hey fellas I'm kinda new to this whole gun hobby

I'm looking for a semi automatic rifle under $800 to have fun with at the range and possibly go hunting with. I already have a 30-06 bolt-action I inherited so I'm thinking about going with an intermediate cartridge, though I'd be open to something larger if I can find it for the right price.

I was thinking about a mini 14 but I've heard they have accuracy problems, can anyone confirm?
>>
>>30164151
mini 14 is functionally fine but expensive for what it is
>>
>>30164151
Do you live in the states? If so build a PSA freedom rifle kit or get an AK. Doesn't cost as much as a mini, same performance shooting the same rounds. I love mini's but they're too pricey for what they are.
What/where do you plan on hunting anyway?
>>
Ar15 or M1 Garand (from the CMP when they restock their inventory). If ar15, build from PSA parts
>>
>>30164151
I get it, you want a semi auto in an intermediate cartridge that's not a black rifle. Also it can't be a $1500 m1a. That leave you with basically ak pattern rifles
>>
>>30164151

There is no reason to buy a mini over an AR-15.
>>
>>30164151
mini 14 rifles pre-2005 had a thin barrel that would lose accuracy to overheating only after a couple shots.
post 2005 they hold accuracy just fine.

folks will tell you an AR-15 is a better value, and they are more accurate, but to get a sub-MOA AR costs a lot more money than a bare bones Mini

AR-15s do have the better aftermarket and you can have the fun of building and modifying them yourself.

however if you like the M1 Carbine/M14 look, feel, and operation, you'll be perfectly happy with a Mini
>>
>>30164151
If it doesn't have to be a new rifle,
you can get SKSes, Hakims, cheaper AKs, and cheap ARs for under $800.
You can sometimes get M1 carbines or M1 garands for under $800 if you're patient.
>>
>>30164229
unless you hate pistol grip stocks, plastic, aluminum, and direct impingement
>>
>>30164192

>PSA freedom rifle kit

wow that's reasonably priced, will that work with any AR-style receiver or do I have to get it from that brand? I live in CA so I'd have to get one with a bullet button :(
>>
>>30164239
Which is why you own an M1, not a mini crapfest.
>>
>>30164420
well yeah, you need an M1 too, but if you want a .223 you get a Mini.
some people just don't like ARs. nothing wrong with them we just don't like them.

>accuracy problems
An issue on older 180 series rifles, and can be fixed with an after market part at that.

New 580 series rifles are perfectly fine.

>>30164229
Sure there is, they're fun, and ultimately, they are working rifles.

>>30164239
Which really is all irrational.

>>30164420
I like .30 Carbine, but it's a small rifle cartridge, as opposed to .223, which is an intermediate cartridge, range and PSI is better by far, and ammunition can be a lot cheaper.

It really depends on what kind of rifle you're looking for.
>>
>>30164239
That's the dumbest thing I've read in weeks. Congratulations.

One of these perhaps?
>>
>>30164277
Spend a little more and get a premium kit......the freedom kits are supposed to be shit

Also, get a radlock bullet button. It lets you adjust it with a key so you can use it as a regular mag release for out of state shooting
>>
A cheeky answer is to use that $800 to start the process of moving out of Cali, and lay down roots here in the United States.

Being serious though, I would recommend building a nice AR. I don't know enough about bullet buttons to know how difficult it is to uncuck your rifle if the BB was factory installed. If you ever escape from the People's Republic of California you'll want to be able to take that shit off.

Functionally both the AR and the Mini will get the job done, it's just that the Mini costs significantly more than an good enough AR, and about the same as a pretty nice AR.
>>
>>30164151
>I was thinking about a mini 14 but I've heard they have accuracy problems, can anyone confirm?
Only for the older versions, Ruger fixed it since
>>
>>30167596

I'm actually applying for jobs outside CA right now. By the time I find one and get a new driver's license in that state I'm betting that Hillary [or Biden if she's indicted] will be leading Trump by double digits and the panic buying / price jacking will have already begun so I'd like to get something before that happens.
>>
>>30168788
Trump has been rising in the polls, friendo. He's tied with Hillary.
>>
>>30168788
An AR-15 or Mini-14 would be a good choice at any rate. Good luck in leaving CA.

>>30168798
God this election is so horrible, no matter who wins I feel like we'll lose.
>>
>>30164203
Will they ever get more stock?
I was ready to pull the trigger on one, did the research on all the paperwork I needed to send in just to find out all hit the 308 and snipers were out of stock
>>
>>30164151
Accuracy is relative with these things. Most intermediate SLR shooting is quick off the shoulder 50-100 yard shots with the occasional 200-300 shot. For that purpose the Mini-14 is adequate. Not good, just adequate.

Barrel harmonics, as indicated, are the leading problem. It's just not a good design from the standpoint of free floating the barrel or keeping it cool from shot to shot. The gas block literally vents gas inside the grip and up past the barrel through the upper handguard. Also, as others have said the newer models partially remedy this with thicker barrels but the design is just not as inherently accurate as an AR.

Do you need that enhanced accuracy? It can't hurt. With good ARs costing ~600$ these days (IE about the same or cheaper than a Mini-14) and using far cheaper magazines the mini kinda loses out. Now that said, although it's not as good it's still viable. It's accurate enough. Mags are available and affordable enough. Reliability is good. Maintenance is minimal and relatively easy. Rear sight assembly is... shitty but not too tough or expensive to swap out. Should you get it? If you REALLY like the way M14s, Garands and M1 Carbines work and you REALLY don't like the AR-15 that much then sure.

You might well find that the Mini is just more fun to shoot. Lots of people talk shit before they try one out. They aren't bad. But if you want the best rifle for your dollar, unfortunately these days with good ARs being so cheap (even Ruger's own AR-556) the Mini-14 just doesn't hold that title.
>>
>>30164151
It is as good as any $800 AR any anybody who says otherwise is a faggot.
>>
>>30164151
Just checked out a Century Arms CETME at the local sporting goods store. $700. .308 calibur. Should do the trick. Pic related.
>>
>>30170191
Not true. I was just at the store two weeks ago. In alabama they had various c amd d models. A bunch of the fantastic looking 308 specials, and a fair number (20-40) rack grade beaters that looked tired. When I went they also had 15 national match there, which is what I picked up.

SKS Master Race reporting

7.62x39 and more accurate and elegant than your average AK
>>
>>30171542
If you like the ergonomic layout and you have a warranty from the store it's a good buy. Not as bad as some of Century's older products but there are a few gremlins that might require a trip back to the factory after a quick range trial.

If it works (and from what I heard most do) it'd be a great rifle. Ergonomics are a bit annoying, but that's my take. I'm not the one buying the rifle, so if you like it then by all means go for it.
>>
>>30171542

it's on the banned list in CA

;-;

I swear they just flipped through a picture book of guns and banned the ones that looked scary.

>>
>>30172518
He says he just saw it in the shop, therefore should be legal to purchase.
CETME Sporters are banned by name, but the C308 has a different name, ergo so long as it has a bullet button or is featureless with Kydex wrap it's legal.
>>
>>30172649
>>30171542

oh shit apparently they sell them at Turner's

I'll put that on the list to consider
>>
>>30171801
That's what I said. They have the snipers and 308, site says they're out of the rest

The fact that decent (good enough for you or me or anyone that's not a competition shooter) ARs exist for a bit under $800 completely invalidates a Mini-14's existence.

Bushmaster makes good rifles. Smith & Wesson M&Ps are a little more (l think), but they're also great.

Ok, I missed the CA detail.

I am so sorry you live in Kalifornia SSR.
>>
>>30172918
I added in the fact they still have on the shelf rack grades. Not of the sniper model. Paper orders are on hold. In person you can buy whatever is there. While there I was told that in about six months they'll reopen orders again, but wouldn't say if the prices will stay the same or go up again. Two different workers let me know there were quite a few still boxed up amd just waiting to be sorted still.
>>
>>30173018

ballistics for .30 are pure shit though

They're perfect for the purposes of the weapon, you're a nigger.

>>30174240
With the effort you have to go through to do this, you might as well just move straight to the Mini-14 immediately, the 5.56mm being cheaper and easier to find, with a lot more range and power than the 5.7mm

If you're gonna get an M1 Carbine, I don't see the reason to not have it in .30 Carbine

>>30174645
You'd have to handload.

>>
>>30175611
cali-compliance that makes it so a mag release needs a tool to operate. Its like the 1mm reset buttons on calculators.
