To actually answer your question, yes, a pump shotgun is a very solid choice for a first firearm. Just do your research before you buy. Mossberg 500 or a Remington 870 are the obvious timeless choices, but some years build quality is worse than others. Familiarize yourself with the 3 basic shotgun food groups (birdshot, buckshot, slugs) and get some range time in. Then you're good to go.

My uncle did twice in his life. first when he was about 12, went to blow the snow out of his barrel after tripping in the snow while rabbit hunting and shot his eye out. It was indeed s train wreck. Truth be told no one really knows what happened, the podunk coroner ruled it a suicide though. Coulda been self inflicted, could have been an accident, could be his friend he was with killed him. The ruling theory is that he jammed the magazine in too hard with the chamber hot and it went off while pointed towards his head. If that's true, why did he call every one in the church directory that very same night?
