The G36 didn't really fail. This was bullshit. The troops that count didn't really complain about it and the KSK gets whatever they want anyway and still mainly uses the G36 apparently.
There were also two versions of the rifle. One cheaply produced for security forces etc. and one slightly more expensive one for actual combat.

They never issued 416s(G38) the Bundeswehr only 417 designated G28s. KSK has some but most still opt for the G36.

Afaik it did exactly what it was meant to do. Also I believe they fired like multiple mags in full auto in a very short amount of time and then right away tried to shoot single fire on medium distances.

While I'm sure its a fine rifle, the German armed forces like any other in a government with money to spend should be expected to get with the times and tacticool themselves some. The lack of a tendering process with at least some semblance of transparency makes it a bit suspect. Willing to bet some grease was involved for HK to 'win' that 416 contract though
