an ideal first revolver is a medium frame .357 Magnum with a 4" barrel and adjustable sights, made by S&W or Ruger.
.357 is powerful but manageable, great for self defense.
.357 Magnum revolvers can also chamber and shoot the cheaper and even more abundant .38 Special ammunition.
a 4" barrel is well balanced in the hand and gives much better ballistics and sight radius than a snubnose, and is still easy to carry IWB, OWB, or in a horizontal or vertical shoulder rig.
a medium sized frame will soak up the recoil well, without being heavy to carry.
adjustable sights have a good sight picture. fixed sights on revolvers are usually very minimalist.
S&W and Ruger are the best quality to price value, and they're easy to find new or used.

look for a S&W 19, 66, 586, or 686, or a Ruger Security Six or GP100

>>

S&W 686 is a solid base tier .357. If you don't care about the Clinton lock then you can get one new for around $650, or you could hunt gunbroker/armslist to try and find an older model with the lock for cheap.

If you want something you can load the hottest rounds through with no problem, then a Ruger GP100. Same price range, a bit bulkier, but can handle ridiculous loads.

I prefer the looks of blue steel to stainless
I like the trigger and grip ergos of S&W more than Ruger
Rugers are better suited to shooting hot handloads
S&W K frames balance better than the heavier L frames, but are prone to cracking the forcing cone when shooting a lot of hot ammo with light bullets

if I were to go back and do it again, my first pick would be a S&W 19.
a 586 and a blued Security Six are close runners up.

their best known revolver is a snubnose 5 shot 44 special
the company has changed hands many times
despite its spotty reputation a lot of folks that buy a used one say they got one of the good ones, so it doesn't matter if everyone else got crap.
it makes it very difficult for a prospective buyer to tell if he's looking at a half decent gun or not.

The DW or the Meatba. Probably can't speak for the MR73 until I get a new grip for it. The factory wood grips just aren't comfortable enough to shoot on a regular basis. I'm going to wait until I can get something like >>30164795

The DW just soaks up .357 recoil and I can peg clays at 100yd with relative ease. I just mag dump with the Mateba most of the time because it's so fun to do. Webm related, lel.

I love that kind of creativity. I've had dozens of gun ideas ranging from absurd to plausible that will probably never see the light of day.

anyway I know it's hard to get a response from the guys at Nill's. mactecsales.com sells a lot of their more popular designs in the US. they're who you want to order those from to avoid long wait times and expensive shipping costs. the guy at mactec told me it would be better to order the more obscure ones directly from Nill. after emailing them a few times with a question and no response. the mactec guy told me to contact Alex, since he's their main point of contact. Alex answered my question within a day, and a photo of the grip I asked about to boot.
that was a few years ago. I hope he still works there and his contact info hasn't changed. try asking at mactec if you don't have any luck.

I say for a wheelgun, >>30166929, Charter arms, bulldog .44 specials of theirs is nice and cheap, but .44 special ammo can be pretty costly and a bitch too find.

What I would recommend is find a used Ruger Security Six, I normally see those listed in places like armslist, gunsamerica and broker for 400-450 and in pretty good shape.

After that is a S&W model 10, can get one used from 250ish too 300 or so, also they have a snubnose model as well as the 4 and other inch barrel makes.

Also a great model 13 can be gotten for around 499-600ish, .357 magnum, 4 inch barrel(they have a cool 3 inch one but those go normally for 700 plus) also seen a few model 65's(stainless form of model 13) listed at around 450 on a few places in great shape(same store it was listed from also have some model 64's for 400-450.)

Also look for S&W models 12, 14, 15. 19's are great but normally go for 600 plus, probably the same with the stainless form of it the 66.

Mk VI's are amusing, but you either learn to handload for them, or burn fairly expensive ammo.

It was a LOT cheaper in Arizona, where in 2014 I could often find it for ~10.00/50, just because it was a slow seller.

last one of these that popped up on gunbroker went for over $3k
I can't fathom why no other company has bought the rights to make this, it would practically sell itself especially when people panic about ammo shortages and such.

honestly the two things that make that gun sexy are the unfluted cylinder and the slab sided barrel- two features that actually REDUCE the machining required and should therefore make the gun cheaper, and yet it's almost impossible to find any other reasonably priced revolver configured like this. damn shame.

Honestly though I don't understand why they're making the two models that are only slightly different
>>
>>30179133
It was developed by two people. They sold the rights to a third after the licensing deal with colt fell through. From what I understood one of the originals is dead and the other was trying to get both th rights back and a facility to build them again. Korth might actually have a licensing agreement since they offered something similar.

after copious amounts of research (gun porn viewing) im looking at a few options in .357 .

I want the wheelgun to match the rifle (either a winchester 92 or new production marlin post-remlin fuckup) so the gun has to be blued and wood grips. the options are:

A. Ruger GP100 4in . ~550, needs wood grip.
B. Smith model 27/ Smith 586 4in . ~7-800.
C. Manhurin MR73. ~750 . (I'll never get a discount shipment one, they sell too fast)

Which one should I go for? Is there an option I'm missing?
>>
>>30190301
all excellent choices
>Which one should I go for?
of those I'd pick the MR 73 for its slick adjustable trigger, build quality, and somewhat unicorn status. a lot of the trade-ins come with a parkerized finish and/or rubber grips though, and the wood grips that do come on them are thin at the thumb web and can be a bit uncomfortable to shoot after a while. there are some more ergonomic grip styles available from Karl Nill but they're very expensive.
second choice would be the S&W 27 since I just love the look of the half underlug and checkered topstrap.
>Is there an option I'm missing?
the Ruger Security Six was available with blued steel and wood grips. the Security Six is the same gun but with more minimalist fixed sights.
>>
>>30190301
also of those rifles I'd definitely get the Winchester 92. new production ones are made by Miroku in Japan. they have a few modern safety features like a tang safety and rebounding hammer, but those are unobtrusive. Miroku also made the 1892 for Browning a while back in .44 and .357, but those had none of those features and were a bit more historically accurate. you can sometimes find those on the used market.
the new production Winchester 1873 is also Miroku made, and also has no rebounding hammer or tang safety. the action is slicker than the 1892, but not as robust, so they're not chambered in .44 magnum.

Uberti also makes good 1873s and Chiappa does 1892s too

Manurhin is neat but really for the money it's hard to beat the 586/686. My gp100 is fine too, but the Smith is one that has a huge following, nice sights, and just about any gunsmith can work on them.

Try to avoid the Hillary hole if you can, but you can blank it. Easier on the stainless gun to do so.

9mm revolvers. yes or no? Is it really worth the hassle for better performance over a 38 special?

Apparently they will shoot without moon clips, but you have to manually eject the rounds with a pen or your fingernails. But if you have the first 5 on a moon clip and 5 more on a speed strip you have 10 on tap.

I'm also iffy about the plastic frame on the LCR. But the only other options would be charter arms or... Taurus.

>9mm revolvers. yes or no? Is it really worth the hassle for better performance over a 38 special?
I'm not usually a proponent of auto calibers in revolvers unless we're talking convertibles or multi-caliber guns...but in a snub gun I can certainly see the value of 9mm. More power/velocity than .38 without the recoil and muzzle blast of .357, and more widely available than either to boot.

>I'm also iffy about the plastic frame on the LCR. But the only other options would be charter arms or... Taurus.
"Iffy? If you're worried about durability, don't be. Aesthetics...personally I think the LCR is a pretty good looking gun, albeit a tad chunky(especially the 3" model).

>>
>>30197847
>There's he Taurus and charter arms.
They're junk. The only makers of good quality yet affordable double action revolvers at this point are Ruger and S&W. The Rugers are generally cheaper and offer more more long-term durability with high pressure ammo and absurdly high round counts, but to many the S&Ws are preferable for their triggers and aesthetics. Personally, aside from some of the K-frames and the 3" J-frames I'd never choose a S&W over a Ruger.

it's not a true colt clone.
it has a few visual differences like two piece grips instead of one, and two pins instead of three screws in the frame, but otherwise it gets the look pretty close.
the manual of arms is different too. the cylinder spins freely when the loading gate is opened. it has no half cock, and lacks the distinctive four click cocking of a Single Action Army. it also has a transfer bar safety, allowing the hammer to safely rest on a loaded chamber.
also while the Vaquero comes in a blued finish, they don't come with case hardened frames, so again they don't look as much like a Colt as the Italian copies.

Unless you're one of those fags who needs it to look/work like an actual antique, they're the best SA's for the money

why dont you just rename that file "Why MIM-shit is a problem"
>fuck shitty revolvers

If you're going to throw cowboy aesthetics out the window the adjustable sights of the Blackhawk offer a much better picture than the minimal century-and-a-half-old Colt style sights.

It doesn't really bother me that its not a true clone. I just want a quality look-alike that will function good. If I got a legitimate colt SAA or clone, I'd be scared of shooting the piss out of it.

Whats your opinion on the PX4?

I think you're in the wrong thread.

That being said, I like them, very good. I suggest the Compact model, has the most features if you aren't specifically gunning for a full size. Get the low profile safety wings and you're set.

By nearly all accounts they're quality guns, so go for it.
