What are good gas masks/filters private sector or surplus? Also from a affordability standpoint.
Don't buy a milsurp if you intend to actually use it . Get a 3M mask that seals around the face and is rated for all the exposures their filters cover. Then get organic/aerosol filters. And if for some insane reason you actually get mustard gassed, grab the person nearest you and drag them the fuck out with you. You don't want to hang out in one of those gas clouds.
Dont get milsurp, 3m and hepa rated filters are the way to go senpai

Who?
I wear 3m at work sometimes and I like them a lot. I also sometimes do drills with dummy filters on my personal mask.

What's wrong with the M40?

The Avon S10 is good
I have one that's in date, and I have new filters still sealed and ready to replace the one I already opened to put on the mask.
Also the expiry dates are for liability purposes most likely, and should still offer protection (I think, I'd rather not test out that hypothesis)

Enjoy your surplus asbestosis.

In terms of both cost and effectiveness, pic related is your best best. Most surplus gas masks are only good for playing STALKER.
Not that that isn't a good reason to buy one.

The asbestos maymay. There literally isn't wide use of asbestos since the early 60s. Even the Russians used carbon.
For OP I would say GP-5. That shit is cheap as fuck and if you can check if it is an asbestos one on Wikipedia for fucks sake. It is a great seal on it and is rather comfy without the straps. I like it.

So on the S10's I noticed they're sold at different sizes. Any idea for determining what size is best for you?

That does look good, but can you properly use a rifle with the GP-5? Also aesthetically speaking i'm not to big on it.

that would get hot af as soon as you start moving around
