so, recently I've been kinda drooling over the older S&W steel frame 9mm pistols from the 80's and what not. problem is, I can't really find any kind of break down of the different models and what all has what actions, etc.

Awhile back I came across a 669 and I just kind of fell in love with the looks. But, I didn't pick it up because I didn't know anything about it.

So, /k/, school me on the older S&W steel frame pistols, please.

5906 is the one you want. DA/SA, shittons of mags and holster out there for them. Rock solid performer. PD trade ins are a good deal.

There is also the 5946 which is a DA only gun.

Wikipedia has a nice rundown of the models.

I fucking love my 6906. It was my father's for 15 years before he gave it to me. Never had a jam. Great firearm. Don't let anyone give you shit about the slide mounted safety.

Why the fuck did S&W stop making these glorious DA/SA pistols. Seriously, they have the M&P series with strikers, some 1911 iterations, and a seriously limited line of revolvers.
What the fuck happened to S&W...
>>
>>30162465
The only real complaint you could level at their 59/69 series is how heavy they are.
>>
>>30160427
I had a 4006 years ago. sold it when times were tuff. wish I still had it.

>Why the fuck did S&W stop making these glorious DA/SA pistols.

Cost.

These guns would cost about 600-700 to make these days.

Polymer is the in thing now, and people didn't want to carry or shoot a big heavy metal gun that didn't have any military history like the 1911 did.

true, gun shop was literally trying to get rid of some and i managed to buy a Model 59 for 200 dollars

sweetest 9 ive ever had.
>>
>>30160427
All these mini-59's that Smith and Wesson made are really well made internally and very little ever goes wrong with them. Buy them now.

this is exactly what i was looking for. thanks!

12lb trigger abortion.

If you find these don't get the ones from Maine get the Springfield ones. QC apparently went to shit when mfg moved.

same. this is kind of a csb but ill tell it anyways because your story triggered my nostalgia boner.

back in the early 90s when my parents were detectives, my dad went out and bought two 3913s, one for him and one for my mom. she couldnt load the magazines and somehow couldnt qualify with it so he just put it back in the box and let it sit in the safe for 25 years. he carried his as a detective for about a decade.

about a year ago i was over at his house finger fucking some guns and he brought his out and told me the story about what happened with my moms and i offered to buy it. i paid $400 and it came with four mags. i dont know if that was a good deal or if my dad jewed me. anyways, i ordered hogue wood grips because i thought it would look cool and installed them before ever shooting it. the wood grips were thick as fuck and made shooting it difficult. that and i forgot to lube it up not remembering it sat in a box for 25 years with no lube so i kept getting fte and other problems. finally i removed the stupid wood grips and lubed it back up, shoots like a champ. its now my bedside gun and i plan on passing it on to my ween when the time comes.

>pic related, those awful wood grips

Don't know the values but you couldn't let a safe queen with history walk out the door, anon. Well played.
>>
>>30169791

yea i know. he ended up selling his own 3913 to fund some gay sig compact and i was heart broken he could sell a piece of his history like that. i mean, damn dude that thing was on your waist and ready to save your life at any given moment and you just up and sell it? i develop emotional attachments to guns and to me that would be like abandoning your dog.

after seeing this thread this morning, I realized I missed the 4006 I sold years ago. I called 6 diff fun stores in my area, nobody has a 4000 series or 59 series anything. armslist and gunbroker are also shit. my life is suffering.
>>
>>30160427

Does the 5906 have a decocker?

Or some means of setting it back to double action without unloading it?
>>
>>30172830
the safety decocks it. only way to carry it hammer back is safety off.
>>
>>30172919

Alright cool, so its like a Beretta 92 (amongst others) in that regard.

Thanks for the reply.
>>
>>30172955
unlike the 92, I'm pretty sure all of the 59/40 series and the others have a magazine safety. I remember reading somewhere it was S&W shitting themselves over pending (at the time) gun safety legislation, so they included it in the design, and supposedly they were the first major manufacturer to include trigger locks with their guns.
>>
>>30172989

Well, that's gay; but I live with it on my Ruger 22/45 and I can live with it on another gun.

I'm sure someone has figured out a way to disable it anyway.
