They're officers.
They're called leftenants because they're almost never right.
>>
>>30147946
I never understood how "lieu" became "left".
>>
>>30147966
It's possibly a French word. 'Lieu' is sometimes spelt 'luef' in old French.

The English pronunciation of 'lef' has been around sine Middle English was spoken over here. So basically only for the last millennia or so, give or take a few years.
>>
>>30147946
>>30148009
Basically? No one actually knows for sure. Not even kidding - Google it. There's no one single answer. But, here's a few more besides >>30148070

There are sources that say the "leu" part came from Latin, and evolved into the French "Leuf" which was picked up (MAYBE!) by British/Norman forces and linguistically imported that way.

Then of course, there was a very long time where the Brits and the French started killing each other in numerous wars, so, MAYBE, the British were saying "Lootenant" from the French "Leu" and changed it intentionally to "Lef-ten-ant" to intentionally Anglicized the word and separate it from French.

All this, while the RN preferred "Louhtenant" (Lowe-Ten-Ant) for some reason.

I did not know this
>>
Lieu sounds too much like "loo" a bathroom in the British vernacular, so they call em by a slight variation in the sound.
>>
Best I've heard is that the leftenant is left in tennancy of the men when the captain's not around.

It's another way of saying lieutenant, which 5 seconds on Google would've taught you.

Serious question: WTF made you think this is weapon related?

Same. And lieutenant is just in tenancy in lieu of a higher officer.

when the captain dies or is incapacitated, the next officer is "Left" with the "tenancy" of command.

I'm just kidding, it's French to English tomfoolery. I like Lindy fine but some of the shit he says is completely out of left field

He has zero appreciation of the historical method, NEVER checks the shitty sources he pulls out of the internets' asshole, gets incredibly butthurt when people factually correct him (let alone when they disagree with his opinions), and seems to be fairly dim.

yes, he is interesting to watch. but not if you actually know what hes talking about, because its all shit

lindybeige is the definition of a bessewisser.
I've watched a good deal of his videos, but the way he presents stuff is so fucking poor.
no discussion, no reflection. and he constantly pisses on other peoples opinions

Lieutenants? A wird breed of the officer species. They are a common breed and one of the most numerous of the officer species, being found in large numbers in armed forces across the world. They are commonly found in thier fortresses of solitude made out of mountains of paperwork, trying to hide from a pissed of Warrent officer. They like to belive that they are the alpha of the pack but are often reminded by a sargent that that one bar (or pip) means nothing, and are just glorified paper bitches.

Basically the guy you throw all you leave aps at.
