What kind of weapons that would be suited to protect oneself from a large and hostile mass of folks? Got any strategies to protect one's home and place of work from a riot mob?

If you live in a urban area you need either a large group of people and enough firearms to keep a solid number of them armed and on watch 24 hours a day, along with enough ammo to last potentially jumpy shooters a week or more, or you gtfo with what you can. You and 2 mates are not heroically holding out for more than a short period of time until you get overrun because you didn't watch every angle, burnt out or need to sleep and wake up to enjoying some deep cultural enrichment.
If you live in the country not only are pretty unlikely to have to deal with any such problem, but if you're near the outskirts of a large city and maybe had to deal with overflowing trouble then open ground is your friend. You still need enough people to keep multiple guns covering all directions at all times, but when any potential problem has to cover several hundred yards to get near enough to hurt you it should make your life far easier.
