it yet because it doesn't have a mag, is dirty as all hell, and I can't find 303 ammo anywhere locally. (I refuse to pay 15 dollars for one box of ammo . . .)

Why? My god damn laptop shipped for free and the box for that was at least 5x bigger than a box of ammo.

Help me out /k/ bros, im in a bit of a moral dilemma

I bought a lithgow .303 a few years ago, it was my first real rifle after an air rifle. I spent a lot of time cleaning up the wood and thoroughly cleaning the metal parts because it was pretty grimey and the wood was very dark and dirty compared to pic related now. Anyway the rifling is pretty much totally gone in the last few inches of the barrel which makes every shot tumble and fly allover the place. Id be lucky to get a two foot group at 50 meters, the rifling looks good when you look down the barrel, but looking from an angle, you can see it is almost gone towards the end. The other issue i have is it's very hard to extract rounds, this is caused by the pressure from the extractor binding the bolt up when you try to open it. Probably because its a mismatched bolt and might fit a little bit loose or something

So the rifle is pretty much a wall hanger at best, i want to sell it but i feel kind of attached to it after cleaning it all up

I wish I bought 25ish CPR greek 303 from CTD when they had them. Didn't becuase they were the "B" grade

What's /k/'s opinion about putting a stiffer striker spring in a No4? Worth it or not, I've got one on hand and it makes the cock on close action noticeably harder to push into battery and the striker and cocking piece come forward with a lot more authority. But will it actually make any difference or is it jut making my bolt a little less smooth to work?

I suspect that worrying about the effect of lock time on milsurp bolt action accuracy is like worrying about whether or not to put high octane in your econobox because you want it to be faster.

>>
>>30175336
I've never heard of this dude. That video probably is the best reloading vid of a specific round I've seen, as it actually goes into the history and gives more detail and doesn't just waste time of showing the steps over and over to pad time.

Yeah, it's basically new.

You'd probably be better getting just getting a cheap single stage, a cheap case trimmer, some beam scales, a powder tricker and scoop, neck sizer and seating die and some calipers then using good brass ammo to reload.

Is there a good low pressure round for my ishapore? What brand or whatever? Anyone know how those plastic German bullets are or if they're even available still?
>>
>>30178955
Pretty much any major brand of .303 is low pressure compared to military spec, any rifle that's still serviceable will shoot it fine.

The hottest commercial stuff around is probably the Kynamco/Kynoch stuff loaded in HXP brass.

I've heard that 303 is a pain to reload if you shoot it from an Enfield (which is what almost everybody will do) because of oversized chambers. Also, can you use 7.7 Jap and 303 dies interchangeably?
>>
>>30185488
Which 7.7 Jap? The rimmed, semi-rimmed or rimless. Most dies labelled 7.7 Jap will be for the rimless. Since they copied the .303 Brit the dies should work as well for the rimmed.
The loose chambers mean you should only neck size to keep from working the brass. If you put an o-ring around the base to hold it tight to the bolt head the shoulder pushes forward and the case will now headspace off that. This prevents overworking the case and stretching of the web leading to longer case life.
>>
>>30185488
>a pain to reload for
I've never understood this, it's not like reloading .303 is some dark art or even just more complicated than reloading any other round. All you need to know is that if you full length size case life may be short, if you neck size case life will be fine.

Personally I once I fireform a case I only size about half of the neck.
>>
>>30185518
Which do you think?
Also, I thought that all three were about the same dimensions besides the rim.
>>
>>30185601
The rimmed was simply a direct copy of the british for use in there vickers guns. The rimless is more a bastard child of the 30-06 and 303 and is in no way interchangable with .303 british. The semi-rimmed was simply the rimless with a bit of rim to keep machine gun ammo from being used in infantry rifles.

So here's an Ishapore I bought a while back that I've been trying to remove this abysmal black enamel from. This shit is so awful, as you may be able to see in the picture, that it hides the screw on the back of the striker.

I've heard people say that these are supposed to be Parkerized, but I can't even find anything regarding what the original finishes are. It doesn't seem parkerized under the papint because it's so patchy. Anybody know what these things have on them? I'm thinking about giving it a full restoration.
>>
>>30185677
Huh, thought the rimless was basically a rimless 303. I wonder why they didn't want machine gun ammo being used in the rifles considering that they could have handled it fine. Silly Japs with their three non-interchangeable rifle rounds, not even counting 6.5.
>>
>>30185732
Original finish could be blued, parkerized, or painted.
Any rifle to be used in tropical areas, including Pakistan and India, was to be painted overtop the finish.
>>
>>30185732
In British service the black paint was Suncorite, which was extremely durable. Before WW2 mostly everything seems to be blued, although some early war No4s made in England did seem to be blued. Canadians mostly blued them and used parker later on. Savage used parkerization.

But that looks too sloppy to be done by an arsenal or any armourer, especially if it's painted over screws. Although I don't know what they got up to in India.
>>
>>30185796
Yeah I've heard about the suncorite. That stuff sounds and looks fantastic. I've actually heard an interesting note on it, that it actually phosphates the metal underneath the paint over time. That could explain the splotchy phosphating underneath the paint on mine, but this CERTAINLY isn't suncorite. I've heard that needed some absurd shit to strip it off, and this was coming off with regular stuff like acetone, mineral spirits. Hell what i mostly used was Motsenbocker's.

I'm toying with parkerizing it though that doesn't look so great IMO. I love how the blued ones look but again, I want to restore, not refinish. I only wanna do something if I know it's going to be proper. Not that I'm planning on selling this any time soon, but I'd like to do it right.
>>
>>30185864
>and this was coming off with regular stuff like acetone, mineral spirits
Sounds like your rifle got abused by some bubba and his shitty cheap BBQ paint or whatever the fuck. Like you I'd definitely try and strip it off.
>>
>>30185891
No, that's the thing. This is some kinda weird preservative shit the Indians put on them, but it makes things like the sight tangent and the rear striker screw totally inoperable. Plus it was flaking off when i handled the gun so it defo had to go. Right now it looks like some WWI relic which is tight, I'm looking to get a 1907 for it since I found one that's got a hook quillion.

Bought this one for $700 Ausbucks about a month ago.

I didn't know these existed, but it's been "Regulated by Fulton", which apparently is a gun shop somewhere in Britain that did really good accurisation jobs on Enfields.
>>
>>30193331
Unf, how does it shoot compared to other enfeilds?
>>
>>30193356
Still haven't shot it yet because I've been crazy busy, but I'm expecting good things from it.
They put new sights on it that flip between 300 and 600 yards, so I'm guessing that if I can see the target it should do pretty well on my 500m range.
>>
>>30193331
beautiful collection m8. aren't nuggets really hard to get in straya?
>>
>>30193416
They're more expensive than in America, but they can still get pretty cheap (in Ausfag terms).
That's a Type 53 that I got for $350.
>>
>>30193449
Type 53s in that condition in America actually go for around 400-600 (The 600ish ones I've seen have paperwork). Most people think T53s are all cheap becuase the only big batch were the beat to shit ones that started at 100 bucks. T53s before that were usually in much better condition and were rather uncommon.

Pick a side, damn it. 700 for a proper ally acaccurised rifle is pretty good. Excellent if it's an Enfield, how much are mags there? Almost 40ish per here, which is a shame because I would love to have a bandolier of mags that isn't more than the gun.
>>
>>30193522
>It was sighted in yards
>I'll be shooting in metres
Pretty clear distinction m8

And mags cost about $65-70 from what I've seen. I'm thinking of getting some basic gear for running around with it, but I'll probably just load it with clips.

What? My DP shoots fine, no blow ups even after a complete disassembly prior and the bore is like brand new.
>>
>>30195461
DP meant a lot of things and you lucked out from what I understand. Would still recommend running a gaugeand getting it checked out

That's still a dollar a round though; you're burning an Alexander Hamilton with just 1 mag.

Nice, im always on the lookout for a no4 to add to my collection. On a side note, anyone know why no4s nearly always have mismatched stocks? I dont think ive ever seen a no1 with a mismatched stock, but id say maybe 80% of the no4's i see for sale are a weird mix of dark and light wood

Nice collection fellow ausfag

Also, anyone know what type of sling i should get for my P14? I figure it's a web sling like the Enfields but not sure.
Can't seem to find a matching bayonet for a reasonable price either.
>>
>>30197520
Actually, disregard that about the sling. Most likely it's just down to personal preference

I was using that Wolf ammo on memorial day and I was getting keyholes. I don't think it was the fault of the ammo. I think my Enfield has some weird pitting on the inside of the barrel causing. Might get it re-crowned.

>>
>>30197791
A lot of people are reporting keyholes using the new ammo. It's not just your gun
>>
>>30197807
Oh really? Last time I shot it before memorial day I was with my uncle and I think we bought some soft points from the lgs don't remember the brand he got but it was high quality a dollar a round or so. Don't remember any key-holing then. I thought only 2 grooved barrels had issues with the wolf ammo?

Bubba and FTR. Enfield attract bubbas while shit attracts flies, and they always have.

Lots and lots of No4s went through a factory thorough refit and while many were equipped with a new stock set complete others were deemed to only need another part. Most of the time they would match them but there were those that still slipped through.

Also Enfields were made in a lot of different wood, and all of it was used. You have Birch from Savage, Walnut which was used by the British while they still had supplies of it, Black Walnut which is darker still and was used by early Savage and most prolifically by Longbranch, then you had Beech stocks which the British made millions of. All of these in different shades, colours and patterns of grain.

pic related, this furniture is all original but now I've put a long lenght walnut butt on it, still Long Branch made, but lighter in colour.

I've swapped the buttstock of both of mine to long variants, and while I've tried my best to match them up it's not perfect.
>>
>>30197226
The round Mk1 cocking piece? It's a left-over from the trials rifles, they eliminated it after about '41 or '42 to simplify manufacture. That's a 1941 Maltby but the only thing original to '41 is the receiver itself.

>>
>>30198197
Oh yeah they're like the example you posted. What does it mean that they're like that?
>>
>>30198248
It's just one of those nice little features they had early on before they were completely streamlined for mass production and cost effectiveness. As far as I know they were only made during 1941, the first year of No4 Mk1 production, and even then they were not on every rifle. I guess with all the refits and stuff throughout the war and after it many didn't survive, or at least were replaced with another protector. You rarely see them.
>>
>>30198277
Oh that's pretty cool, I just got back from my gunsmith. Bore got gauged at .315 so needless to say I am gonna have to get a new barrel.
>>
How much should I be paying for a SMLE in reasonable working condition in the USA?
>>
>>30198464
Also this being said, anybody know where to find a good new barrel and what they're worth?
>>
>>30198497
Criterion makes new ones, assuming you're in the US. Or you can still find new old stock surplus barrels if you know where to look and are patient, or so I hear people say.

I would go with the Criterion, you're guaranteed to get a good barrel.

I puked because of the mag
>>
>>30189230
How do the new mags work? have to fiddle with them?
>>
>>30199464
I've heard they're all shitty. There were some good 7.62 ones made but I have never heard anything good about aftermarket .303 mags.
